UK - Nurse duped by prankster regarding royal, found dead.

  • #301
These DJs explained exactly what their goal was before they started their prank. I am positive that they had no clue who Jacintha was when they made their phone call, and embarrassing her specifically wasn't their goal.

But was it someone else's goal for them to carry out and they were used as the innocent pawns who would get the blame?

What did you think of the second nurse? Genuine?

Yes, it is against the data protection act for this information to be given out to anyone, even a confirmed relative. When I was in hospital, the staff would only confirm I was a patient to people who telephoned. In this case it is worth noting that the staff were led to believe (even if the phrase the queen was not used), that they were speaking to the head of state and so would be more likely to obey what the caller was saying - again they may have felt that if they upset the head of state their jobs and residency may have been in danger.

This would explain the stress on the nurse, they had good reason to worry about losing their jobs, and possibly even their right to reside in the UK.

These DJs were very happy facing the consequences of their act when they thought the only consequences were good for them. They were happy to not give two hoots about the fact they had broken the law, the fact they had broadcast illegally obtained private medical information, or the fact the nurses would have to face the consequences.
It is only after the suicide that they no longer wish to have to face the consequences of their actions, and it seems this is because it has dawned on them that the consequences might just be bad for them too.

Although I wonder if I am the only one to notice a slight undercurrent of racism. Once it was revealed the nurse was Indian, they were going on about how it was never their intention to do what they did as they assumed the bad accents woudl be picked up. It comes across as blaming the nurse for not being able to differentiate between the accents.

I really hope the DJs face prosecution for broadcastign and obtaining this information, but I have a feeling that because they broke the law for amusement it may be considered acceptable by many.

IMO there should not have been any way for that call to get through even at that time of the day. A previous royal bodyguard has come out and stated that he always had to answer the phone. I have forgotten his name now but you can search for it on google.

IMO there could have been racial discrimination in Jacintha's workplace and that is possibly what her report to management about a month before could have been about and they did nothing except to put the junior and senior on different shifts.

Stating that she might not have realised their "silly accents" is not racial discrimination as far as I am concerned. Several members of her own family in India have been stating that too.

They did no such thing. They inquired about her well being, not what her vital signs were, pulse, blood pressure etc. And then you want to play the race card.........sheeesh. :notgood:

Royal nurse who answered hoax call about Duchess of Cambridge had attempted to kill herself twice before

"The nurse who committed suicide after answering a hoax phone call about the Duchess of Cambridge made two attempts to kill herself last winter and had been prescribed antidepressants.
Jacintha Saldanha, who took her own life days after the call from Australian DJs pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles, attempted to commit suicide last December with an overdose of pills during a family visit to India."

"She survived after being rushed to hospital but tried to commit suicide again just nine days later by apparently jumping from a building."

"Along with the previous suicide attempts, reported in an Indian newspaper, members of Ms Saldanha’s family have revealed that the nurse was so ashamed after taking the hoax call earlier this month that she did not tell her husband or children about it before her death, despite speaking to them by phone several times."

^ I guess that's not surprising, very sad. I hope this takes some of the judgement off the DJ's however, they could not have predicted this tragic outcome.

A little easier to understand now, I guess. I kind of thought this might be the case.

That's the problem with hoaxing-they don't know if the person they are hoaxing has a condition.
I guess this is a risk they are willing to take at somebody's expense.

Well we know the woman was 46 with no apparent history of unstable behavior.

So I also don't understand why people insist she had some major issues-I would think any major mental health issues would have surfaced by 46 years old.

Nobody yet found any evidence that she was not balanced prior to this prank call.
So I really wish people stopped claiming that.

time tells the truth even when you don't want to first believe it, eh?

Stress from the call may be a factor, but I have to wonder if she was experiencing other issues, as well. This incident was probably the tipping point.IMO

Sorry but I said it before and I will say it again she had to have been unbalanced before the call IMO... Some thing was very wrong before she ever put that call thru IMO.

