why there how would police know that?
I guess it's just people and cars they haven't been able to rule out of enquiries. The direction of the enquiry seems to have shifted several times over the years.

"Melanie’s remains were discovered in a field close to the northbound slip road at junction 14 of the M5, near Thornbury, in Gloucestershire.
That’s nearly 30 miles away from where she was last seen at Cadillacs nightclub in Bath - it’s still unclear why that spot was chosen.
Even Det Supt Riccio noted: “It’s quite an odd place to dump a body.”
In the [Channel 5] documentary forensic criminologist Professor Jane Monckton-Smith backed the claim.
She pointed out that the person who dumped the body would “have to know are there any cameras around? What's the likelihood of a police car, a patrol car, a speed camera, all of these different things”.
Due to being such an obscure location, he believes it’s “highly likely” the person was familiar with the area - meaning they may be local to Gloucestershire.
Det Supt Riccio has previously emphasized that the person who disposed of Melanie’s body may not have killed her.
The decision to leave her body somewhere so remote, where she would go undiscovered for more than a decade, could also suggest the individual was a professional.
Professor Monckton-Smith said: "What a place to leave a body, in some ways a really good place, because, a slip road, on the motorway, you're not getting your usual dog walkers and your joggers coming past.
"Which I think is why Melanie's body lay where it did for so long. It was more than likely a deposition site.
“The murder and murder scene is somewhere else that the police still don't know. I think that whoever left Melanie's body, was at least familiar with that area."
In October 2013, four years after Melanie’s remains were discovered, police made what they described as “significant and very interesting” discovery in the case.
They “found and recovered” a white Volkwagen Golf GTI that was examined by forensic scientists.
While their findings were not revealed it seemed to lead to a breakthrough as five months later, in March 2014, police appealed for information about a second car of the same colour, make and model.
They wanted to speak to anyone who owned a vehicle of that description with the registration plate C752 CYE between April and August 1996.
The car disappeared from records shortly after Melanie’s disappearance in June and had been linked to the Cardiff and Pentwyn area in Wales.
What happened to the vehicle remains unknown - and it has been suggested the killer or an accomplice may have used it."

"Convicted sex killer Marc Shillibier, 37, is already serving life for the vicious 1999 murder of teenager Rebecca Storrs, 18, who spurned his advances at a party.
The evil dad-of-two once confessed to a cellmate that he had also killed hospital worker Melanie [Hall], 25, whose remains were found in a bin bag on the side of the M5 this week - 13 years after she disappeared from a nightclub in Bath.
He later withdrew his claim - made three years after she vanished - and refused to co-operate with detectives investigating the disappearance.
He also stood trial in 1998 for the murder of a 45-year-old gay man who, it was claimed, he had picked up for sex and later stabbed and set alight.
He was acquitted but police made it clear they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the killing and always left the case open....

Remembered hearing about this case growing up. Actually thought it had been solved years back but that was Melanie Road, very errie both were from Bath and disappeared on the same date 12 years apart!
I do find the boyfriend at the time account of that weekend a little surprising.
O.k arguments on nights out are nothing new. It says though she was going to stay at his place that weekend and had stuff there.
Did he not think on the Saturday or Sunday to contact her parents if he assumed she was at their home. I mean that would be the logical thing to do if she didn't turn up at his place on the Saturday....or Sunday.
For the alarm only to be raised when she didn't turn up for work 48 hours later is puzzling to me.
They'd only been going out for a month but he'd known her for a year so surely in that situation there is a bit of concern if she's uncontactable. And if he didn't want to contact her....why? One argument and she dosen't exist anymore.

