Burfield wrote texts on Katie's phone trying to explain her disappearance, says prosecution

On March 16, at 10.11am, Katie Kenyon messaged her mum stating: “I’m paranoid to death hes ganna do summert... couldn’t sleepall night xxxx."
Following Burfield's arrest, officers examined his iCloud. On March 17 he had created a 'notes' message saying: “As from tomorrow morning at 8am Bee will now be your responsibility Paul!!!” Bee is a reference to Katie Kenyon’s daughter Honey. Furthermore, the message said: “… if you can’t handle it or step up as her Dad then take her to Andy’s he will look after her properly."
The prosecution say that message was written by Burfield purporting to be from Katie. He said that message shows Burfield had murder on his mind. On March 17, at 10.50am, a similar message was written by Andrew Burfield in relation to Katie Kenyon’s son Coben.
On March 17, at 10.56am, he wrote a message (supposedly from Katie Kenyon) to himself saying: "Hey you, I'm sorry for everything."
On Saturday, March 19 a draft message was written to Katie's mum Dawn. It read: “This is the bravest thing I’ve ever had to do, I need to find some peace and sort my mind out. So with the 6k Andy gave me to pay the dept off Im being free for a wile until I figure all this s*** out."
The prosecution say Burfield was trying to explain away Katie's disappearance.

The jury is now being told about events on April 22, the day Katie went missing.

Messages are exchanged between Katie and Burfield in the morning.
Between 9am and 2pm Burfield's phone remained in Burnley, with the prosecution saying he left his phone at home.
The last outgoing call from Katie's phone was at 9.07am.

There were further communcations but the prosecution say these were made after she was dead

The jury is being told that at 9.18am, Katie arrives at Burfield's home and gets out of her car and walks to his house, wearing flip flops.
She can then be seen going into his house.
Between 9.19 and 10,24am, Katie's phone can be seen travelling to Gisburn Forest.

The prosecution say Burfield left his phone at home but Katie took hers with her, and they went in his van towards Gisburn Forest

At 9.33am on April 22 they stop at McDonald's, then two people can been seen inside Burfield's van on CCTV at around 9.50am - this is the last time Katie is seen alive

The prosecution say a Ford Transit van is then seen heading towards Gisburn Forest at 10.08am.
They went past a camera near Tosside, and the jury is now being shown some of these CCTV images with Burfield and Katie on them

The jury is now being shown images of the camera location and a map with the location of where Katie's body would later be found

The prosecution is telling the jury that in part of Gisburn Forest there is an area where no phone signal can be obtained and that between 10.24am and 11.15am, Katie's phone had no communcations and it was during this time that she was killed by Burfield.

Mr McLachlan says: "Andrew Burfield could not have been at the location where Katie Kenyon was discovered for longer than 42 minutes and 18 seconds.
"So we say Burfield has killed Katie Kenyon, during that period. We then start to see movement of Katie's phone, hitting cell sites back towards Burnley.
"We say her phone may have been in his van but Katie was not.
"Katie by this stage was in a carefully constructed grave, which had been dug the night before, and no doubt dug further on this day in question.

"In CCTV on the reverse journey taken by Burfield, only one person can be seen in his van.
"He makes his way back home. And Katie's car is still parked at his house.

"A message is then sent to Katie's daughter from Katie's phone. We say this was sent by Burfield and Katie was already dead.
"Katie's daughter then replies.

"Burfield then send a message to Amanda Cox, the woman he had been seeing, asking if they could change their date night as something had come up with the kids.

Burfield and Katie went to the pub 10 days before she went missing

There were ups and downs in their relationship and Katie was clearly not getting on with Burfield. On March 25, she sent a message to him: “Have I put a £6000 debt over your head … that I know you can’t pay just to make your life a little more harder and stressful????”
On April 1, Burfield told Katie they needed to get her "on the right path". He said she should take two weeks off work and start a course of treatment at The Priory. He said he would look after her children.
On April 9 he left a bar of Galaxy and flowers on her windscreen, trying to charm her. On April 12 they went to the Brewers Fayre pub in Burnley together. On April 20, Burfield emailed Katie asking her what was happening about a house he was supposed to be letting to her.
Katie replied: “Hi, The last message I got off you was 'F*** off' - I’m sorry but I didn’t think the house you have stated has been ready for five weeks was still still available. You said you would turn up and come and get me on the 22nd."
Friday, April 22 was the day she was went missing.

