GUILTY UK - Lee Pomeroy, 51, stabbed to death on train, Surrey, 4 January 2019

  • #41
"Lee took his son on a trip to London hoping to spend some quality time with him which was cut short by horrific and pointless attack," his family said in a statement.

"Lee would have had his birthday today but did not get to see his presents. He was an honest, bright person, who loved music very much, he knew history and art and he was a bachelor of science in Maths.

"He was devoted family man and did everything for his family. He was an honourable man and would always help somebody who was in trouble. He was a loving husband and father, he will be deeply missed by all his family."

Dear Elainera,

I, too, am so thankful that the authorities located and arrested him. Such a monstrous and vicious crime. And in front of a young boy.

The article stated that the police are supporting the family and I'm certain that the community will wrap their arms around them as well.

My heart goes out to them. May they continue to hold one another close.

I can't imagine what his son is going through. I hope he gets a lot of support for a long long time. I'd hate him to feel somehow responsible for asking to go out on a trip to London or not stepping in to help his dad. Survivor's guilt is a very real problem he faces IMO. Not to mention the trauma of seeing it all. I feel so badly for him.

Mr O'Callaghan also said detectives are confident with the arrests they have made and no-one else was being sought in connection with killing at this time.

When contacted by MailOnline, British Transport Police said it was unable to divulge the age of the man arrested this morning.

[...]

Forensic teams have been searching a field in Clandon after a local resident found a bloodied hat on the ground and said she confronted a ' sweaty nervous man' .

Officers with tracker dogs were also seen in the field.

Three uniformed officers stood guard by a wooden gate adjacent to the property less than a quarter of a mile from Clandon station.

Mother Rowena Dodwell posted a message on a local neighbourhood watch site to describe her confrontation with possibly the murder suspect.

She wrote:' Please be vigilant as I just came across a mid 20's, slim build, black beard, bald suspicious man wearing a black track suit walking around our neighbouring field, very sweaty and nervous.

'He walk to the bottom then stood in the woodland, walk back up. I asked him what he was doing and he said he had an accident?

'Our road is private and so is the field. He walked off on the phone and didn't want to chat. There was no reason for him to be there!

'Called police as he's dropped a blooded hat in field.'

I live in Guildford about 5 minutes walk from London Road station. The local community is shocked and upset about this horrific incident. I don't know Lee, but I feel so sad for his family, especially his son. They must live in my area as the London Road train to Waterloo is a slow stopping train. Clandon and Horsley are expensive residential areas with farmland just outside Guildford - remember NT Clandon Park which almost burned to the ground in April 2015? The suspect's wife or partner must have received a call and picked him up in that area.

Lee Pomeroy sounds like a lovely bloke, so sorry for his wife and son
Any word on whether he knew the killer before that fateful day?

How a trivial argument on a Surrey train turned to murder in just three minutes
Lee Pomeroy, a 51-year-old IT consultant from Surrey, exchanged words with another man as they boarded the 1.01pm South Western Trains service from Guildford London Road station bound for Waterloo.

But almost immediately the argument escalated into extreme violence and by the time the train reached the next stop of Clandon, just four minutes later, Mr Pomeroy lay dying from a stab wound to the neck.

The Telegraph article posted by dotr says (before it fades)

British Transport Police confirmed that the victim and his attacker were not known to...

I'm presuming the next words are 'each other'.

Fancy killing someone over an argument on the train! What a nutter. He was obviously looking for a fight seeing as he was carrying a knife and so quick to attack. Lock him up and throw away the key!

People never learn do they, can't remember how many times I've seen petty little fights turn into murder/serious injury because some idiot has decided he's going to carry a knife.

The government, courts and police say they're serious about tackling knife crime. If that's actually the case then we need to see sentences that match the tough talk. Currently top sentence for carrying a knife is 4 years, this needs upping to 10 years in my opinion. It won't be a deterrent but at least when these scumbags get caught with knives we know the public are protected as they're locked away for a very long time.

How upsetting for this young boy.
These ugly stories, make you think, we are never really safe: public transport, beaches, parks, our own homes, walking the dog etc etc (the list goes on and on).:(:(:(

An article on Sky implies the opposite:

'Police say they do not believe the attack was random.'

Just finding link as it popped up on my MS news thing.

Surrey train stabbing: 'Honest and bright' father Lee Pomeroy named as man killed in front of son

Police have sought to reassure the public, saying they do not believe the attack was random.

British Transport Police Assistant Chief Constable Sean O'Callaghan told Sky News the men joined the train at Guildford and a discussion occurred between them on the train.

"That continued for between three and four minutes," he said. "During the course of that discussion, both men moved to a second carriage, and that is where the violence ensued to the ferocity that we are now aware of and tragically that is where the man lost his life."

...

DCI Sam Blackburn, also from British Transport Police, said: "The investigation is moving with good progress and we are now confident to say that this is not believed to be a random assault. In the moments leading to the violent killing, both men appeared to be involved in an altercation lasting three minutes.

"Nothing justified the extraordinary violence that followed, and we are concentrating our efforts on the ongoing investigation."

I believe that by saying it was not random they are referring to the fact that the physical altercation followed on from an argument of some description.

This article says -

The victim, believed to be a 51-year-old man, was stabbed repeatedly by an apparent stranger minutes after boarding the train.

The victim and his killer, who are not thought to have known each other, both boarded the service at London Road at 1.01pm.

That was my take too...that by not random the police mean something happened between the two men prior to the attack...ie, the argument.
I feel so desperately sad for Mr Pomeroy’s family, particularly his son... he sounds like a decent member of society with much to give...who has now lost his life due to the actions of this piece of scum.....who I and others will now end up paying for, for years to come, in his comfy prison cell.