I think that could easily be put down to hurt pride. Let her make the first move kind of thing. Of course he should have checked she was ok later but I can easily buy that he was hurt and in a huff and didn't want to look weak by calling her first or something. The police checked him out and cleared him.
It's strange that he doesn't call the Hall family home on the Sunday, but what's he going to say if Melanie's mum or dad answer the phone? Very awkward call if Melanie isn't there and has spent the night with her new beau.
Perhaps PK expects Melanie to come grovelling round. A lot of her possessions are at his flat. Does he take them to work with him on the Monday to give back to Melanie?
Does he attempt to find Melanie when he arrives at work on the Monday? They both work at the same place, so does he checked if she's clocked in for work etc?
That weird YouTube video (from a few posts back) claims that PK parked his car in the underground car park. I'd like to see a source for that being his confirmed parking spot that night.
AFAIK they went out on the Saturday night. It was the first game of the Euro 96 football tournament that day.
So Melanie was reported missing within 36 hours of last being seen.
I wonder who reported Melanie missing on the Monday. PK or someone else?

My apologies. So just the Sunday then she was unaccounted for and "missing" without those closest to her actually realising. That puts a different perspective on it as you could then have 24 hours to cool off from the BF POV.
Melanie was apparently reported missing on the Monday evening.
At 3.15pm her mum (who also worked at the hospital) put a note on Melanie's car asking Melanie to call her.
I'm not sure if Melanie's mum knew PK from work, or as Melanie's new boyfriend.

The Crimewatch reconstruction shows PK parking in the street (rather than in the main carpark).
PK is shown wearing a white Tshirt and black jumper. The witness who provided the description for the composite sketch, described a man, very smartly dressed, wearing a brown shirt.
AFAIK PK was cleared by police because his car was seen on CCTV leaving Walcot Street, and then wasn't picked up on CCTV in the following 36 hours or so.

How far was his house from the centre of Bath? Easily walkable from there or some way out in the suburbs.

Yeah, I thought it had been solved. Too many Melanies. Also thought Christopher Halliwell was involved but that seems unlikely.
The cops seem to have cleared the good doctor but his story is a bit daft. He wasn't a teenager and yet he acted like one. He had been with Melanie most of the day and she had left some of her stuff at his place. Yet he didn't bother about her "disappearance" at all. If the creator of the video I linked is correct he went back to Germany soon after and was arrested on his return.
Reminds me a bit of Vincent Tabak who went back to the Netherlands after the murder of Joanna Yeates in Clifton, Bristol. He implicated poor old Christopher Jefferies, who I happened to be well acquainted with back in the '70s. He was a big fan of John Milton and DH Lawrence. Possibly still is!

No idea where that bloke got the info that Dr K had parked in the Podium car park. He seems like a fanatic to me if you look at the FB page he has created. But is there hard evidence that the doctor parked in Walcot Street? I know Walcot Street fairly well and I'm not sure how easy (if at all possible) it would have been to park there on a Saturday night in 1996.
Dr K acted very childishly for a grown man to say the least.
Melanie Road was murdered by Christopher Hampton. I've never seen anything to link Christopher Halliwell to Bath.
Christopher Hampton used to live in central Bath and was a member of the snooker club which later became Cadillacs nightclub.
One of the Batman rapist victims said she thought Hampton was the man who followed her in 1994. There was a suspected Batman attack in another carpark in central Bath a few hours before Melanie disappeared. The police no longer seem to link this attempted abduction to the Batman rapist though.
Hampton doesn't match the DNA from the Batman case though. I'm not sure if he's been ruled out as the source of the partial profile from the Melanie Hall case.
Funnily enough nobody seems to have come forward saying they saw Melanie looking for her boyfriend. Nobody recalled her asking them to check if her boyfriend was in the gents, or anything like that.
Did Melanie know he had stormed off, or was she hanging around thinking he was still somewhere in the crowded club?
Was she planning to go back to PK's flat, or was she going to leave with a new man and head back to his place? Was Melanie some sort of femme fatale who went to a nightclub with one man and left with another?

Unlikely. And if she was not in a habit of behaving like that, why would PK even begin to assume that's what she had done? It's very narcissistic behaviour on the surface of it -- his pride is wounded and that overrides logic and any sense of concern for Melanie's safety and wellbeing. How long had they been going out together?
