‘Grisly details are emerging from a British police investigation following the gruesome discovery of a dead and discarded newborn baby, covered in bites from foxes and dogs.

The infant, who was found naked by a dog in woodland near a housing estate in Manchester, has been named "Baby Pearl" by Greater Manchester Police.

Police believe the abandoned baby, which still had part of its crudely cut umbilical cord attached, may have been the product of rape or incest.

Tiny Baby Pearl was probably rolled down a rock face into bushes below by her mother, who may have needed to hide the birth from others, according to detectives.

At a press briefing, Detective Chief Inspector Lewis Hughes said: "I can only hope [Baby Pearl] wasn't alive at the point she was left here. The alternative doesn't really bear thinking about.

"We believe the mother may be somebody in distress," he said.

"Whoever left Pearl here was someone with no emotional attachment for that baby. There was not a scrap of clothing on her."

Police were alerted on April 4, after a woman was walking her dog which sniffed out the lifeless child.’

‘Baby Pearl was located less than 500 metres from a housing estate in Heywood near Rochdale, Greater Manchester.’

Twenty police have been assigned to the investigation, searching for the mother of the child who detectives believe could also be in danger.

"If it was the mother [who dumped Pearl], she could be a rape victim, or a victim of abuse or incest. It may be a mother who has concealed the birth from others," Det Hughes said.

Manchester police have run Baby Pearl's DNA through a national data base where it matched with potentially thousands of people, according to The Sunday Times.’

‘Tests have established the baby is probably of white ethnicity, though there are indications of mixed race heritage in the baby's lineage.

Police believe the person who rolled Baby Pearl over the rock face likely lives in the estate that borders Roch Valley Woods, which is also known as Bluebell Forest.

"We think somebody in this community knows what happened to her," Det Hughes said.

"We are talking about a little girl thrown away like a piece of rubbish. She deserved more. Help us, please."

Manchester Police are desperate to make a breakthrough as the case moves closer to a one-month anniversary.’

‘A newborn baby who was found dead in woodland, had a birth defect, detectives have revealed.

The abandoned little girl, named Pearl by police, was devastatingly discovered naked at a Heywood beauty spot known as 'Bluebell forest'.

Officers have now revealed the child was missing two ribs.

It is not currently known this contributed either to her death or her being left.

Detective Chief Inspector Lewis Hughes, said: 'A post-mortem examination by a forensic pathologist and paediatric pathologist has revealed that baby Pearl had a congenital defect, which is that she had two ribs missing.

'There any number reasons as to why that could have been. We don't know if it contributed to her passing away before or after birth.

'And equally we don't know if the mother or parents would have necessarily known if she had that defect.'’

‘DCI Hughes said: 'Pearl was around the age of a fully developed baby in terms of the pregnancy process, capable of being born alive.

'It may be that she was born alive and lived for a short time, minutes, hours, days, we don't know. Equally it could be that Pearl wasn't born alive. She could have been stillborn.'

Police have been unable to establish what colour hair or eyes Pearl had.

DCI Hughes, 33, said he was acutely aware of the emotional impact the investigation was having on his team of 20 officers.

'The team is full of mums and dads and it has affected them and me. It is a tragic case. The mum has probably been through a terrible ordeal. We are keen to know what has happened to mum and baby.’

No-one will be charged over the death of Baby Pearl

A murder investigation was launched and specialist officers spent several days trawling the wooded area, close to the River Roch, for evidence and clues that would help them understand how Pearl, which means precious, had died.

Three months later, a man and woman - believed to be Pearl’s parents - were arrested on suspicion of murder, concealing a birth and preventing a lawful burial.

The 48-year-old man and 33-year-old woman have now been released with no further action taken and the investigation has been closed.

Looks like they dont think its murder?

If they think the child was stillborn due to the heart defect, then that could be considered a traumatizing enough event to forgive the improper burial.
