UK UK: Family make fresh appeal over Shona Stevens' 1994 murder in Irvine, Scotland

I suspect it is a bootleg "Fatty Fudge" which would suggest it is of UK origin.

That one looks good! Maybe also be a combo of characters, ie, Fatty Fudge with Winnie the pooh's bare bottom etc.
Could there be any significance to the relationship between the cartoon characters and the perp's interpretation of his relationship to the victim, ie.Minnie the Minx and Fatty Fudge?
Speculation, imo. rbbm.

The thing is, we don't know what Shona was up to in the last few weeks of her life. We know nothing about her injuries barring it was a "brutal attack", we don't know whether her face was the target or the back of her head i.e. was the attack intent on incapacitating her, or obliterating her, we don't know. We have no facts other than a cursory re-enactment and a keyring fob.

Nah, I think it was just a dumb "adult novelty" similar to various "pooping" or "egg laying" toys we see more commonly where you squeeze them and it forces a second soft object partially out the hole in the outer toy. In this case, presumably a phallus. The article I read said that the toy originally would have had "fabric trousers". Probably with a fly for the phallus to poke out of and also that could be pulled down to "moon" the buttocks. Just a dumb little toy made in China specifically to be sold in British convenience stores that probably has had too much importance placed on it because of its sexual nature and proximity to a violent crime against a woman. I wish I could say I thought there was more to it.

Yes, but not a keyring. This hung from the rear-view mirror of an immature male under the age of 35, driving an old banger [It's not exactly classy is it?...]

And IMHO it's not the Beano, this was 1995, not 1965. I reckon it's that proud British institution VIZ. So definitely an immature male!

Thoughts:- The keyring is interesting as Tunbridge Wells bedsit murders involved keys and a keyring being taken from a victim probably as a souvenir trophy.
Shona's murder was only 7 years after the Tunbridge Wells bedsit murders
Could the perpetrator have some kind of obsession with keyrings.

What if the perpetrator was known to both these women from the same town and later came to Brighton.

She moved to Brighton in 2002 and went missing in 2017. I doubt there is a connection to Shona's murder in 1994.

I think the keyring appeal was a last-ditch attempt by police that have nothing much to go on.

I have looked up the town of Irvine and it is the largest settlement in North Ayrshire so not a small place like I was initially thinking. It is unlikely then that the two women were known to each other or anyone in their family or immediate circles.
I was thinking that maybe Gillian went back to her home town and met whatever fate happened to Shona.
Another thought is that the perpetrator for Shona's murder may have since moved down South.

Anything is possible. Yep Irvine is a big place. I live near to the place where the murder happened.

At the time of the murder was it thought that a local person may have been involved.
Do you have a google maps image you are able to share of the exact sort of area Shona would have walked regularly to locate any places of interest such as golf courses, hotels, venues etc. If the perpetrator was a visitor then they would have needed a purpose for the visit unless family in the area.

Barely 6 months prior to the murder of Shona Stevens, there was another brutal killing of a woman in Irvine which also remains unsolved, but strangely has attracted far less media attention.

Like Shona 46 year old widow Agnes Montgomery (known locally as Nan Love) was beaten to death, although Nan's murder took place in her own home.

Police have never found her killer, however suspected that it was likely a local, and someone with whom Nan was acquainted.

Police have never linked the 2 cases publicly, however the proximity in both time and location, as well as the similarity in methodology are interesting

The daughter of a woman murdered in Ayrshire 30 years ago has appealed for help to find her killer, as a £20,000 reward has been offered for information.

Shona Stevens, 31, was attacked near her home in Irvine in November 1994 as she returned from a local shop.

She suffered severe head injuries and died three days later. Her daughter Candice, now aged 37, said the family "still want justice".

Police Scotland said it was determined to solve the case using leads not available at the time.
