I've been close to drowning twice. One time was in the middle of a busy swimming pool. I went under and back up several times. I was fighting for breath and it was all totally silent because I couldn't breathe. On possibly my last surfacing, someone, totally unaware, happened to be going past with a life belt which I grabbed.
Another time I got swept out into the North Sea by an undertow. There was no point in shouting - was just trying to stay afloat and not swallow too much water. I was rescued after an hour.

I‘m interested (and impressed) you managed to survive an hour in the north sea - what time of year?

Does anyone remember how this case first presented in the media? I have to admit I don't remember actively reading about it until a few days after she went missing, was it a big story from the off? Or did it gain momentum on social media due to the mysterious nature and the media followed? Just interested as I cannot recall myself.
I do remember it. It was pretty much a local news piece which I saw online originally, 2 or 3 days after the event. It struck me initially because the 27th was my own daughter's birthday and I mentioned to my husband that a woman had gone missing whilst walking her dog, after which it was began making small national announcements then quickly gathered pace. The original bits I read seemed to morph into something else and the accounts became what I would call 'distorted'. We could assume poor or inaccurate reporting, there has been so much confusion as to what was said in the beginning to what is being said now. I was interested in what was being reported at the beginning when these things are fresh in peoples minds, but we can't unfortunately rely on complete accuracy from witnesses or journalists being the gospel truth so to speak

Why did she not wear a hat when it was cold?

I was wondering that she didn't have a hat on when most of her FB posts seem to show that she walked wearing her hair down and with a bobble hat on rather than a ponytail.

None of that post contradicts what I have been stating. Yes they can see when it has been synched - no they can't see data in the app that hasn't been synched. Nothing is on the servers that hasn't been uploaded to the phone, Fitbits don't have that capability - it's still local to the device.
Since you’ve quoted my original post, I’ll happily say I’ll politely agree to disagree. I won’t mention Fitbit again. Thanks. MOO

spooky!

whole case feels like news media trying to view a ( probable) accidental drowning thru the true crime lens. For clicks, for £££
( Media could've focussed eg on the appeal to 700 vehicles for dash cam, that would have been more constructive imo)

It's also alarming the lack of any journalism e.g. why don't they speak to the owners or law enforcement before writing nonsense?

The house isn't even on the same side of the river which seems a pretty big problem for these 'theories'

My OH is 5'0, slight build and is 62kg.

Why do you say it's not relevant to the case? I thought the whole point of this forum is to raise, consider and discuss theories? How on earth can you suggest that something is not relevant?

Maybe the fact that no one was around to hear something large making a splash in the water?
What about the wash created?

Again, it makes you think that maybe she didn't go into the water at all?

If she went in and was struggling to get out then why did no one hear any shouting? Surely people at the campsite would've heard?

Unless she was unable to shout!
I think he was conceding that his response might be construed as pedantic (as in correcting the exact weight).

maybe we should all take the ' string' detail with a pinch of salt too ?( seeing as this other abandoned house aspect proved untrue)

I agree, all though probably well intentioned, family and friends ‘updates’ are proving to be contradictory to each other for whatever reason that maybe.

yes, but they need a court order to obtain that information and then fitbit need to act on it. Are the Fitbit servers in the UK does anyone know, because if they're not, it will take time to serve that court order in the US or anywhere else outside the jurisdiction of the UK. So, in short, the police may not have the fitbit info yet.
IMO I think they’re US based. MOO

  • A passerby discovered the phone at around 9.35 a.m. It was still connected to the conference call. Her brown spaniel was found running loose between the gate to the field and the bench. Lancashire Police confirmed to CNN that the dog was dry and did not appear to have entered the water.
Bulley’s partner of 12 years, Paul Ansell, rushed to the scene after receiving a call from his daughters’ school that the family dog had been found, Bulley’s friend told the Mirror. He quickly phoned the police.

During Friday’s press briefing, Superintendent Riley said officers were “particularly interested” in the time between the phone being placed on the bench at 9.20 a.m. and the device being recovered 10 minutes later.

“We only have a 10-minute window in which we cannot account for Nicola’s movements,” she said.