12:36

Burfield borrowed shovel from parents before driving towards Gisburn Forest

The day before Katie was last seen (April 21), she drove to Burfield's house in Todmorden Road. She was seen hugging and kissing him on CCTV before she left. Later that afternoon Burfield visited his parents address and borrowed a spade, which he put in the back of his transit van.
That evening, Burfield's van was seen on CCTV driving towards Gisburn Forest. An hour later it was seen returning. The prosecution say he was on an 'important mission' to dig Katie's grave. He was in the area for just under an hour and was back home by 10:30pm.
Shortly before midnight, a woman, Amanda Cox, who he was in a relationship with, messaged to ask how he was. He said he was in bed, 'proper knackered'
"He may well have been knackered but that was because he had been digging a grave for Katie Kenyon", Mr Mclachlan says.
The following morning Burfield dropped his children at school. There was a flurry mobile phone messages were exchanged between Burfield and Katie. He asked how she was. She said she was "excited for a new chapter". Mobile phone cell site data suggests Burfield left his phone at home. At 9.07am, Katie made her last phone call. Any calls after that time were created and sent by Burfield, the prosecution says.
CCTV shows Katie arriving at Burfield's house shortly before 9.20am. Katie is seen getting out of her car and walking towards the house. She was wearing flip flops. She was seen entering Burfield's house.
Over the following hour, Katie's phone pinged off mobile phone masts between the house in Todmorden Road and Gisburn Forest. The prosecution say Burfield left his own phone at home.

12:39

Katie's last sighting was in McDonalds

Just after 9.30am, Katie and Burfield stopped off at McDonalds. This was the last time Katie was seen alive. She did not know she was to be murdered that day, the prosecution says.
Katie's phone did not make any contact with the O2 network between 10.24 and 11.15am. There was no signal in the forest. It was during this time Burfield killed Katie, Mr McLachlan says. Burfield could not have been in the forest for much longer than 40 minutes, he said.
The prosecution say Andrew Burfield has killed Katie Kenyon during that period. Her phone then hits cell sites heading south towards Burnley. The prosecution say the phone was in Burfield's van but Katie certainly was not. By this stage, Katie was in a carefully constructed grave that had been dug the night before and no doubt dug even further on Friday April 22, it is claimed.
Only one person could be seen in the van on CCTV images taken from the return journey, the prosecution says.

Then, a first message of substance is sent from Katie's phone to Burfield, the problem being here that she was already dead, and we say that he sent that message.

"He sent a message to himself.

"In due course we will go over each and every line of that message sent by Burfield while his ex partner was in the forest in a makeshift grave.

"Here is a man trying to cover his tracks.

"Further messages are sent from Katie's phone to her son, saying she couldn't be there.

"The message was not sent by her, it was sent by Burfield.

"Again, a message was sent from Katie's phone to her daughter, telling her she loved her and she was sorry and that she should phone her dad as he would be looking after her.

"Her daughter responds asking why. These messages are sent to her mum but her mum is dead.

"This is the man in the dock literally trying to get away with murder.

"Katies phone has never been recovered, despite Burfield sending those messages.

Burfield sent further messages to Katie's daughter from Katie's phone.

"The charade then continues, and Burfield sends a voicemessage to Katie's phone saying: 'where are you i'm a bit worried, where are you just ring me, doesn't matter about the money, I love you'.

"This is sent by Burfield to a woman who he earlier put in a makeshift grave. This is him continuing with his charade.

"He then sends another voice message to her phone.

"He doesn't stop there, he sends and Instgram message to her son telling him he has a message from his mum.

"The message says: 'I’ve got a message if your mum to look after indi (the dog) wile she’s away ??? What’s happened??? Are you and bee ok? Do you want me to come down for you both ????'

