Cardiff Crown Court heard that a planned trial date this October needed to be cancelled so doctors can assess Deeley's mental health.

To kill an old lady with a chainsaw is about as gruesome as it gets, and I shouldn't think there is much for the doctors to discuss! He needs to be sent to Broadmoor! MOO

"On Wednesday John Hipkin KC, prosecuting, told the court that three psychiatrists had separately concluded that Luke Deeley was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia when he killed Ms Fox-Roberts.

Judge Mr Justice Griffiths asked if that meant that "the defendant's mental illness substantially impaired his ability to understand the nature of his conduct, form rational judgement or exercise self control and that as a result, it was appropriate to accept a charge of manslaughter rather than murder".

Mr Hipkin agreed, saying: "We have given it great consideration and accept that plea based on the opinion of three eminent psychiatrists who are all of that view."

Sentencing on 28th April

I cannot begin to imagine her fear - I hope she was quickly unaware of what was happening to her

Mr Hipkin explained Deeley had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and due to the nature of his illness the Crown had accepted his plea to the manslaughter of Mrs Fox-Roberts by reason of diminished responsibility.

Detaining Deeley indefinitely, Judge Mr Justice Griffiths told the court: 'This was a brutal killing and dismemberment of a woman after you went into her house at night.

'I am satisfied that the most suitable way of dealing with you is under the mental health act that you are detained at Ashworth high security hospital.

'There is a high risk you will commit further serious offences if you are not detained. Detention is necessary to protect the public from serious harm. It’s not possible to say how long that will be so.'

Mr Justice Griffiths imposed a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act and a restriction order under Section 41 - meaning Deeley can be detained indefinitely.

Deeley had attempted to clean the bloodied hallway with bleach before he shaved and dyed his hair in a bid to change his appearance.

He then fled the scene and slept in a trailer in a nearby industrial estate.

CCTV footage played to the court showed Deeley talking and singing to himself while wrapped in a blanket after the attack.

He was arrested two days after the killing before he claimed he had been instructed by a "higher power" to kill someone.
