Teenager inspired by Southport killer who planned attack on Oasis concert sentenced

McKenzie Morgan had an al-Qaeda manual on his phone and was inspired by Southport killer Axel Rudakubana. His targets also included a dance school.

''A teenager who was inspired by Southport killer Axel Rudakubana has been sentenced after he planned an attack on an Oasis concert.

McKenzie Morgan, from the village of Llanfrechfa near Cwmbran in South Wales, can be named for the first time after he turned 18.

He has been detained for 14 months after admitting at the Old Bailey to possessing a document useful for terrorism.

Morgan had talked of emulating Axel Rudakubana who killed three girls aged six, seven and nine, during a knife attack on a Taylor Swift-themed dance class during the summer holidays in July 2024.

Morgan, who was aged 17 at the time and living with his parents, conducted research into obtaining large knives and, in a chat with a friend on April 19 last year, sent an image of a large knife for sale online saying, "would this work?".

That's just completely unreasonable. You can't live your life today without the internet. Until recently, you could get married at 16 here. You can join the military when under 18 - but not in a combat role, and can get a driving licence at 17. You can even buy alcohol in a pub at 16 if it's with a meal and you can drink in private at essentially any age over 5.

It is up to parents and their active and responsible involvement into upbringing IMO.

Parents can use parental control tools
(e.g. Google Family Link or Apple Screen Time and many more).

Regular conversations about what the child does online
and what threats he or she may encounter there.

Gradually increasing freedom as the child grows up and develops digital competences.

It all comes down to responsible and effective parenthood.
One cannot prohibit everything and be complacent.

My personal opinion is that children's minds are extremely susceptible to external influences and alot of what is on the Internet these days is awful and absolutely not for the eyes of impressionable children still finding their way in the world. It's OK to say oh the parents need to parent better but the parents can't follow them to school and see what they are looking at on school computers, if their children go over to friends houses the friends parents might not have parental controls on Internet use etc. You cannot watch your kids every single second of every single day! It's impossible.

Maybe not ban it but it definitely needs tighter regulation especially when it comes to people under 18. There's no coincidence that more children than ever are suffering with mental health issues, children are lured away by paedophiles pretending to be kids, children going missing, children are encouraged to comitt suicide by online groups goading them and then there's the children who already have issues and are full of hate and in a few clicks they can buy weapons and manuals how to make poison! It's madness!! There needs to be better education for both children and parents of the dangers lurking online.

There are reports, currently unconfirmed, on X that Axel Rudakubana has been attacked in prison when a number of men forced him to drink bleach. No other information at present.

The rumours were unsubstantiated. He is being held in a segregation precisely due to fears that he could be vulnerable to attack.
