UK - Huge fire rips through Grenfell Tower, Latimer Road, White City, London, June 2017

This article provides a good description of one man's escape from the building, coming down from the 15th floor. It paints a picture of what most residents faced when attempting to leave- a wall of smoke they could not get past.

Says he is being housed in "Earl's Court in London" paid for by the council for now.

The council say they've found temproary accommodation for 110 families (some from adjoining blocks which had to be evacuated so they won't need permanent rehousing, but there may be others staying with friends and family or where all members of the household are in hospital): http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...lats-kensington-chelsea-council-a7793401.html and the Government is guaranteeeing all survivors will be permanently rehoused within the local area within three weeks.

The council website https://www.rbkc.gov.uk/newsroom/all-council-statements/fire-grenfell-tower states that

Also:

That's good to hear. I hope all survivors will be comfortable very soon.

Silver lining that this tragedy did not happen in winter.

So I see the S*n has been up to it's old tricks again, journalist posing as a family member to get access to the injured in hospital. Scum

Jeremy Corbyn is making these ludicrous statements because it helps him politically to be for the people and not the rich.

The irony is that Corbyn is a millionaire, grew up in a 7-bedroom country house and went to a private school.

He's the ultimate "class traitor".

That's a very helpful diagram.

It's somewhat heartening to know that some people definitely escaped from as high as the 19th floor (because I remember that Jesica Urbano's family did get out).

This article gives more details about the resident who's fridge went up in flames. Apparently this really did happen and it seems now very possible that it was the start of the fire, although the fact that it grew into an inferno most likely had to do with that cladding. He went to warn neighbours and called the fire brigade at about 12.50am.

But is it also possible that the fridge fire was the result of fire from elswhere reaching it, making it a symptom rather than the absolute start?

  • #314
Yes, I wondered that too Ellmau

Ok on the photo detail with what floors folks died on...what's up with the floors not listed? 11,12,13,22,24? Those floors look charred? Yikes if its just that nobody known to have lived there has been identified...

I think people definitely escaped from 11-13. 22 and 24 could well have no survivors :(

"Theresa May has made a U-turn on a guarantee to rehouse victims of the Grenfell Tower fire in the borough, but has promised to foot the bill for their travel expenses.

The Prime Minister has remained vague on the subject of where the families affected will be accommodated, even though housing minister Alok Sharma guaranteed they would stay in Kensington and Chelsea on Thursday.

As part of the Grenfell Tower Residents' Discretionary Fund, families who lived in the block could be rehoused in a neighbouring borough if suitable accomodation is not found."

That is what happened with Katrina: those affected had to relocate for about 2 years before deciding if they wanted to move back to the area. Officials can't just snap their fingers and make housing appear

This a photo from after the fire right?

That smaller platform on the roof does not look touched by the fire. Was there no way for people to get up there?

I wondered about this I don't think the residents were able to get to the top of the building.

That would mean the fire started earlier than, say, 12.45am. Also, the neighbor who looked in the fridge owner's kitchen said the fire was "small".

I wondered about this I don't think the residents were able to get to the top of the building.

Yea it doesn't look like it. Maybe access to the roof was locked?
