A search and rescue operation is now ongoing to search for missing cockle picker Darren Rees who was last seen cockling at low tide on tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately the coastguard have said that despite an extensive search, no trace of Darren has been found. Darren was last seen wearing green waders and a blue jumper. Mr Rees boat and vehicle was recovered tuesday at Machynys in a car park.
It looks like that air and sea searches will not happen today, only coastguard foot patrols, so it looks like the search parties think he could of made it back to land.
Anyone know anything about cockle picking in the area, how dangerous it is? I am aware of cockle picking in morecambe bay and the dangers with so many Chinese people losing there lives a few years ago. I think at the moment cockling is banned there because of the dangers of quick sand and fast tides. It does seam Darren was an experienced cockler so not to on found any trace of him in the search is of great concern.
