UK UK - Janet Murgatroyd, 20, Preston, Lancs, 15 June 1996

Parkinson looks more and more suspicious. Can anyone confirm that he is still alive? I have heard that he passed away. Raymond Hayes has also passed away.

At first did not necessarily think it was the ex. because Janet's jeans were missing. That seemed to suggest imo, a random violent pervert keeping a trophy from his victim.
This news link, below. suggests that the ex may be inclined to steal clothing, speculation.
Wondering if a composite SnapShot could be developed from any DNA collected from the crime scene?
What if someone other than the b.f. had been watching Janet and stealing clothing from the laundry line prior to her murder?

Mrs Mary Murgatroyd told police in a statement read to Liverpool Crown court she believed the man, John Parkinson, told Janet in the phone: "You are dead." She said the former boyfriend was angry because of a drink-driving case and was blaming Janet's family for the trouble he was in. Mrs Murgatroyd also told police that months before her death, Janet had said that "the pit bull has been in." She believed he had broken into their Penwortham home and had stolen items. Janet's mother said she also thought the same man had stolen items of Janet's clothing including underwear from a washing line outside their home.

That's a great pick-up. I'm confused as to whether the police have something they are looking to build on, or that they are trying to simply be "symbolic".

Did you listen to the UK True Crime podcast on this case?

The story behind Lancashire's most notorious unsolved murders
By
Emilia Bona, 10 FEB 2019
"Victim: Janet Murgatroyd
Age: 20

What happened: Janet Murgatroyd's body was found floating in the River Ribble on June 16, 1996. The 20-year-old University of Central Lancashire student had been out with a friend the night before and was attacked as she walked home alone.

The night she disappeared, Janet had been out drinking in the pubs around Preston, and left The Adelphi with a man before leaving him close to Boltons Court.
She was last seen by a taxi driver being chased by a man across Penwortham Bridge away from town. A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as drowning and head injuries."
"Status: Following extensive enquiries detectives arrested a 22-year-old man. He was charged by police before being prosecuted and convicted for her murder in October 2002. However, his conviction was later quashed at the Court of Appeal.

Janet's murder remains unsolved. In 2018, 21 years on from her murder, Lancashire Police issued a fresh appeal in hopes of finding her killer."

Preston is my hometown & I went to school (Janet's previous school) walking up Strand Road & across Penwortham Bridge daily & still think about her often. Her face has never been forgotten but it's so sad that we never found out who did it.

Preston student Janet Murgatroyd's murder "remains a crime we desperately want to solve" police say ahead of the 25th anniversary of her death

''It is 25 years since her tragic death on Wednesday, but the investigation into the killing remains open, and her killer is still at large.

The 20-year-old UCLan student, from Broad Oak Green, Penwortham, had spent her last day – Friday, June 15, 1996 – shopping with friends and enjoying a night out, finishing at The Adelphi pub.

But the bubbly part-time police clerk never made it home.''

''Janet's size 10 Wrangler jeans have never been recovered. A photographer at the scene found Janet's bloodstained shirt and police forensically tested hairs found on the top, and one of her socks.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.''

As Janet crossed Penwortham Bridge she was kicked at least three times to the head, suffering a broken nose and jaw, and suffered scratch marks on the back of her leg consistent with being dragged through undergrowth.

She was dumped by the river on the Penwortham side of the bridge, where the tidal water rose, and she drowned.

Someone on another forum said that her ex boyfriend is still alive. I think I read that Andrew Greenwood is not alive tho.

Idk what to think of this case. It’s one of those that I find difficult to discern because there are too many “players”

The death of Janet is a frequent reminder of how life can be taken so easily. I walked home that same night. And saw a man in the early hours. I liked a drink but always stopped before I got drunk because I hate being drunk. I reported the sighting to police. Not sure why they didn't come back to me but they must av thought my report wasn't relevant.

Welcome to Ws @spuggy, glad you are here to share what might have been a close call!
