Detective Chief Inspector Eamonn Corrigan who is leading the investigation said: “This week, we are conducting searches in the Benburb area in the hope of finding Charlotte’s remains. A digger will prepare the ground to enable draining of a flooded quarry. This step is being taken so that the floor of the quarry can be effectively searched.

“This has been an area of significant interest throughout my investigation and today’s searches are following a detailed review of all of the information available to me from my investigation and the subsequent trial.

“We have previously conducted searches in this area with specialist divers however I want to drain the water so that an extensive search can be carried out of the quarry floor. I am as determined as ever to bring Charlotte’s remains home to her family and I need to satisfy myself that every avenue has been explored.

UPDATE: UTV can reveal police began searching the bottom of a quarry in Benburb for the remains of Charlotte Murray. The 34yo vanished without a trace in 2012. Last month her ex fiancé was convicted of her murder. More on #UTV at 5pm.

Searches have begun of a quarry in Benburb in Co Tyrone, carried out by police looking for the body of murder victim Charlotte Murray.

The 34-year-old vanished without a trace from the Moy seven years ago this weekend.

Today the @PoliceServiceNI Search & Rescue team chipped along the side of the drained quarry near Benburb looking for the remains of Charlotte Murray. Some of Charlotte’s family were also at the site. They are desperate for her to be found. This is a vast area to cover. #UTV

The dig to try to find the remains of tragic Omagh woman Charlotte Murray started yesterday.

A specially trained PSNI search team worked meticulously in the depths of a drained nine-metre deep quarry in the Benburb area of Co Tyrone.

A digger started preparing the ground on October 28 shortly after 2pm to carry out the necessary work before the flooded quarry could be drained.

And yesterday work started in earnest to examine the ground.
