The family of a much-loved grandad are urging people to look out for him after searching for him for more than four days. Gary Alder, a dad-of-five from Swinton, was last seen on Tuesday (December 5) and his relatives have not heard from him since.

The 70-year-old, who still works as a painter and decorator, was reportedly seen near Aldi, in Eccles, at around 1pm that day. Prior to that, he was reportedly seen at Swinton Precinct at 11am.

His son, Ryan Donlon, told the Manchester Evening News that Gary's disappearance is 'out-of-character' and he would usually be in touch with his family. Ryan said: "He might stay out the odd night, but he would stay at his daughter's, or he would come to mine. He will always message me or his daughter, one or the other. But no one has spoken to him."

Years ago I used to know this area very well.

Where is Gary's car? There should be lots of CCTV available, especially around the town centre.
Lots of possibilities to easily get away for a while if that's what has happened. There's a motorway junction close by the town centre, quick access from there to Manchester city centre, Liverpool, Warrington or the M6. About five miles from Eccles it takes the driver to another junction, M61 going north or M60/M62 east to Leeds, Hull.

Having been local and involved with a missing person case way, way back, my concerns are around the canals. To note, the Manchester Ship Canal goes the length of the town at its southern border and the Bridgewater Canal crosses the Ship Canal midway through the town, to the west at Barton.

Mr Donlon added that he has spoken to all of his father's friends but they are also unsure of his whereabouts.

'He doesn't really have any hobbies, so I don't know where to look really,' Mr Donlon said.

'He just keeps himself to himself really. He's really quiet, he works, he looks after my sister. He gets stuff every day for her.

'He's self-employed and he just lives by his own means. He's been really struggling because he's not had much work.

'I spoke to his workmate and he said they've got quite a big job on, but he hadn't come, and it's not like him - the fact that he's not gone whatsoever.'

Mr Donlon says his father usually wears his work clothes - including a yellow high-vis jacket, a white buttoned shirt, light blue jeans and black trainers, adding that his clothes could be marked in paint due to his work.

Mr Alder drives a silver Nissan Almera, with the registration PL02 MXM, and people are being urged to look out for both him and the vehicle.

Greater Manchester Police is aware of his disappearance.