At 4pm on April 22, Burfield arrives home with his kids, and by this time Katie's family are becoming concerned
Mr McLachlan is telling the jury that messages are sent between Katie's family members expressing worry about her.

He says Burfield then messages Amanda Cox.

Mr McLachlan says: "Some of Katie's family suspected Burfield, for whatever reason, as having something to do with her disappearance

"At 8.12pm, Sarah Kenyon, Katie's sister, goes looking for Katie, and looks into her car which was still parked on Todmorden Road, where she'd left it that morning.
"Burfield called the police later as things were heating up at his address, he called them saying someone was threatening to kick his door in.
"This was Katie's sister's boyfriend.
"The police arrived and Burfield got some ladders so police could look in his attic - the ladders he got from his dad the previous day.
"The police then looked in Katie's car.

Burfield sent texts to Katie's children after killing her, says prosecution

Katie's white Ford Fiesta remained at the back of Burfield's house. At 12.18pm, messages were sent from Katie's phone to her daughter. The prosecution says this was part of the charade by Burfield.
Katie's daughter replied, but she was not replying to her mum. At 12.34pm, it is alleged that Burfield messaged Amanda Cox, asking to rearrange their planned date, as something had come up with the kids.
At 1.42pm a message was sent from Katie's phone to Burfield's. The only problem, say the prosecution, is that Katie was dead. The message read: "I want you to know I'm truly sorry for everything."
The prosecution say the messsage was sent by Burfield while Katie lay in a grave in the forest.
"Here is a man trying to cover his tracks," the jury has been told.
A message was sent to Katie's son, saying: "Hey dude, I love you, sorry."
The message was to imply she had to go away, but it wasn't sent by Katie, the prosecution argues. Another message was sent to Katie's daughter Honey, saying: "I love you, I'm sorry. Your dad will be ooking after you for a wile". Mr McLachlan notes the spelling of 'while' is the way Burfield spells it.

12:44

Burfield sent voice notes to Katie's phone after she went missing

The prosecution say the man in the dock is carrying out a charade, truing to get away with murder. At 1.35pm Katie's phone was permanently disconnected from the 02 network. It has never been recovered.
However Burfield continued with the charade, sending messages to Katie's daughter, and leaving a voice note for Katie, through WhatsApp, telling her he was worried. The jury is being played the voice note.
Mr McLachlan says: "That was a message from Burfield to a woman who he had earlier put into a makeshift grave."
Burfield's voice note said: "Just ring me whenever you can. It doesn't have to be like this babz."
Burfield then messaged Katie's son on Instagram, telling him he had a message from Katie asking him to look after the dog while she was away. He asked if everything was OK and offered to visit. By 5pm, Katie's family were getting worried. Her mum Dawn messaged Katie's sister, saying: "Katie's walked out on the kids." The prosecution says this is something Katie would never have done.

Police called as Katie's family confront Burfield

Amanda Cox messaged Burfield asking how his day was. He said his back was sore. Katie's family suspected Burfield had something to do with Katie's disappearance. Her sister Sarah went to look for her and at 8.16pm things were starting to heat up at Todmorden Road. Burfield called the police to complain there was a man threatening to kick his door in. This was Katie's sister's boyfriend.
The police arrived. Burfield helped by getting them a set of ladders so they could take a look in his loft. Police also searched Katie's car, which was still at the house. The following day, Saturday April 23, Burfield was out early in his van. Between 8.30am and 10am he was working at an address in Hillingdon Road, Burnley, building an extension. There he asked the occupier a seemingly normal question. However it was to take a more sinister turn later.
He asked what time and day the bins were emptied, the jury is told. That afternoon he was seen putting something in the bin outside a Spar shop.
Officers visited his address that afternoon. The log burner was not on. However when officers visited again the fire was lit. Burfield had an iPhone 8 which he showed to the officers. He said he had received a message from Katie on the afternoon of Friday April 22. But Mr McLachlan says: "That would have been impossible."
That evening Burfield was seen again putting items in the bin outside the Spar. He placed the SIM card from his iPhone 8 into an iPhone 7. That evening Amanda Cox messaged Burfield asking if he still "cared for her". Burfield said he was concerned about Katie's safety.

