"Murder squad detectives are investigating the discovery of “potentially hazardous” substances on a body dumped on a street.

Mystery surrounds the discovery on a residential road around 7pm last night (Thursday) in Shevington, Wigan. Police are working to identify the dead person and the substance.

Detective Superintendent Alan Clitherow, of Greater Manchester Police, said the identity and sex of the person will be confirmed once a Home Office post-mortem is held after the body, covered by a white and yellow police tent, has been removed from the scene.

Grieving relatives have paid tribute to a man who was found dumped on a street with “potentially hazardous” substances on his body.

Liam Smith’s body was discovered on a residential street at around 7pm on Thursday in Shevington, a suburb of Wigan, Greater Manchester.

In a brief statement released through Greater Manchester Police, his family said: “Liam was kind-hearted, funny, the life and soul of the party.

“He was the most devoted dad, much-loved son, brother, grandson and uncle. He will sorely be missed by all who knew and loved him.”

His family have asked for privacy while they grieve.

Murders in the NW like this are usually associated with gangs/drugs business imo.

#CHARGED | GMP charge a 38-year-old man in connection with the murder of Liam Smith.

At around 7pm on Thursday 24 November 2022, Greater Manchester Police responded to reports of a deceased body on Kilburn Drive, Shevington, Wigan.

Michael Hillier (25/02/1984) of Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, has been charged with murder.

Hillier has since been remanded into custody and is due to appear at Tameside Magistrates today (Tuesday 24 January).
