He said: “She most definitely saw me as kind of like her knight in shining armour.”
(…)
He said when Mr Smith approached the car, he opened the door and called him a “vile, disgusting rapist”.

He added: “He knew exactly what I was talking about.”

Judge Maurice Greene ordered the public gallery be cleared as members of Mr Smith’s family shouted insults at Hillier.

As Mr Smith’s mother left court, she said: “He’s (Mr Smith) not a rapist.”

The court heard that after burning out his car, Hillier returned to Fulstow’s home in York where he learnt Mr Smith had died. He told the court: “I said to Rachel ‘I know it’s not what we planned but are you happy that he’s died?’. She said ‘Of course I’m glad he’s died, who wouldn’t be after what he did to me’.” Turning to the dock, Hillier added: “Remember saying that, Rachel?”
(…)

Omg, sounds like he’s still besotted with her …

Graphically raped is very different to the nob consensual sex which she didn't think of as rape

I also think Liam would have had no clue as to why he was being called a rapist unless they'd been messaging him?

Finally I wonder if Hillier said that not to show he was besotted but that he was trying to show it was all her idea

Maybe… though he still thinks “she’s a goddess”

“In 2016 I made a list, a consensual list, of sexual encounters I had. I added to it every time,” he said.

His barrister, Louise Blackwell KC said that Ms Fulstow was number 80. Asked if there was anything different about her, he said: “She’s a goddess.
(..,)
“I still tried to protect her as much as I could, I tried to give her every opportunity to come clean. She backed me into a corner, there was no way I could tell the truth without implicating Rachel.

“It’s something I didn’t really want to do, but I was given no choice. I’m absolutely heartbroken it’s come to that.”

As the murder trial entered its sixth week, the public gallery at Minshull Street Crown Court had to be cleared by the judge while Hillier was questioned about the killing on Monday. Remarks were shouted from the gallery including ‘he’s not a rapist’, ‘you piece of s***’ and ‘rot in hell, both of you’.
(…)
He told jurors that other plans had also been considered including having his ‘penis severed’, but that he ‘couldn’t go through with it’. He told the court that he bought a blank firing gun and converted it after carrying out ‘experiments - adding that it "wasn’t intended to cause grievous bodily harm or kill" but was "intended just to stun him".

It's a shame the reporting doesn't detail her reaction to him asking if she remembered

Michael Hayton KC put it to him that he was trying to ‘seek to convict Rachel Fulstow of a criminal offence'. “Much to my reluctance,” Hillier said.

“I hate that it has come to this. Do you think I want to implicate the woman that I love in this?”

Mr Hayton continued: “All you want is to cause her to be convicted." The defendant replied: “I have been backed into a corner, where I have got no choice.

Summing up the case, Judge Maurice Greene reminded the jury of Ms Fulstow's evidence about sex with Mr Smith, which she said she did not consider to be rape.
Speaking from the dock, Mr Hillier said: "It's not sex, it's rape.
"What sort of message does that send out? Sex is consensual, rape isn't."

He was removed from the dock by security officers.
Before the jury was sent out to consider its verdict, Louise Blackwell, defending Hillier, said Mr Hillier apologised.
Judge Greene replied: "Emotions run high, as I've already mentioned."
Earlier, he told the five men and five women on the jury they did "not really need to decide" what happened when Mr Smith met Ms Fulstow.
He said: "As to what really happened on that night we will probably never know and it probably doesn't matter."

So glad the jurors recognised the potential involvement of RF in Liam’s death.

Now, after a six week trial at Minshull Street Crown Court, Hillier and Fulstow have both been found unanimously guilty of murder after jurors deliberated for six hours and 44 minutes.
There were cries of 'yes' and 'thank you so much' from Mr Smith's family in the public gallery when the jury returned its verdicts. They were seen crying and hugging. Hillier, handcuffed in the dock, looked over at his ex Fulstow

Well done to the judge as well:

In his summing up, Judge Maurice Greene told jurors they did not need to decide what happened between Mr Smith and Fulstow, stating: "As to what really happened on that night, we will probably never know and it probably doesn't matter."

What are we thinking for sentencing?
I think Hillier's looking at 30 years minimum for the premeditation, use of a firearm and acid.
Fulstow I'm thinking 15-20 years minimum as her role is more 2nd degree, with the PTCOJ charge being served concurrently.

Both handed life sentences, with Hillier ordered to serve a minimum 33 years behind bars and Fulstow a minimum 30 years

Handing down the sentence, Judge Green said: "Fulstow, you are sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years.

"Hillier, you are sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 33 years."

There are cries from the public gallery whilst they are taken down.

Uproar in court

Hillier shouted back to the family of Liam Smith: "Your boy's a rapist", leading to a number of people shouting 'evil', 'you should hang from a noose' and 'evil b***h'.