The following day, on Saturday April 23, Burfield went out early in his van, and went to the Spar on Todmorden road, and between 8,30am and 10am, he worked at an address on Hillingdon Road building an extension.

"He asked the opccupier of the address, which might have seemed like a normal question, but one which would become more sinister, at what time the bins got emptied.

"He's then seen at 10.29am putting something in the bin at the Spar.

"The police then went to his house at 3 30pm. His log burner was not on.

"Later on, at 5.30pm, the police were back at his address, and his log burner was on.

"Burfield had an iPhone 8 at this time -jury please bear that in mind.

"He told police he'd received a message from Katie on the afternoon of April 22. We know that was impossible

"At 8.18pm, Burfield is back at the Spar shop putting things in the bin.

"At 8.35pm, Burfield is back at his house, and his iPhone 8 is no longer, and he placed his SIM card into an iPhone 7.

"Then later, Amanda Cox messaged Burfield asking him if he still cared for Katie, and he said yes he was concerned for her.

"Burfield was then arretsed on April 23 on suspicion of kidnap of Katie Kenyon

"On his arrest he was in possesion of an iPhone 7 - what happened to the iPhone 8? Well, more on that later.

"Moving to April 23, there are bins outside the address on Hillingdon Road where Burfield had been working.
"Police searched the bins and you can see here what came out of it.
"There's a Tesco bag with blood on it.
"In additon some flip flops were recovered from that bin- and you'll have heard earlier that we said Katie was wearing flip flops on the morning she went missing.
"There were also items addressed to him.

"He was interviewed under caution and done so on four separate dates

"The interviews commenced on 24th April and was aksed where Katie might be and he said she might be at a rehab centre.

"He said Katie was last at his house on the morning of 22nd and he had no idea where she might have gone.

"He said he had no involvement in her kidnap or disappearance.

"He told police they went to McDonalds and then he went to pick up his kids at 2.20pm and left Katie at his house.

"He said Katie had booked a treatment or something and that she'd sent messages to everyone about what was happening, and then when he got home, Katie had posted his keys through his letterbox

Burfield arrested

Burfield was arrested at 9.15pm on suspicion of Katie's kidnap. Officers noted he had a different model iPhone than the one he had been seen with earlier.
Police searched the bins at Hillingdon Road, where Burfield had been working the day before. They recovered a Tesco bag with blood on it, a pair of flip flops and items and receipts in Burfield's name. Burfield was interviewed under caution on four separate occasions.
On Aprl 24, at Greenbank Police station, Burfield said he thought Katie was at a rehab centre. However he had no idea which one. In the next interview he said Katie had come to his house at 9.20am on the Friday morning and they had gone to McDonalds. He left the house at 2.20pm to collect his kids, leaving Katie at the house alone.
He said Katie had booked 'a treatment thing' and someone was going to pick her up, referring to rehab. He said they had sex that day, while they were together, and when Katie left she had dropped the keys through the letterbox. He said he had no idea where she had gone but thought he had paid for it.
He later said he assumed it was The Priory. The reality was, he had buried her in the forest, Mr McLachlan says.

  • #309
On April 25 he said Katie had had someone picking her up from his house on 22nd and said Katie had turned up at his house unannounced.

"He was then asked about Friday 22 and described the routes he had taken while with Katie that day,

"He said on April 21, he had been in the house all day with Katie.

"Then he said that night, the Thursday, he was going to go out and do a recce and find a final place.

"He explained: 'I thought I’ll do a recce see if I can get a final place, because we were going to go and burn our things …”.

"He explained this later on when he said: ' … any issues that she’s had in week, or month, or whatever, she likes to write it down on a bit of paper and burn it, because what that’s supposed to give you is an end to it, and a release'.

