We're continuing to appeal for help to find missing local man, 20-year-old Jayran, who was last seen on Tuesday, 21 March.

Officers are now seeking information about an item of clothing belonging to Jayran that was found on a gate near the Watermeadow area off Northampton Road, Towcester, on Saturday afternoon (see image below).

Sergeant Greg Taylor, from the South Northamptonshire Neighbourhood Policing team, said:

"At about 5pm on Saturday, 1 April, we received a call from a member of the public who had come across a black North Face jacket hanging on a gate on Northampton Road, near to the bridge over the River Tove.

“From property found in the jacket pockets, we've been able to confirm that the coat belongs to Jayran. What we now want to establish is how it came to be in the location where it was found.

“The jacket was hanging on gate in an area where there is quite a lot of footfall, with walkers and dog walkers accessing the water meadow and the river. So if it had been there a while, it’s likely other people also saw it.

“Or did someone find it in another location initially, but then carry it to the gate to leave it where it could be more easily seen by anyone who may have lost it?

“The area is well used by local people and we’re hoping someone may have seen the jacket sometime between Tuesday, 21 March, when Jayran was last seen, and 5pm on Saturday, 1 April, when the jacket was found.

“If you believe you may have seen the jacket or were the person who placed it on the gate, or if you have any other information that may help us find Jayran, please call us as soon as possible."

Jayran was last seen in the Towcester area at about 6pm on Tuesday, 21 March.

He is 5ft 7in, with a slim build, with brown eyes and short braided hair as pictured in his photo.

Anyone with information is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101, quoting reference number MPS1/910/23.

Police searching for a missing Towcester man will today, Friday April 7, begin working with a specialist search team to carry out further searches in and around the River Tove, as part of their continued investigation to find him.

The missing man, 20-year-old Jayran, was last seen by his family at about 6pm on Tuesday 21 March. Extensive inquiries have been made to establish his whereabouts but so far officers have been unable to locate him.

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector, Pete Basham, said there were a number of factors that led to the decision to carry out a search of the river.

He said: “Jayran’s family first contacted police on Sunday, March 26. Following advice to make further checks with friends, they called again the following day to report their increased concerns. This was considered out of character for Jayran not to be in touch with his family on a regular basis, and a missing person investigation was launched.

“On the afternoon of Saturday, April 1, a member of the public reported finding a jacket on a gate on Northampton Road, Towcester, next to the Watermeadows. From property found in the pockets, it was identified as Jayran’s.

“On Saturday evening, we began searches in the area around the Watermeadows to try to find any evidence that may help us find him.

“We have and are continuing to carry out extensive inquiries to locate Jayran, to establish if he has been in contact with anyone, carried out any financial transactions in the time since he was last seen, or if any member of the public has seen him.

“Sadly, these inquiries have not provided us with any evidence of Jayran’s whereabouts. Therefore, we now have to consider the possibility that if Jayran has been in the area around where his jacket was found, he may have gone into the river.

“As such, we will now carry out a search of the river, and will continue to support the family as the investigation continues.

“It’s vital we continue to explore all lines of inquiry, and to that end, the local community has been extremely helpful and I would like to thank them for their continued support. If anyone has information about Jayran’s whereabouts, please get in touch with police.

“Finally, we believe Jayran’s jacket was found elsewhere before it was placed on the gate by the Watermeadows. If you saw the jacket in another location or were the person who hung it on the gate, please call us.”

Neighbourhood officers will continue to patrol the area while the searches take place. Anyone with information is urged to speak to local officers or call the incident room on 101, quoting incident number 20230504/219.

Jayran was last seen by his family at about 6pm on Tuesday, March 21.

Mounting concerns around his whereabouts led to Northamptonshire Police organising a three-day underwater search of a section of the River Tove in Towcester over the Easter weekend.

That operation concluded late yesterday afternoon and police are continuing to explore new leads in the investigation which has firmly established that the last known contact made with Jayran was just after 10pm on Wednesday, March 22.

“Jayran, we want you to know there’s an Easter egg with your name on it waiting at home - we’d love you to come back and have it.”

Meanwhile, neighbourhood police officers spent the Easter weekend engaging with members of the public in Towcester, distributing leaflets and posters and trying to gather more information about the missing man. Volunteers from Northamptonshire Search and Rescue also supported the operation.

Officers were called by members of the public shortly before 4pm, to reports of a man in the water.

Detective Chief Inspector Johnny Campbell said: "A missing person investigation began on March 28 and concern grew after Jayran’s jacket was found hanging on a gate on Northampton Road, near the bridge over the River Tove, on April 1.

"This led to a three-day underwater search of a section of the River Tove in the area of the Watermeadows over the Easter weekend. Sadly, Jayran's body was later discovered in a different stretch of water.

"Our thoughts are with Jayran's family at this incredibly difficult time. They are being supported by specialist officers and we ask that their privacy is respected."
Jayran’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will now be prepared for HM Coroner.

Local neighbourhood sergeant, Greg Taylor, added: "Towcester is a close knit community and I know that local people are shocked and saddened by what has happened.

"My officers have spent a lot of time patrolling and conducting inquiries in the town over the past few weeks, and we very much appreciate how the local community has come together to support the investigation.

"Their assistance has been invaluable and I would like to thank them for their continued support."

The family of Towcester man Jayran, who was found in the River Tove in Towcester last April, have paid tribute to him following the inquest into his death held today, March 7, in Northampton.

Jayran, aged 20, was reported missing to Northamptonshire Police in March 2023 and concern grew further after his jacket was found hanging on a gate on Northampton Road, near the bridge over the River Tove, on April 1.

A three-day underwater search of a section of the River Tove in the area of the Watermeadows took place over the Easter weekend. Sadly, Jayran's body was later discovered in a different stretch of water.

Via the Force, Jayran’s mother Tracey has given a moving tribute to her much-loved son, praising him as a “really caring” young man who is missed by so many.

She said: “I miss you Jayran. Life is never going to be the same without you and my heart is broken.

“It makes me so sad thinking of all the things you’ll never see or experience. You’ll never enjoy holidays again, or have a family – I will never see you have children of your own, my grandchildren.

“You were just 20 years old, and a really caring and trustworthy person. It’s such a waste of a life.

“Your funeral was attended by so many people who loved you. We are remembering you and we are all missing you.”

Detective Chief Inspector Johnny Campbell, who led the missing person investigation, added:

“We note the findings of the coroner following Jayran’s tragic death last April, which devastated his family and deeply shocked the local community.
