UK - Jorge Martin Carreno, 30, found in River Cherwell, Oxford, in 2021, Scarlet Blake on trial for murder Feb 2024

''A woman has said her alleged confession to the murder of a man found dead in a river was lies, a court heard.

Jorge Martin Carreno, 30, was pulled from the River Cherwell at Parson's Pleasure, Oxford, in July 2021.

Scarlet Blake, 25, is accused of targeting him after he spent a night out with work colleagues.

She confessed to her then partner Ashlynn Bell that she had murdered him, Oxford Crown Court heard. Ms Blake, of Crotch Crescent, Oxford, denies murder.

She told jurors she had made up the details of murdering Mr Martin Carreno because Ms Bell wanted her to kill someone after making her livestream the torturing and killing of a cat.''

I think I have figured out how to do links properly now, let's see.

Early in the investigation the man's death was being considered unexplained but not suspicious:

In 2022 Thames Valley Police released the image of the person seen on CCTV again, appealing for them or anyone who could identify them to come forward, after the inquest delivered a narrative verdict:

As part of the inquest the coroner requested that further efforts are made to identify the individual in the footage as they may have witness information about what happened.

Pathologist quote from 2022,
The forensic pathologist who performed the post-mortem, Dr Brett Lockyer, said Mr Carreno was found with some bruises to the left side of his body on his head, shoulder and back which could represent injury from a third party or could be accidental from a fall.

Dr Lockyer also said there was a possibility that the injuries were caused by a “single blow to the head” and that someone could have “held him under water.”

Total coincidence of course but this is the second trial I've seen in the last few weeks of a Scarlet(t) accused of murder, with some really disturbing fantasies and thoughts - considering that's an uncommon name (and female defendents are also not so common), it's putting me off the name a bit!

That poor cat (and its owners too, having to hear what happened to their pet), that's one of the worst animal harm situations I've heard of, says a lot about her mindset. That level of horror being applied to a very relatable mammal is just... no words really (or none acceptable here).

I wonder when exactly this defendant adopted the name Scarlet Blake. The previous name was Alice Wang (and obviously there will have been others before that), and there was some rambling evidence associating "Alice" with school days and implying a sort of multiple personalities scenario.

Live blog day 8, 3:54pm
Mr Sutton KC said she said to Miss Bell she had multiple names such as Scarlett, Alice, Candy and three others.

Blake said: "Oh...Alice was someone I was predominantly interacting with people in school and that was the name I went by.

"I don't know but they sort of stopped existing. I don't understand it but one day they sort of stopped being there.

"Alice...the part of ourselves that we call Alice. Candy is still here. The other three aren't really there anymore."

A photo collage of female murderers was found on SB's phone. One can speculate that homage to Scarlet Jenkinson could have been involved in the name change, as SJ's name was out there on social media all last year (so I gather) despite only having been released by the judge a few weeks ago.

This defendant is not female. At one time around the early 2000's Scarlett did become quite a popular name .

In the evidence of day 9 alone, the words "testicles", "semen" and "adam's apple" all appear, each relating to a different member of the transatlantic polyamorous relationship, ie SB and girlfriends Ashlynn Bell (Colorado based) and Evie Brockman (Florida based).

After SB spent some time in the United States, EB then came to stay in Oxford in SB's family home for six months. I do wonder if SB's mother was also still living there (and agreed to the long-term visitor?) and if the blender was found in the kitchen or elsewhere in the house.

So presumably scarlet identifies as female if they're referring to 'her' in court?
Apologies for my ignorance but does that have to be legally accepted for that to happen? Or could anyone ask to be referred to as female/male?

I'm only up to day 5 of the live updates so apologies if it was covered

The prosecution case is that the perpetrator hit Jorge over the head with a bottle, strangled him by hand, put him in the river and possibly held him under.

Part of the defence case is that the defendant claims to have the strength equivalent to an "unfit female".

Edit: I had typed some more but some words must have triggered something

I was referring to her as female in context of the likelihood of a specific female name occurring twice in murder trials close together. I don't really see her original gender as relevant to my comment about her name - it's relevant to the case as a whole due to the chance of being substantially stronger than most women for a physical assault of course.

@geeharland
The jury have now retired in the murder trial of Jorge Martin Carreno.

They will need to decide if Scarlet Blake, 26, is guilty of killing the 30-year-old.

I'm glad I'm not on that jury, I know what I believe happened from what we've read, but not so sure how well it's been proved, there are other possibilities, however unlikely they may seem, so I could see it taking a while if not everyone feels the same way. And I hope having to see and hear that cat video evidence exempts them from jury service for a good long time, just reading about it was awful.