While I think that falling victim to such a widely publicized hoax would be a terrible thing to endure, this nurse must have had some underlying issues to take her life over it.

you all called it.

i too questioned why someone would kill themself over this fairly benign incident (her part of just transferring a call)... but with this latest news, it's making more sense. something else was very wrong with her...

i just wish her family had had the decency to make these latest facts known to the world before the DJs took so much heat and the station made the donation to the family. by keeping quiet what they knew about her emotional history, they not only now come across as deceitful, but as people who don't care that others are unjustly punished for something that really wasn't their fault.

(i would hope this news puts an end to the conspiracy theory posts?)

Yes, I think that's known as convenient omission.

or maybe not. it seems they outright LIED... from blondie's link:

Although Ms Saldanha’s family have previously said she did not have a history of depression, new reports suggest she has been battling the condition since at least December last year.

:furious:

OH lovely....I've actually been scouring the net looking for such contradictions...Thank YOU!!

I guess this is why you should wait for the lawsuit before you hand over the liability payment.....bet the radio station feels duped, but I don't feel too sorry for Austerio, but I do feel for the DJ's - I'm glad this news came in before Christmas.

Exactly. Mental illness isn't that uncommon. Responsible broadcasters do need to think about these things.

Here's one from Keith Vaz's Twitter

@Keith_VazMP Family has "no means at all" #Nurse #Jacintha #Saldanha was the breadwinner. @RadioNational #abcrn #auspol

Really? Well I also found this....

The family home, which she shared with her husband of 19 years, Benedict Barboza, a hospital accountant, and their two children, aged 16 and 14, was 120 miles away to the west in Bristol. Mrs Saladahna would work several intense days of double shifts, staying at hospital-provided accommodation nearby, and then head home to spend time with her family.

Initially the family rented a home, buying their own property in 2005.

More on Mr Vaz

Perhaps he was the influence behind some of the family's 'omissions' ...

They feel duped? Might give them taste of their own medicine, then.

Excuse me? What was I supposed to believe, when the original reports stated she had no history of depression? Are you saying I was supposed to ignore the rules of this site and believe speculation without any evidence instead?

Ya know i do mess with my friends heads, but i know that theres a line, different peoples different lines, funny and humiliation -are two different things.

The DJs i understand, just their job. But the radio station, the long distance call cost them pennies, the advertising $ they make off making a fool of someone, priceless.
And it goes viral-world wide-would you seriously find it funny if you were the fool?

It was and is inevitable that they will play with someone who is not strong enough.
Its russian roullette, but basically its free for the radio station, or maybe they do pay the people they use and abuse, but i have'nt heard that mentioned. JMO of course

You did believe speculation without any evidence.

Specifically, that it was all the big mean DJ's fault.

As far as this woman leaving a note specifically blaming the prank, I wonder who she took a stab at every other time she attempted suicide? The butcher who cheated her on the steak? The waitress who tipped coffee on her and didn't apologise?

This woman was clearly a depressive, very unwell, had been for some time, was working with the so-called "medical profession" and no one even noticed???

Now we hear rumblings about the way the hospital treated her, maybe her husband, maybe she was half worked to death?

But no, it's the DJ's fault....

Tell me, have you ever watched/laughed at any of the following -

Ellen, David Letterman, Candid Camera, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Funniest Home Videos, Punk'd, Honey Boo Boo, Housewives of xyz shows, Maury, Howard Stern?

If you have, you are being hypocritical.

They all operate on exactly the same premise...A JOKE at someone else's expense.

Suicide hasn't been illegal in the UK since 1961 and I am reeling at the harshness of your post :what:
Many bad work situations have led to suicides and this nurse hung herself in her staff accommodation, not at home :(

They were just doing their jobs as instructed, as we all do, every day.

They do not deserve the sort of horrific bullying they are recieving in the press, or on various forums. They are young, innocent, and absolutely gutted at this nurse's actions. Do people wish them dead too?

Do you call that "harsh"? :waitasec:

Now the hysteria has died down and some facts are coming through about the Nurse and those surrounding her, her mental health history, her multiple suicide attempts, her treatment at the hands of her employers and her own family?

I put it to you that a woman that unwell had a moral obligation not to be in charge of the health of other people, yet she continued working and working shifts which are the most punishing of all on those with fragile mental conditions.

There is plenty of blame to go around, and none of it belongs to these young people who were just doing a job.
