Prosecution begin opening the case​

The jury are being brought into court.

Justice Goose says one juror has “provided a very good reason overnight” why they cannot sit on this trial, and they have been excused.

One of the reserve jurors will therefore be brought, with a further reserve remaining while the opening is heard.

Nigel Power, KC, prosecuting, rises and introduces himself and the other parties in court. He says he will now open the case for the prosecution.

Juror discharged​

The jury of five men and seven women are brought in, as is the reserve juror brought in to hear the prosecution’s opening.

Justice Goose tells them: “Our criminal trials involve 12 individuals who are sworn to try the case on the evidence.
“At the beginning, we had 14.
“That is to make sure we have jurors able to try the case once we have heard the evidence.
“We needed number 13, but we have juror number 14 waiting anxiously.”
He asks “if there is anything that has arisen so far” that means anyone cannot sit on the jury.

One man indicates he may have an issue and is asked to write a note to the judge.

Justice Goose reads the note and tells him: “I’m making the decision now to discharge you from sitting on this jury any longer.”

The reserve juror will take his place.

Elle Edwards was caught up in the crossfire of a gangland feud in Merseyside, a trial has heard.

A woman has described how a gunman looked her "dead in the eyes" before opening fire outside a pub on Christmas Eve, killing a 26-year-old beautician.
In footage filmed on police body-worn cameras, the jury heard Ms Stanton tell an officer: "It was a targeted attack because he looked round the corner to see who was there and he turned round.
"He turned round and he looked at me dead in the eyes.
"I wanted to say to the people that were there, 'Watch out', but I couldn't because he would have just shot me.
"It all happened so quick. He just went 'bang, bang, bang'."
She added: "I thought he was just going to batter them. I didn't think he had a gun."
The witness sobbed as she spoke to the officer.

Skorpion gun shown to jury​

Mr De Villiers Horne is asked to show the jury a Skorpion submachine gun, which he takes out of a cardboard box and places onto the witness box.

He says: “Just for the assurance of the jury I had the opportunity to check this firearm. It is safe, there is no ammunition in it. It is entirely safe.”

NP: “I had rather taken that as read but it is always good to know.”

The Elle Edwards murder trial will not be sitting today.........

Mr Justice Goose told the court : "I understand one of the jurors is unwell, ringing in this morning having suffered sickness. We can’t continue without all of them together.

"These things can happen in a trial. It’s unfortunate but it does happen from time to time.

The judge then addressed Ms Edwards' family in the the public gallery, adding: "I’m sorry ladies and gentlemen, it can be frustrating but it’s part of life. We will adjourn to come back tomorrow at 10am."

We're back in court and the defence case for Connor Chapman will now begin.
Connor Chapman has been escorted into the witness box.
He is wearing a white shirt and a light grey tie, with his long brown hair tied up in a bun and flanked by two prison officers.
A third officer sits in the body of the court.
The jury are brought back in and he will begin to give evidence.

Trial adjourned​

The trial has been adjourned until Monday due to unforeseen circumstances disrupting proceedings today.

The trial was always scheduled to not sit on Friday, and Justice Goose has asked the jury to return on Monday morning at 10.30am.

I am surprised that TW is not going to testify. Although, for me, I don't think the Prosecution have proven guilt for either CC or TW, so perhaps TW feels safer by saying nothing.
