GUILTY UK - Charlotte Brown (24) Manslaughter, London, 8 Dec 2015

For some reason I think opposite and do not believe for one min that he feels guilty at all, even now. Lots of narcissistic traits are shown in many of his actions.

Even though I personally think that it was tragic accident and not planned as in other horiffic murders we see on this boards, his actions prior and after accident however sealed the deal for his conviction.

His excessive speeding (while drunk), shady boat, and most importantly not calling help for her while he himself was being rescued which resulted in her death. And on top of it all him running away.

Yes, his sentence should be definitely harsher now then original one. While I do not know legal procedures, due to high publicity and even MPs being aware of this case for a while, judges, family and public will make sure of it.
I agree Al Ka, I don't think he felt guilty I think he knew he was guilty, of negligent manslaughter.

They were talking about this on Jeremy Vine today and a defence barrister said that the maximum JS can get for doing a runner on bail is 12 months on top of his other sentence.

It doesn't seem much of a deterrent to me.

Hopefully he'll stand trial for the 2018 GBH charges now.

On Wednesday night the Crown Prosecution Service was preparing an extradition request to be lodged with Georgian legal authorities. However Shepherd's lawyer has said it could be 'months' before he returns to the UK, despite experts suggesting the UK authorities would want to 'urgently extradite him'.

It is said that Shepherd could appear in court on either Thursday or Friday, but it is not clear how long the extradition process could take from there.

The length of the process will depend on both the Georgian authorities and on whether or not Shepherd consents to his return, if he does it could be a matter of weeks.

If he refuses to return to the UK, extradition could take a 'considerable amount of time'.

Oh and he didn't hand himself in, he was tracked down:

"One thing was immediately apparent from Jack Shepherd's demeanour at Tbilisi police station: His breathtaking arrogance.

He didn't walk from the black limousine which dropped him outside. He swaggered; even managing a wave as if he was some kind of celebrity.

When a TV microphone was thrust in front of him for an impromptu interview, he embraced the moment and his lip curled, ever so slightly, into a smirk.

'I hope the truth will be discovered,' he said defiantly. 'My appeal will end successfully and everyone can move on.'

No remorse, then. No apology to Charlotte Brown's parents for prolonging their agony. Nothing.

He was spotted by a local journalist who recognised him – following press reports in the former Soviet republic that he might be in hiding in the country – and tipped off the police.

So Shepherd, 31, does not even deserve a shred of credit for finally doing the right thing; he didn't.

#JackShepherd Defence: UK court never considered Shepherd’s psychological condition. He was also a victim of the boat accident in which Charlotte Brown died. He has alcohol dependency.

From a bit earlier:
_______________

#JackShepherd Shepherd in court now. Told judge he arrived in Georgia in March last year

Prosecutor outlining UK extradition request. He is wanted for jail sentence handed down at Old Bailey last summer and for allegation of GBH on a Devon Batman.

Pros asks judge to extradite him and keep him in jail until then. She said there is a danger he will flee again if he is released from Tbilisi detention.

Pros says there was evidence Shepherd was planning to travel to Thailand or Indonesia and should be kept in jail.

Shepherd leaning down as translator recounts words of Prosecutor. Pros says even if authorities took his passport he would try to leave Georgia. He has no close ties in Georgia.

Pros: He must stay in prison for three months before extradition, she asks Judge.

#JackShepherd Defence: reading out Georgian law that can block extradition on humanity grounds

Third defence lawyer tells judge the fact Shepherd handed himself in shoes he won’t flee Georgia. He wants to conduct his appeal from here.

Defence: Shepherd wasn’t driving the boat

(How many defence lawyers does he have?)

#JackShepherd Shepherd tells judge: ‘The decision to go out on the boat is my greatest regret. Not a single day passes when I don’t think about the loss of Charlotte’s life.”

#JackShepherd Shepherd: ‘Sometime after the accident I get suicidally depressed about what had happened. That’s why I’ve been unable to speak about it. I regret not taking part in the court proceedings. I wish I’d sat down with Charlotte’s family and explained what happened.’

Shepherd: ‘I know it’s caused them even more suffering and that’s why I handed myself in to draw to a close this horrible accident and the terrible consequences.’

Defence: The fact he was suicidal doesn’t mean Shepherd is a danger to anyone else.

Many thanks for the updates Legally..and indeed, how many lawyers does he have.

Love the complaint that the Pros only said negative things about him... how mean of them... if he had wanted to show his better character then might have made sense to attend his trial

Sounds like he is claiming he handed himself in but I thought I read that he was arrested because someone spotted him and advised police

Yeah, there is so much wrong about the defence's case today. Like how can they do a psychological evaluation when he's absent?

He is a conniving cunning scheming manipulator! All in my opinion. Arghh I can't stand these lying cowards.

Thanks for the updates Legally.

The family regard his claim that Charlotte was at the wheel of the boat at the time of the crash as particularly inflammatory. ‘Let us be clear on this,’ says Katie. ‘There is no proof that Charli was driving at the point of impact.

‘This was accepted in court based on Jack Shepherd’s first statement where he said he thinks she was driving but he cannot remember if he had taken the wheel back before the impact.

‘There are no witnesses to see who was driving, we only have his word, and he has been proven to be a compulsive liar.

‘In fact, if Charli was driving, the court found that this was more negligent — as Shepherd was the master of the vessel — to allow a novice to drive his defective speedboat.’

[...]

Shepherd has further provoked the Brown family by claiming this week that he had apologised to Mr Brown on the phone after Charlotte’s death.

‘I said: “I’m so sorry, Graham,” but he didn’t want to hear it and hung up. I’ve only spoken to him once, but he took the opportunity to tell me I would have a very bad time in prison.’

Mr Brown says this is a ‘complete lie’. ‘I have never spoken to Jack Shepherd,’ he adds.

‘He has never called me, never said sorry, and it’s absolutely disgraceful that he is suggesting this now.’

Katie adds: ‘There was never any phone call. None of us has ever spoken to this man.’
