GUILTY Uk - Emile Cilliers Accused Of Tampering W/ Wife's Parachute, Wiltshire, 5 April 2015

 • #321
Do you mean they've said f&f but they (most likely) really read it in the papers and they can't say that?

I think it could be both F&F and reading papers - but they can only word it as F&F to cover themselves.

The jury in the trial of Emile Cilliers has been discharged after failing to reach verdicts. He had been accused of attempting to murder his Scottish wife by tampering with her parachute.

Never thought I would be pleased about that, but with this "lot" it was absolutely the right thing to do.

Well, yes, given what it has turned into. But in general, not much to rejoice at. What happens next? EDIT You've just answered me...

Judge obviously had a good think after his earlier comments.

Best result definately.

I bet Judge was not too thrilled to have to spend his lunch hour drafting and issuing a rebuttal statement against the alleged bullying and could see the writing on the wall at that point.

I noted earlier in this thread that one of this Judge's previous trials was Chris Huhne ( Vicky Pryce ) and the speeding points. In that case, the first Jury had to be dismissed. I remember them asking a series of rather odd questions including;

1. Can we use information that we know about the defendant but which has not been mentioned in the trial

2. What is reasonable doubt

When the case was retried, they reached a very swift verdict. Let's hope this case is the same.

Am guessing that the 2 discharged Jurors were part of the minority group - who then probably came under pressure once the Judge brought in that majority ruling on Tuesday afternoon.

The jury, depleted from 12 to 10 jurors by “stress-related illness”, sent a note to the judge stating they would be unable to reach verdicts.

Mr Justice Sweeney thanked the jury for their hard work after they had deliberated for about 30 hours.

Cilliers, wearing a grey suit, put his head down and looked at the floor as the decision to discharge the jury was announced.

Mr Justice Sweeney released Cilliers on conditional bail until the retrial on the three counts which he denies is held on an unconfirmed date.

As I said I think they must have been pretty evenly split and didn't want to budge on their views. And they therefore knew they couldn't reach a verdict early on in the day today. Best result really but I didn't know there were three charges. How long before the retrial generally?

Eta I just looked at the beginning of the thread and the third ( criminal damage ) charge is due to the damage to the gas pipe, recklessly endangering the lives of his two children. :frown:

Thinking about it the outcome was probably inevitable at the point when the jurors had to be discharged because of stress, apparently as a result of bullying. If one side of the argument is, in effect, bullied off the jury then surely, by definition, any verdict is going to be unsafe?

Just seen a note in D Mail saying likely to be around Easter time. Which will make it 3 years , more or less, since the charges were brought
