Why are the jury there? I thought the judge decides on the sentence?

The judge does but the jury can be there for sentencing (not sure if that is mandatory though or personal choice) I would want to be there for sentencing if I had sat on a jury

They normally have the option to voluntarily attend sentencing.

I wonder if all 12 jurors have attended.

They are allowed to attend if they want to - that's why I was wondering if they all came back. I know if I had been a Juror I would want to be there for sentencing, but then, sometimes people have commitments and are not able to be present.

They will have been invited back (not compulsory) to sit in the court during sentencing. They don't have a role, but I think it's considered to be partly closure for them, seeing it through to conclusion, after determining the verdict.

'You will not be released until the Parole Board decide it is safe to do so'

Justice Lambert outlines what she has to consider when sentencing Relowicz.

She said: “The offence is murder has a fixed sentence of life imprisonment. I must set the minimum term you will serve in custody.

“It reflect not only the murder but also the offence of rape. Even after you have served that term you will not be released until the Parole Board decide it is safe to do so. You may never be released and if you are you will be on licence for the rest of your life.

Judge going over Relowicz's previous crimes

Justice Lambert is recapping Relowivz's previous sex crimes.

She said: “The sentencing judge in 2019 referred to your offending as a perverted campaign of sexually deviant behaviour and he was correct to do so.

"In the weeks and months before you raped and killed Libby your offending escalated, no doubt because you were confident you would not and could not be caught."

Judge accepts Relowicz did not go out that night intending to kill

Justice Lambert said: “I accept you did not go out intending to kill but only for the purpose of sexual gratification. I accept you may not have intended to kill Liberty."

But she did say concealing the body by throwing Libby into the River Hull was an aggravating factor.

She also says Libby was vulnerable and he prowled the streets looking for a victim.

She said his previous convicitons were aggravating and there were no mitigating factors.

Not as long as I'd hoped. But hopefully he will never see daylight again.
