“In the coming months we’ll be launching a proactive operation in the city centre," he told councillors.''

"We’ll be deploying officers, overtly and covertly, to try and identify predatory offenders who are exhibiting behaviours of concern, and then being able to intervene at an early point to deal with them accordingly", Supt Runacres added.

Last year, the number of rapes of women aged 16 and over rose by 23 per cent, from 423 in the previous recorded year to 522.

The total number of sexual offences has also increased, rising from 1,536 to 1,644 last year.''

I hope there is an investigation into why there has been a 23 percent increase.
This number will probably be much higher as I would think a number of tapes and sexual assaults will go unreported.

A chart showing the number of sexual offences in Bristol (Image: Bristol City Council)
''Labour Councillor Emily Clarke said: “This week in my ward [Bedminster], I had a really quite shocking example. At one of the secondary schools there was graffiti in the tunnels on the way to that school talking about freeing somebody who’s been accused of rape and celebrating that person. At the moment it feels like we’re going in the wrong direction.”

''Responding to this, the council is carrying out work in over half the schools in Bristol around domestic abuse, sexual violence and healthy relationships. The Bristol Ideal Award is given to schools which change their culture, improve the curriculum and invest in training in that area.''
