UK-Manchester, Attack on Synagogue

Try and stem the bleeding. Or just comfort him. Nobody was helping him. The guy filming on his phone was stood right by him.
Agree. In the video in the DT, the Police shout "somebody stay with casualties".
I think it's a sign of our times when some folk just whip out a phone and film instead, sadly. But that's just my opinion.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said police had been deployed to synagogues across the country in response to the attack, which took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

Earlier in the morning, police said the suspect had "suspicious items" and a bomb disposal unit had been called in. Investigators also heard a "loud noise" while entering the suspect's vehicle, police said, adding that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

''An assailant drove a car into people outside a synagogue in northern England on Thursday and then began stabbing them, killing two and wounding three seriously in an attack on the holiest day of the Jewish year, police said.

Police shot and killed the suspect, said Greater Manchester Police. It took police some time to confirm he was dead because of concerns he had an explosive on him''

'Immediately after the attack, police have declared “Plato,” the national code-word used by police and emergency services when responding to a “marauding terror attack.”

I live very near a synagogue that has been using hired security for years. It is tragic, I agree, but perhaps not something new for the Jewish community. :( I'm in the USA.

I'm in the UK, not Jewish myself but my understanding is that many synagogues have been prepared for the possibility of an attack like this for several years.

One particularly heartbreaking detail mentioned by the BBC is that many people completely disconnect from TV and the internet on Yom Kippur, which means that a lot of people are going to be greeted with this horrific news when they turn their devices back on after sunset.

I am so sorry, wishing you and Manchester community, a lot of strength and prayers to somehow process what happened.

A lot of SM rumors going on, that Manchester is in complete lock down, hospitals, schools.
Some speculate, the police are searching for other accomplices, as well..
The BBC live thread reported earlier that some arrests were made nearby, not confirmed to be linked to this case, but a pretty safe assumption given the scale of the police presence IMO: Police say Manchester synagogue attack in which two died has been declared terrorist incident

They also said in that thread that some local schools and hospitals were placed on lockdown as a precaution, but I'm pretty sure that was just in the immediate area. My sister works in the city centre and I haven't heard that anything out of the ordinary is happening where she is

Isolated attack or was there a wider plan, Starmer back early from a European summit, maybe preplanned should the code word 'Plato' be used.

Police said it had “declared Plato” – the national code-word used by police and emergency services when responding to a “marauding terror attack”.

From The Gaurdian livestream:

Police declare Manchester synagogue attack 'terrorist incident'

Assistant commissioner Laurence Taylor, national head of counter-terrorism policing, says the attacker has been shot dead by the police and it believed counter-terrorism police know his idenity.

“Based on what we know, counter-terrorism police have declared this a terrorist incident,” he says at a press conference outside Scotland Yard in London.

There have been two additional arrest, he says.

Taylor says an attack on the Jewish community on Yom Kippur is “devastating” and says the police are “mobilising fast” to reassure the Jewish community across the country.

Two additional arrests. Curious about that.

Two men were arrested in nearby White House Avenue, about 1,500ft from where this morning's carnage took place. The attacker has been shot dead by the police.'
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said ...We believe we know their identity, but for safety reasons at the scene, we're unable to confirm at this stage.'Three other members of the public are in a serious condition. We have also made two further arrests.

Elite officers armed with assault rifles and Glock pistols are now standing guard outside a property in the 'quiet' White House Avenue, which was raided earlier today.
A cordon is also in place, with a large number of police vehicles seen blocking the cul-de-sac, made up of semi-detached homes.
A man who lives in the street claimed he saw two men in handcuffs being led away by police. The male said: 'They've arrested two people on our road.

Hero Rabbi Daniel Walker barricaded worshippers inside the building after the suspect crashed into the gate and began stabbing 'anyone and everyone'.One witness described him moving from victim to victim in a 'robotic' manner 'like he had a job to do' - targeting 'anyone' wearing a Kippur. He then tried to force his way inside before being shot dead by armed police at 9.38am.

I wonder if the house where the arrests were made was where the suspect lived, and those arrested were his family members.

Or fellow terrorists.

SAS were on the scene within a short time. There will be concern about further attacks.

I wonder if they had some intelligence that an attack was imminent ,but had no Intel on where and by whom.

Could be that the Jewish holiday was enough for heightened awareness, sad to say.

'Our thoughts are with the victims
and the families of the terrible attack at Heaton Park Synagogue.

The fact that this tragedy occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar,
makes it all the more shocking.

We are thinking of the entire community
as well as the emergency responders
who attended this terrible incident'.

The message was signed 'W & C'."

'Get back... he has a bomb, go away': Video shows armed police outside synagogue

We can bring you footage as the incident unfolded, which shows police trying to get members of the public away from the suspect.

"Everybody else, get back. If you're not involved, move back, get away... he has a bomb, go away," an officer can be heard shouting.....

A loud controlled explosion has just been heard at the police cordon in Crumpsall.

The bomb disposal unit is understood to be at the scene.....

A device worn by the suspect was "not viable"
