UK UK - Christopher Halliwell, suspected serial killer

LOL. This has happened before.

I really should have given more thought to my user name. It was supposed to be a self-deprecating pun, not a comment on my physical resemblance to Reese Witherspoon (there is none).

I'm a Leeds lad.

But no harm done, just thought it'd be weird if I let someone think I was female on an internet forum.

Disclaimer: I've never lived or worked within body-carrying distance of Allerton Park.

Oh haha I always assumed you were female, in part because of the username and also because something like 90% of members here are women!

Another Leodiensian here, hiya!!

Police are searching the garden of double-murderer Christopher Halliwell for more bodies.

Halliwell was last year convicted of fatally stabbing and strangling Becky Godden, 20, in 2003. He was handed a rare life sentence - meaning he will never be released - at Bristol Crown Court. The 53-year-old taxi driver had already been serving a life sentence for killing a second woman, Sian O'Callaghan, after abducting her as she left a nightclub in 2011.

During the last trial the detective leading the investigation, DS Steve Fulcher, told a jury that Halliwell led him to believe he had killed more people.

Also from that link above, Becky's mother Karen Edwards believes Halliwell killed several more girls:

‘He is definitely a serial killer,’ says Karen, 55, with absolute conviction. ‘I believe he has been up and down the country murdering young women. He used to be a groundworker up north – I know somebody who worked with him on the same building site. He would go and have a pint with the lads and then disappear. Serial killers are usually triggered by dates. That [19th March] was the day that Halliwell broke up with one of his partners.

Claudia Lawrence - 18th/19th March 2009
Halliwell was familiar with York – his father lived in Huddersfield – and the description of Claudia’s murderer is identical to him – a left-handed smoker, 5ft 8-10in, with slightly receding hair and a skinny build. ‘Claudia was reported missing from her home on March 19, 2009 – exactly two years to the day before Sian. It is also the same date that Linda Razzell disappeared.’

Linda Razzell - 19th March 2002
Karen is convinced that Halliwell is also responsible for the murder of Linda Razzell, who disappeared on March 19, 2002, after dropping her children off at school and driving into Swindon town centre. Her husband Glyn was convicted of her murder but always protested his innocence.

Sally Ann John - 8th Sept 1995
Karen believes Halliwell may have killed 23-year-old prostitute Sally Ann John, who was classified as a missing person in 1995.
‘She was a Swindon girl and knew him well,’ she says. ‘She used to live in the same street as Halliwell, baby-sit his kids and take his taxis.’
No thread

Melanie Hall - 9h June 1996
She also thinks that he was involved in the murder of Melanie Hall, who disappeared from a Bath nightclub the following year. ‘She was taken by an unmarked taxi,’ adds Karen. ‘He has to be in the frame.’

So including Becky and Sian, it would mean the dates were

1995
1996
2002
2003
2009
2011

Someone remind me, was he in prison on any of the in between dates?

Police think his offending period spans across 30 years.

Divorced dad-of-three Halliwell, 48, was just 20 when he had the chilling conversation with a fellow inmate while serving a prison sentence for burglary. He was in prison after being jailed for four years in 1984 for a series of antique raids on upmarket country homes when he asked another lag: “How many do you need to be a serial killer?”

His cellmate – a villain from London’s East End – replied: ”At least three.”

Halliwell also asked the same prisoner: “Have you ever thought of strangling your girlfriend during sex?”

So he could have killed one or two in his late teens. Hmmm. Wonder if they're gonna dig up previous addresses, the one they're digging now (96 Broad Street) was sold in 1999 then again in December 2010, he was arrested for Sian's murder 3 months later.

Could they contain the concrete/soil being excavated from the garage floor -being taken away for testing?

Yes, they are clearly brand new bins so they will have been brought to the site by police for this purpose.

Oh yeah, doh!

Do we think they're gonna find anything? I hope Halliwell hasn't just told them this for a laugh.

'Criminology expert says Christopher Halliwell case is similar to that of evil serial killer Peter Tobin.
“Tobin was a handyman who would move from place to place under the guise of his occupation but he would often bury victims before moving which created what we called in criminology linkage blindness meaning it makes it difficult for police to connect victims to perpetrators.

“Killers use this to make it difficult to trace things backwards and build a picture of how many victims they may have had.

“It is an effective way to distance yourself from the victims and I see these parallels with Halliwell.

More evidence bags taken from former home of double murderer Christopher Halliwell.

Police have found possible evidence at the former home of double murderer Christopher Halliwell. Specialist forensic teams have been searching the gardens and garages of two neighbouring properties on Broad Street in Swindon all day. It's part of a major search operation underway at the property following "new intelligence". Police forensics have loaded several brown "evidence bags" into their van, and more police bins have been taken away.
Dozens of sealed wheelie bins were also removed yesterday. Forensic teams are expected to carry out tests on the contents of the bins over the next few days.

Do you think halliwell himself might have confessed to more?

Either that or an ex partner - or a neighbour perhaps has cast their mind back and put two and two together about unusual activities. But it does seem very specific doesn't it?

Has it occurred to anyone that it could have been Halliwell, rather than Vincent Tabak, who killed Joanna Yeates?

Swindon is not that far from Bristol.

People have speculated that Tabak might have been involved in the disappearance of Claudia Lawrence; they are also speculating that Halliwell might have been involved.

VT is not a very likely murderer, despite his guilty plea. Halliwell would fit the frame much better. I wonder if anyone in LE has thought of this.

No. There's no doubt VT did it.

I totally agree. I cannot think why anyone would admit murder and accept a very long sentence in jail unless they were actually involved.

The only time this can happen (or has happened) is if there is somebody of subnormal intelligence who is bamboozled by the interrogation. Whilst he seemed slightly odd, he was in fact very clever.

I was reading back about Fulcher and his comments on finding further victims of Halliwell, and came across this article from October 2016. Apologies if it's already been posted.

Interesting about this 'sketch book' of Halliwell's - do hope it has been fully investigated.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/double-killer-christopher-halliwell-sick-9009249

Double killer Christopher Halliwell had a sick *“murder sketchbook” which could *pinpoint burial sites of other victims, the Sunday People can reveal.

Steve Fulcher, the detective who caught Halliwell, has told how a stash of puzzling pencil drawings was seized at his home.

Taxi driver Halliwell was told last month at Bristol crown court that he must spend the rest of his life in prison for the murders of Becky Godden in 2003 and Sian O’Callaghan in 2011.

But Mr Fulcher believes the sketches of rural scenes show places where Halliwell buried several other women.

He said a forensic psychologist helping with the investigation believed the killer probably drew them as macabre trophies of his crimes.