12:58

Interviewed again

On April 25 he was interviewed again. He said he had not taken his phone to the forest, but Katie had hers with her. He said on Thrsday April 21 he had been in all day with Katie. She had gone to collect her children from school, but around 8pm he went to do a reccy.
He said they were going to burn their things. He said and problems Katie had, she would write down and burn them, to get a release. He suggested they went to Gisburn Forest to do that.
He said he couldn't find the right place on Thursday evening because it was too dark.
He said he didn't have keys to Katie's house, and he was an odd job man but his main concern was getting his kids to school. He said he gave Katie £6,000 in April to pay off the High Court debt which he had put on her. He said he wasn't bothered until the non-molestation order. He didn't know how to stop the court debt, so he thought the easiest thing was to pay it off.
But Katie thought he was 'spinning him a yarn', he said.

13:00

Burfield 'hit Katie with an axe'

However on April 27 there was a revelation, the court hears.
He said he had parked the van and gone to 'their place' in Gisburn Forest. They set up camp with an axe on top of the coolbox.
He said Katie opened a can of coke and said, 'I bet you can't hit the can of coke with the axe'. He said, I bet I could but it would take your arm off.
Burfield says he threw the axe to a tree but missed and hit her head.

  • #311
The interview continued on April 26.

Mr McLachlan said: "He told police Katie, his kids and himself had kets to his home address and he'd never had a key to Katie's.

"He said he was an odd job man.

"He said he gave Katie £6,000 to pay off the debt she had from the High Court debt.

"He said he wasn't bothered about the money from the High Court case, until the non-molestation order came through.

"He said the order never happened but he continued with his claim for the money as he didn';t know how to stop the order.

The interview continued on April 27 and a revelation came as Burfield wanted to speak to the police.

Mr McLachlan says: "He said that he parked the van up and went to their place (in Gisburn Forest).

"He said that they had only been there twice but regarded it as their place.

"He said that they set up camp and that the axe was on top of the cool box.

"He said that Katie opened a can of coke and said “ … I bet you can’t hit the can of coke with the axe bet I can I won’t because I’ll probably take your arm off erm and I went for the tree at the side of her and it, it hit her in head”

Burfield said that he could not pick her up because she was too heavy. He didn’t have his phone with him and didn’t know the passwords to use Katie’s phone.

"He said: I just sat there with her in my arms covered in blood honest to got it were somemat like a film I were covered from head to toe in blood'.

"He said that he was going to go home and sort out his kids and also Katie’s kids and then return and kill himself.

"He said that he could point out exactly where Katie was. However, he said that the police would be unable to find her as he had buried her

"He said that it was not planned and that the injury was caused by the back of the axe and she had no other injuries at all.

"He went on to explain in more detail what he said had happened: 'I’d thrown the axe onto a bit of wood and she said I bet you can’t take the can out my hand … I said I wouldn’t try, I’d take your bloody arm off knowing my luck,

spoke about the tree the tree behind so she went to sit down and I threw it to the tree to try and get the axe to like stick in the tree …
Yeah and it didn’t go in a tree and I’m throwing it there with both arms over my head to hit the tree and she’s down there just as she were getting down onto the picnic blanket hit her on the back of the head here'

"He said that the moment he threw the axe he shouted at Katie because it was going down rather than up.

"He said that he was about 8 to 10 feet away.

"He later said: 'I couldn’t get her to the van to her anywhere I couldn’t ring anybody there were nobody about nobody passed me at that time I just didn’t know what to do then I thought well I’ll, I’ll hide her I’ll go home and I’ll sort the kids out I don’t want her kids thinking anything I want them sorted out I’ll go back'"

Mr McLachlan is telling the jury that Burfield then buried Katie's body and covered her up.

He said Burfield told police it took him 10-15 minutes to dig the hole.

He said after he buried her he put twigs and leaves over the grave and then went home.

Mr McLachlan then tells the jury: "The final interview took place on April 27.

"Burfield said that he didn’t take the shovel with him but that it was already on his van.

"He said that he picked it up on Thursday night from his dad’s.

"He said that when Katie came to his house on the Friday she knew that they were going for a picnic.

"He said that he could dig a hole quickly because he was a builder.

"He denied that he had planned the killing.

"He said that he didn’t intend the axe to hit Katie and he was in essence saying that it was an accident.

"He agreed that he had initially lied in the first interview."

