Officers are continuing their inquiries to locate missing Downham Market, Norfolk woman Mary White.

Mary was last seen at her home address in Nelson Avenue at around 10pm on Tuesday 24 September 2024.

She was reported missing by family the following morning when it was discovered she was no longer in the house.

CCTV shows the 73-year-old walking along Railway Road at 3.30am on Wednesday 25 September 2024 wearing white pyjamas.

There have been no sightings since, and Mary remains missing.

Over the last six days specialist search teams including the marine unit and police drone have carried out extensive searches around the town, in open areas, and along the riverbanks.

They have also searched insecure buildings and carried out door-to-door inquiries.

These specialist searches are now largely complete.

Officers will continue regular searches in the area and are also carrying out ongoing inquiries.

Chief inspector Chris Banks said: “We do have to be open to all possibilities and our focus remains on finding Mary.

“Clearly this is a distressing time for her family and we continue to keep them updated.”

Mary is described as around 5ft tall and of slim build, with shoulder-length grey hair.

Anyone who has seen Mary or has any information about where she may be is asked to contact Norfolk Police on 101 quoting ref 48 of 25 September 2024.

There is sad news coming through about Mary. Norfolk Constabulary have issued the following statement:

Police can confirm a body has been found in the water at Bentinck Dock. The discovery was made by a member of the public just before 11am on Thursday 31 October 2024. Police and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service have been on scene.

Formal identification has yet to take place but the family of Mary White has been informed.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner in due course.

An inquest into Mary's death was opened last month , a full inquest will take place later this year.




Mystery surrounds the death of a woman who was found a month after she first went missing, a court has heard.


Mary White's body was found at Bentinck Dock in King's Lynn by a member of the public on October 31 last year.

The 73-year-old had last been seen at her home in Nelson Avenue in Downham Market at around 10pm on September 24.

Mrs White was reported missing by family members the following morning after they discovered she was no longer in the house.


CCTV footage showed her walking along Railway Road in Downham Market at 3.30am on September 25 wearing her pyjamas, but there had not been any further sightings of her.

Area coroner Samantha Goward opened an inquest into her death at Norfolk Coroner's Court. It heard that surgeon Alan Hadcock had identified her body by reviewing dental records.

The coroner added that the cause of the retired shoe worker's death was "unascertained due to decomposition".

Mrs White's daughter, Katherine Bright, confirmed her mother was born in Littleport in Cambridgeshire.

A full inquest into her death will take place later this year.