They neglect to mention the fact that PA wasn't informed for at least another hour after the 9:35am events.

IMO this window is the important one.

This is absolutely ridiculous, you can’t just go into other peoples property.

Interesting from thr article

“Heather Gibbons, who has been speaking on behalf of the family, said she had personally spoken to the owner and he had searched the abandoned house and derelict outbuildings.

She said on Facebook: 'Here are some facts that need to be known.

'It's not abandoned. Its owned by a lovely family who have lived in this village for generations and would do anything they can to help in the search for Nikki.

'It has been searched, inside and outside, from top to bottom by the police. I have clarified this with the family themselves and also with the police. They have never refused entry to the police or told them they need a warrant to search'.”

Yet another family/friend spokesperson who ‘knows’ and this is in direct conflict to the other family/friend spokesperson who said it hasn’t been searched.
Tilly I think her name is, has apologised for getting it wrong and said she is leaving SM because of the abuse she's getting.

"they somehow remotely accessed my Fitbit data & told me when I had last synched it & the last time I had charged it successfully."

This data will be in the app and therefore on the Fitbit servers. LE will have had this info from NB's phone. IMO
its brilliant that they can do this remotely on Fitbits, , but I heard Nikki Fitbit hadn't been synced since the Tuesday before she went Missing, I'm not sure where that information came from, probably family & friends, if LE do have some evidence on the Fitbit to say she's in the water they should share it the family & possibly the public to stop the speculation that's growing of an abduction, but to me it still wouldn't prove she was in the water as her asalient could of thrown it in, her heart rate could show a massive peak when being attacked then went off when it was discarded in river. jMO.. & why are LE looking at dash cam footage to see if she left area if they truly believe she's in river, ? jMO this case is baffling but it's good to know that information on Fitbits..

Sorry if I wasn’t clear - I was referring to water level compared with some specific photos posted upthread which were taken in summer when the river looked unusually low probably due to seasonal variations.

I think a poster was trying to ascertain whether the river could be crossed on foot between the bench and the weir and my view is not with current water levels. That section would almost certainly be too deep to wade.
May have been me - but maybe the river is fordable by something like a quad bike? Down by the area the vehicle tracks end there is a sandbank that can be seen on google maps, implies the river is maybe shallower.
I can't get my head round why, if NB walked voluntarily or otherwise out of the bench area, as some are suggesting may have occurred, the dog did not follow given that it was untethered.
Maybe Willow was told to 'Stay!' by someone she knew? Was then shortly afterwards tied up by 9:33 witness so couldn't follow.
Other thougets….

Why did she not wear a hat when it was cold? Did she not want her hair to be messed up for some reason or just couldn’t find it? Did she want to be seen more clearly?
Maybe...

And what if the fitbit was thrown in the river?

Not unusual for a someone living in a rural area where people walk dogs near your home and business. A riverside will have lots of people running their dogs off lead. A clearly distressed lone dog would likely be approached than left alone I think.

Fitbit is now part of Google (Alphabet). I assume their servers are in the US?

I agree, they almost certainly don't have access to everything yet. From experience with Google, getting this kind of data when someone has come to harm is complicated work, and takes a long time.

Regarding Fitbit - if the police had cast iron Fitbit data that showed a sudden jump in heart-rate and BP between 9.20 and 9.33 don’t you think they would have shared it with the family at least?

Google has big UK data centres.

Any recent data is on the phone so I suspect they don't need help with that.

I thought it was a bit warmer that week. That's why I was confused when I saw a few people being interviewed wearing wooly hats Right down, as if it was minus temperatures. <modsnip>

No.
The 10 minute window concerns the time from when phone was placed ON the bench and the end of the 930 call. She should have logged out, she did not, something was wrong.
The window remains unchanged.
Returns to bench 9.20am, places phone on bench but failed to log out of team call at 9.30am.
First witness comes along at 9.33am.

Police did not discuss this further and I presume their rationale was to protect witness 933 from social media abuse.

That is my understanding, does not alter the window in any way at all.
Police are concerned for their witnesses.
You've missed my point entirely, but never mind...
If your presumption is correct, I'd say it's backfired massively on them.
All IMO.