Burfield was charged with Katie's murder on April 27

"Like sommat from a film"

In a police interview, Burfield said: "I just sat there with her in my arms, covered in blood. Honest to God, it was like sommat from a film"
He said he was going to go home, sort his kids, sort Katie's kids, and kill himself. It was not planned, he said.
He alleges he threw the axe towards a tree to make it stick in the tree. He threw it with both arms over his head, just as Katie was sitting down onto the picnic blanket. But the moment he threw it, it went 'down rather than up' and he shouted at Katie.

13:05

Katie's phone and bank cards in the fire

Burfield told police he couldn't get her to the van, so he decided to hide her while he sorted her kids out. He took a spade and dug a hole to put Katie in as he didn't want anyone to see Katie, or the animals getting to her. He said he dug around 1.5ft and covered it with twigs and leaves.
He said he then put Katie's phone and bank cards in the fire and took the ashes to the bin outside the Spar.

13:06

'Previous lies'

He told police he did not take the shovel with him but it was already on his van. Katie came to his house, knowing they were going for a picnic, he said. He also told police he was quick at digging holes because he was a builder.
He admitted he had lied in previous interviews.
As a result of these revelations, Burfield was charged with the murder of Katie Kenyon.

13:06

Break for lunch

The court will now break for lunch and will resume at 2.15pm.

From the reports above ..............

Pathologist - Jamie Robinson

The post mortem confirmed the presence of severe injuries to the head with multiple scalp defects and the shattering of the bones of the skull.

"In summary, multiple head injuries caused Katie Kenyon’s death.

A Burfield

The injury was caused by the back of the axe and she had no other injuries at all.

S&BBM from Alyce’s post #302: The prosecution say that the message is important because it purports to be written by Katie but the prosecution say it wasn't, it was written by Burfield.
And Mr McLachlan say that from this message he clearly had murder on his mind and this showed a degree of pre-meditation.

The prosecution say the phone was in Burfield's van but Katie certainly was not. By this stage, Katie was in a carefully constructed grave that had been dug the night before and no doubt dug even further on Friday April 22, it is claimed.

Also BBM. Mr McLachlan stated (above in Alyce’s post) the message shows only a ‘degree’ of pre-meditation? Yet everything else that is coming out screams that this was all definitely pre-meditated. Dug her grave the day before? sheesh.

14:24

Trial resumes

The jury has returned to court. Mr Mclachlan KC will now continue to open the prosecution's case.

14:24

Expert evidence

Expert evidence will be called in the case.
The jury will hear from Alison Baldry, a forensic archaeologist who has expertise in excavation of human remains. On April 27 she attended Gisburn Forest. The same day a green handled spade was recovered from Hillingdon Road, where Burfield had been building an extension. That is the spade he had borrowed from his parents house.

14:26

Axe recovered

The same day officers searched Burfield's cellar in Todmorden Road. They discovered an axe which the prosecution say was one of the tools used in Katie's killing.
By the end of April 28, the archaeologist had formed the view that evidence was 'ambiguous'. When she examined the area it was remarkably clean and there were no obvious signs of a grave. The prosecution say that was the result of a very thorough atempt by Burfield to conceal all the evidence of grave digging.
An undisturbed root was extended over the area, which spanned across the grave. It looked like it had always been there, but it had actually been placed there by Burfield, it is alleged.
There was cut moss and clay clods which indicated recent activity. Alison Baldry will tell the jury initially she did not discover the grave, even though she was looking for it.
On April 29 she returned to the scene after being told Burfield had been taken to the scene by the police and had shown them where the grave was. As a result, Katie's body was found and excavated from the grave. The jury will be shown pixellated images showing Katie's body in situ.

14:26

Attempt to 'conceal the burial'

Ms Baldry will say there was a meticulous and thorough attempt to conceal the burial. There was strong evidence to suggest the grave was dug on Thursday April 21. It was premeditated, she says. It was not likely to have been a spur of the moment event on the day Katie died.
The excavation would have taken longer than the 46 minutes the prosecution say Burfield had at the scene. Ms Baldry said the grave had been dug prior to the killing and had been extended the following day.

