''Spattered across a row of homes, the red paint that appeared on the front of houses in north-east London this week was as unwelcome as it was inexplicable.

Yet the vandalism was not confined to this corner of Walthamstow – the second such attack in a fortnight – it mirrors other incidents in communities across the country that have left local residents seeking answers from police and local councils.

Huddersfield, Bradford, Reading, and a number of London boroughs have seen similar attacks. In each case, red paint has been splattered on the front doors of houses at night, often accompanied with the daubing of numbers and the word “brothel”.

''Several Walthamstow residents have expressed alarm after they became the latest victims of vandals who are daubing homes across the borough in red paint, motor oil and “brothel” graffiti.

Attacks on Chingford Road homes in the early hours of Thursday (13th March) and Tuesday (18th March) come after identical incidents in Leyton and Leytonstone in February that left residents there shaken.

On both days, vandals splashed red paint and motor oil on several homes along Chingford Road before putting handwritten notes through letterboxes that allege a house on their street is a brothel. ''

''Footage captured by residents’ Ring cameras on 19th February showed two hooded males carrying buckets and walking into front gardens.''

''Identical vandal attacks on homes and businesses across London and the rest of the country have been reported in recent years. ''

One of the buildings in Huddersfield was actually a brothel. Dodgy landlord who doesn't follow planning regs on listed buildings and has residential let as well as business (round the back, up a fire escape) when he's only meant to have a commercial let. Family who lives next door suffer terrible with landlord's poor building maintenance due to flooding on and in their property. Brothel gone now, landlord remains - guess the cladding he put on was to 'rebrand' the business let. Other brothel graffiti nearby seems to have been mistaken identity (not that it's warranted), and in addition, frankly presumptuous/based on racism. It's in the best interests of local constituents if councils enforce planning regs as it instantly helps detect dodgy operators. Current business owner letting property is lovely and doesn't deserve her dodgy landlord, but council has done nothing - white render and polystyrene cladding was installed week of Grenfell enquiry. Just bizarre disregard for adjoining listed buildings, fire regs etc. Kirklees planning doesn't seem to care about historic buildings, a bit like Calderdale.
