''Thirty years ago, tragedy struck as an 82-year-old woman was discovered covered in blood, cowering against her stove following a raid on her Martlesham bungalow.

She died 11 days later and her murder remains a mystery to this day, with Suffolk police continuing to search for new clues in the investigation.

On February 11, 1993, a concerned neighbour broke in through a window and found Doris Shelley, 82, in a dazed and confused state.
Covered in her own blood from an attack with a blunt object, Mrs Shelley lost consciousness upon being discovered and died in a hospital bed on February 22.''
Police determined that, sometime between 2pm on Wednesday, February 10 and 12:45pm on Thursday, February 11, an unknown person or persons had broken into the property possibly through a bedroom window.
Just 18 months earlier, Mrs Shelley was the victim of a violent robbery at her home in which £12,637 was stolen.''

''As part of the 25th anniversary case review, police looked again at 397 exhibits taken during the original investigation.

Cross posting from the Edna Mary Ann Harvey thread:

Perhaps the recently arrested Ryland Headley? He's believed to have been prolific and lived in Ipswich.

He is now charged with murdering and sexually assaulting an elderly woman in Bristol in 1967, apparently investigators are using a wide net to look for possible new victims.

From the BBC:

Ten years later, Headley would admit the rapes of two other women, aged 84 and 79, in Ipswich and ask for 10 other burglaries to be taken into account when he was sentenced.
The victims of his burglaries were always the same - elderly or middle aged women living alone.

''That May, the murder featured on BBC’s Crimewatch, prompting 50 calls and two photofits of men seen loitering around the home in the days leading up to the attack.

One was aged 25-30, stocky, 6ft, with collar length wavy brown hair growing into dreadlocks. He was seen on February 8, 9 and 10.

The second was about 40, 5ft 10in, slim, with dark brown hair and a fair complexion, carrying a Halfords bag and seen near the A12 roundabout underpass.

Police also looked for the driver of a red Ford Sierra-type car seen on Mrs Shelley’s driveway on the last day she was seen alive.

At one stage, her death was linked to a similar attack on the Eyke postmistress on September 10, 1992.

The Post Office had already been targeted by robbers four months earlier, on May 19.''