Injuries to Katie 'unsurvivable'

Dr Jamie Robinson examined Katie's body at the mortuary at Royal Blackburn Hospital.
There were multiple injuries to Katie's head including lacerations and 'chop style' wounds. It is possible some of the smaller defects were caused by sharp fragments of bone, but Dr Robinson estimates there were at least 12 separate strikes. The skull had been extensively shattered to the right hand side.
There were no other significant injuries to Katie's body and there were no defensive type wounds, which would be expected if she was fending off blows from an axe.
Dr Robinson's opinion is that the blows to the head would have been unsurvivable. The lack of defensive wounds supports the idea Katie was incapacitated during the initial stages of the assault and was unable to defend herself.

14:45

Grave 'prepared'

On Thursday April 21, the prosecution say Burfield went to Gisburn Forest to prepare Katie's grave for the day after.
On April 22 he took Katie Kenyon to Gisburn Forest., they say he killed her by striking her numerous times to the head with force. The number of injuries is testament to the amount of times he hit her.

That suggestion that he threw an axe at a tree and struck her dead by accident is 'nonsense', the prosecution say. However it will be for the jury to decide on the facts of the case.

Relationship

In July 2019, Katie and Burfield began an on-off relationship. They remained living in separate houses.
On Friday May 28, 2021, a court letter was sent to Katie from HMCTS relating to a claim for £4,419 by Andrew Burfield. It required a response by June 16.
That evening Katie messaged her mum. She asked: "How else does Andrew have money? He's a fraudster and a conman. He takes people like me to court. It's f***ing disgusting and the law is always on his side xx"
On July 9, 2021, notice of a non-molestation order was to be heard at Blackburn County Court. However that order never came to fruition. Katie had applied for a non-molestation order against Burfield.

Therapy

On January 16, 2022, Katie emailed her psychotherapist Scott Knowles. She said she felt she needed to take a break from therapy. Her anxiety was the lowest it had been and she was talking about her feelings with her partner.
She thanked her therapist and said she felt she had grown from their sessions. She said she hoped she would not need further therapy. On Valentines Day, February 14, a calendar entry read: KATIE SPLIT.
That day at 12.18pm, Burfield asked bailiffs if they could obtain a High Court writ to recover money from Katie
On Friday February 18, a notice of enforcement was sent to Katie, in respect of money she allegedly owed. The original sum had now started to accrue additional charges.

Katie messaged Burfield, telling him: "Feeling an overwhelming burst of emotion about the court Babs."
He replied: "Baby, they won't even come."
Katie asked: "How can you say that?"
Burfield: "If you don't trust me, trust me with this."
Katie said she did trust Burfield, but anxiety was making her feel that way. Burfield promised he would have the money the following day and said it would be paid before the bailiffs could come.
On Tuesday March 1, Katie messaged Burfield saying she was feeling sick and anxious. She was tired of getting the kids to school and hiding on the sofa from the bailiffs. Burfield told her they could not come before Thursday. "I also think me knowing you now that some time away from the kids would do you good. Time to regroup."
Katie said she wanted to speak to someone who would look at her childhood. Burfield suggested The Priory in Manchester and said he would call them tomorrow. He promised to pay and said he would be by her side.
"I'm fed up of feeling damaged and that damage is affecting my life and everyone around me. What do you think, babs?", she said.
Burfield told Katie he agreed with everything she said. He told her: "When I went to the Priory they did a 12 day intense therapy. no outside noise. It's well dear, but at least it will give you peace. Phone them and book a consultation. I will come with you."
On Thursday March 3, Katie messaged Burfield at 9am, saying she was going to ring to check the (debt) payment had been processed. The payment was made to the debt collectors that day. She said she needed to show proof of payment as they could not find it on their system. She said she had been sick with anxiety. Burfield said he was in the bank and would sort it.
Katie checked with the debt collectors who said the fund had not been received and if payment was not made by 5pm, enforcement action would follow.
Katie messaged Burfield asking for a screenshot of the transaction from Burfield's online banking to the debt collectors. She said she was scared of bailiffs coming to her house on her son's birthday.
"I'm just f.u.c.k.i.n.g scared and feel so vulnerable", she said. Burfield said as far as he was concerned the debt had been paid. He said he was 'not having' Katie's temper or tone.
