Very good article with some court detail, plus pics of Judge and Prosecution.

One quote

Phyllida Wilson, a lecturer in psychopathy who was watching the case from the public gallery said Cilliers displayed "all the signs" of a psychopath.

Apparently the setting which showed us who was on the thread is no longer available ( just read this on the Welcome to Websleuths thread )

Isnt it great news. I saw that the Jury departed yesterday at 3pm ! and couldnt work out what was going on.
Then today couldnt find any updates for the Court on the Law Pages or Court Serve aaahhh ......
Really, really pleased that this Jury got it right and in such a short time as well. I do hope Judge gives him a long sentence and is not swayed by VCs input, which he has said he will listen to !

But the judge also said that as he had presided over this case twice he has his own views, which I hope will provide a counterbalance!
Like you I was very frustrated this morning when there were no court updates. This whole case has been very frustrating to try to follow...

Man thanks to whichever wonderful Mod changed the thread title so quickly. Lovely to see that Guilty header.

The defendant showed no emotion as he was convicted unanimously on the two counts of attempted murder and by a majority of 10 to two on the criminal damage charge.

He said he would be seeking a report from the probation service to establish the "dangerousness" of the defendant and to seek a statement from Mrs Cilliers on the impact the offences had upon her before sentencing Cilliers on a date to be set.

Thanks for the Jury figures Tortoise - so 2 people didn't think he damaged the gas tap, but they did think he was guilty of trying to murder VC via the gas tap ?
June 15 seems a long time to wait for a sentencing - I can't see any report as to whether he is on remand ( should be ) or out on bail still ?

I'm not sure if the DM has all its facts right - it might have, but earlier it was saying he was found guilty of attempted manslaughter, before they fixed that to murder.

My best guess is that the gas leak is an endangerment charge related to the children, rather than criminal damage to the fitting. I'll see if I can find a better report.

From Tortoise post and link as above

He will be sentenced on June 15, Mr Justice Sweeney revealed.

He said: 'Dangerousness is such a big part of this case, it seems to me I ought to get a view on this.

'Therefore I will adjourn sentencing for three weeks and formally order a report concentrated on the issue of dangerousness'.

He said he would be seeking a report from the probation service to establish the 'dangerousness' of the defendant and to seek a statement from Mrs Cilliers on the impact the offences had upon her

so is the Judge saying that he needs to assess how dangerous EC would be to the general public ? and then he will base his sentence on that assessment ?
If so, that doesnt sound great to me. What if the probation service view him as low risk, because his crimes were very personal and specific against one person only and not something he would be likely to commit against anyone else ?

I would think all murderers who target any specific person would be equally dangerous. It is quite an odd remark - he should treat him as he would if the attempts had succeeded in my view. And I would have hoped EC would have been remanded into custody. There's no chance this will be non-custodial. Surely?

It's hard to see why 2 jurors disagreed.

Yes, I think you're right, Tortoise. I was baffled by the majority verdict on the criminal damage charge at first and have looked for a better report without success - I hope you find one. I do wish one of the local papers had had a court reporter there.

Grief ! I hope not - didn't think of that, I just thought he might give him some silly low sentence, like a few years.
Am still searching to see if he's on remand or on bail - odd that there doesnt seem to be any note of that in the news reports.

Great news. I've since googled max term for attemped murder and it is same as for murder - I.e.life imprisonment. most end up serving 16 years so I would imagine it would be a long sentence. One good thing for him to look forward to - plenty of sex in jail.

I had assumed that was his photo from when he was originally charged. Great news!
