UK-Manchester, Attack on Synagogue

BBC reporting that ISIS specifically called for attacks against Jewish targets in Britain last month (Starmer says Britain must defeat rising antisemitic hatred after two killed in Manchester synagogue attack). I did wonder if the suspect was linked to them when I saw his picture - the hand position holding up the index finger is something I've seen photos of previous ISIS-linked terrorists doing
I've just read a similar article in the DT saying that ISIS has organised itself into regional franchises with a central leadership.
I guess we'll have to wait and see if the perp was affiliated to any specific group. The article also says that the device the perp was wearing was not viable, which the writer has likened to an ISIS 'calling card'.

"1.19pm - The sound of a loud explosion was heard at the scene as officers gained entry to the attacker's vehicle.

2.18pm - Police confirmed the suspect in the attack had died.

3.21pm - In a press conference, Counter-terrorism Policing Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor confirmed the attack is being treated as a terrorist incident and that two arrests have been made."

"Kate and William send their thoughts to victims and families after 'terrible, shocking' synagogue attack

as they thank emergency responders.

View attachment 617839

'Our thoughts are with the victims
and the families of the terrible attack at Heaton Park Synagogue.

The fact that this tragedy occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar,
makes it all the more shocking.

We are thinking of the entire community
as well as the emergency responders
who attended this terrible incident'.

The message was signed 'W & C'."

Good to see, the compassion from the future King & Queen.
God bless them!

Suspect named as Jihad Al-Shamie, a British Syrian.

Also -

"Two men aged in their 30s and a woman in her 60s have been arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism connected to the synagogue attack, police added."

Those ages definitely make it sound like it's his family who helped him.

Now I think of it, the style of the attack (car ramming followed by stabbing) is also the same MO as the ISIS attacks that happened in London a few years ago

Similar Modus Operandi as in Michigan Mormon Church attack.
But there is a knife instead of a gun.
(more difficult to get such weapon in the UK I guess)
And the perp here couldn't enter the building so no explosives could start the fire.

I guess such perps have similar way of thinking.

Very true, I guess they all go for whatever they think will maximise the number of casualties. The only silver lining in this case is that the perp didn't have a gun (or any real explosives, as far as we know)

Thank you @MrsWatson for starting this thread.

I’ll never get numb to this.

We Jewish people have been attacked for millennia. Even now here in NYC where we have felt safe forever.

Attacking Jews at worship, on our holiest day. Attacking Mormons at worship.

It is now literal and not just a figure of speech—-IS NOTHING SACRED?

May their memory be a blessing.

Manchester is my closest city, so this one stings a little.

I'm not religious at all, but I do believe that people have a right to practice their religion in safety. What a world we live in at the moment :(

It sounds like he intended to do much worse and I'm grateful for those that intervened and stopped him.

An Islamist terrorist who killed two men outside a synagogue came to the UK from Syria as a young child and grew up just around the corner from the site of the attack.

Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, who was shot dead minutes after he targeted Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester yesterday, is understood to have been granted British citizenship in 2006 when he was a teenager, aged around 16.

His innocent victims have been named as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. They were both members of Manchester's Jewish community.

May they rest in peace.

Greater Manchester Police have released a statement announcing that one of the victims who died in the attack was hit by one of the bullets fired by officers at the attacker. It's not clear from the statement (IMO) whether the bullet wound was the victim's cause of death or whether he also had other injuries

It sounds like it was just a tragic accident rather than a mistake by police - the victim is believed to have been behind the synagogue door which a bullet went through when police fired at the suspect.
