A mystery body which washed up on a Welsh beach more than 30 years ago is to be exhumed after it emerged it may be the remains of a missing Irish Londoner.

Joseph Dowley, then 63, disappeared after leaving Kilkenny to get the ferry to Holyhead following a trip back to Ireland to see relatives in October 1985.

He has not been seen since but his family now believe an unidentified corpse found on a beach at Anglesey weeks later may be him.
Evidence of scars and missing teeth on the unidentified remains match what is now known about Mr Dowley, who lived in London.

On Wednesday High Court judges gave the go-ahead for a fresh inquest into the find in the hope that the body can finally be identified and Mr Dowley laid to rest.

Lord Justice Holroyde told the court the body was found with three long-standing scars on its abdomen and with several missing teeth.

A body found on a beach in Wales 33 years ago has been identified as a 63-year-old man from Ireland.

The body of Joseph Brendan Dowley, from Kilkenny, was found washed ashore at Rhosneigr on Anglesey by an RAF airman who was running on the beach on November 9 1985.
