Police have launched a murder investigation after an 86-year-old woman was killed and her husband was left with life-threatening injuries.

The woman, named locally as Freda Walker, died at her home in Langwith Junction in Derbyshire.

The 88-year-old man, thought to be local politician Ken Walker, was taken to hospital for treatment.

Paramedics called police to the house in Station Road at 09:30 GMT on Saturday.

On the police’s message to residents, Chief Superintendent Barnett said: “Whilst I can’t talk about the mechanics or how people came to be in the address, what I do urge people to do is keep good security to their homes.
“Keep their doors and windows locked, don’t let any strangers in, don’t keep any valuables on display and have a means of making contact with emergency services.

“A team of detectives are working round the clock and I would urge anyone, particularly any drivers with dashcam or homeowners with CCTV that covers the area, to come forwards as a matter of urgency.”

Vicious attack on elderly couple in own home frightens neighbours

She explained how a lot of the gardens on Stoney Lane and nearby also back onto a public walkway.
“It’s quite open up there, that’s the only concern we have, you never know who is up there looking down.”
The incident occurred in a house in Stoney Lane, Trowell, at around 12.26am on Thursday, January 6.
The suspect is said to have demanded money from the couple before fleeing the property.
The woman is reported to have sustained cuts to the right side of her head, severe swelling to her arm, and a possible broken jaw.
Her husband is said to have injuries to his face, arms and body but both victim's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-altering.

When you look At the similarities - locations, victims, violence, time of offence. Seems highly likely the same perps. To pick out the houses - the perp/perps must have local knowledge. Seems strange to be so violent - especially to a defenceless older woman

both incidents are close to the M1 if the same person - surely it may be likely he’s travelled using that route. Don’t know what the stats are but if you go to burgle then that’s what you do. I do know burglars golden hour is 4am - so to go in at 12-1 am and attack victims - seems almost that is his intention. I see earlier incidents as in years ago possibly connected - has he been inside for a period and been released recently?

I have a feeling burglary is just a cover for the need to attack. Also, if you were out 12/1am looking for a house to rob what are the chances the occupants on a randomly chosen house would be elderly? Also being elderly they are not as physically strong enough to put up a fight so the attack seems overkill IMO. I do believe there is a serial killer targeting elderly couples. It's too much of a coincidence that all the victims are elderly and the attacks are very violent and brutal. This is done by someone who has anger issues regarding the ages of the victims and the fact the victims are all in couples too. It would be interesting to know exact what was stolen? Serial killers often take 'mementos' to remember a crime they have committed.

Yes it's so risky, spending time killing and not just leaving a door open and running off if caught. With two victims the chances of one of them phoning for help are higher. Unless the person (or plural) knew there was something of high value in the house. It seems as if the attacks themselves could have been pre-planned.

Yes this is what I think too. I think the attacks on all the elderly victims from the serial killer thread (linked below) and now this the case discussed in this thread were all pre planned. I think the perpetrator purposely looked for elderly couples (like how the zodiac killer always targeted couples). I think they probably stalked them for a while beforehand, finding out their daily routines, if they were visited by relatives and if so what times. Burglary is not the motive here in IMO but more an after thought.

But jumping ahead it will be interesting to hear of the specific injuries inflicted on this couple and any similarities to the 'murder suicide' victims on the other thread (Thank you for linking) - There must be a reason why Police are looking at cases going back years.
Although I'm still keeping an open mind on what they mean by the 'other cases' at the moment.
