UK UK - Finn Creaney, 32, dropped off Loch Naver, Sutherland to start hillwalking route, 25 Mar 2022

I assume he had the backpack with him and it was washed up on the shore, not that he left it on the shore and continued without it.

Possibly with a float attached or inside the backpack as many wild swimmers use.
That would make sense and why his dad is convinced he attempted a swim. So he had the rucksack which was attached to him as he swam. It eventually washed ashore and was later discovered by the deer stalkers.

That's a good point, I hadn't realised they even existed - Swim Secure Wild Swim Dry Bag Backpack Tow Float (30 Litres) - Triocean Surf | Surfboards, Xcel Wetsuits, Surfboard Blanks

Also his father said "Finn is a really strong swimmer and a good wild swimmer but for some reasons that we don't know about we fear that he may not have made the swim." which adds weight to the theory.

And a "misadventure" can be more readily accepted to many, especially pained family, than another obvious reason one might go in the Loch and not come back. I wish them all
peace

Sadly, I don't think he will ever be found. It appears he drowned while swimming across the loch. They would need to do an extensive search of the bottom to recover him.

He's wearing a long brown leather jacket slightly aged and its a replica of Aragorns ranger outfit from LOTR. He also has a green wool poncho and green Berghaus rugsack with him, he's also wearing brown walking boots going above the ankle *UPDATE* He is also wearing 1 Stark wolf Cuff on his arm.
Finn was woefully ill-equipped for any hike in the far NW of Scotland, especially at a time of year when wintery conditions could occur almost without warning. I would seriously question the judgement of anyone who ran an outdoor and bushcraft centre but took to the hills in that kit unless it was deliberate suicide.

If you look on the page, you will see that a search of Loch was done. Some of his belongings were found. It is believed that he tried to swim in the Loch, and drowned. His remains were not found.

Yes, I completely agree with you. A knife, a water bottle, and a cloth (not waterproof) poncho. No food, no cooking equipment at all, even the most basic sort, no layers or anything to sleep in. And his mum early on said it would be a 3 day hike. I spend a lot of time hill walking and camping, and wild swimming too, and there is practicing your survival skills and there is being intentionally ill prepared for the conditions. MOO

It would be interesting to know more about the boots he was wearing. in the UK at least, inadequate or unsuitable footwear tends to be the starting point in a chain of events that kills people.

I am constantly amazed by the number of people I bump into while hiking or climbing mountains who are wearing unsuitable footwear.
