Mr Spencer's son, Ian Lee, told the inquest his father was repeatedly questioned by police in relation to other crimes despite being formally acquitted of Elsie's murder.

Mr Frost, who was aged five when Elsie died, told the inquest his sister's death had "split the family wide open" and left his parents feeling guilty.

He agreed with coroner Kevin McLoughlin that Elsie's murder had a "truly devastating impact" on the family and no-one being convicted added to the distress.

"We have so many questions going on around, going through our heads. And it's still happening today. Still many questions out there we feel have not been answered."

In court, Elsie was described in statements as a "model child" who was expected to become head girl at school.

Speaking at the inquest today Colin Frost, who was just five when his sister was murdered, said: "Both my parents died with a huge amount of guilt over what they saw as actions - or inactions - they took on that day.

"Dad because Elsie had asked if he would pick her up from the quarry.

"Because he had been at work the night before and because it was a place Elsie had made her own way home from before, he refused.

"We were a small family and we were destroyed.

"We became very disjointed for a period of time.

"Dad had issues and I recall for many years after, if there was ever any mention of Elsie in the local newspaper, it would affect him.

I don't know, I need to sit down and read up on it properly as I only know about Elsie. There is another girl, Anne Dunwell, who may also have been killed by Pickering, as well as the one or two attacked by him.

I think perhaps he needs his own thread. What do you reckon?
