I actually saw them arrive this morning as I was in Manchester for a conference - there were police literally everywhere.
It does two things, stops anyone taking a pop at Cashman or someone trying to get him out of that van.
Either way his life is going to be hell going forward.

Cashman 'lay in wait' for Joseph Nee with two guns​

Mr McLachlan explains to the jury who is who in the courtroom, and talks them through the bundles of documents they have in front of them.
He begins his opening, outlining the prosecution case. Mr McLachlan says that Cashman "lay in wait" for Joseph Nee in the late evening of August 22 last year while armed with two loaded firearms, a self-loading pistol and a revolver.
Nee - who was "without doubt the intended target" - was watching the football at the home of a man called Timothy Naylor on Finch Lane in Dovecot, with Liverpool FC playing Manchester United at Old Trafford that night.
The game finished 2-1 to the hosts, "unlike the other day", and finished shortly before 10pm.
Soon afterwards, Nee and another man - Paul Abraham - left the address, turning onto Kingsheath Avenue.
There is a pause as Mr McLachlan prepares to show the jury some CCTV images.

There are a few technical issues related to displaying the CCTV on the court TV system. Justice Yip asks the jury to step out of court while it is resolved.

The issues appear to have been sorted and the jury are ushered back into court.
They are told the CCTV footage allegedly shows Cashman then approaching the two men, running after them from behind.
Mr McLachlan says: "[Cashman] does not accept that that was him."
The footage, taken from a camera at the back of a house is said to show Cashman then running at the two men.
Mr McLachlan says: "He does not accept that that was him. The man running at them meant business, and it wasn’t good business.”
The clip is played to the jury. It shows footage of Joseph Nee and Paul Abraham walking from the direction of Finch Lane, left onto Kinsgheath Avenue. The gunman runs across Finch Lane onto Kingsheath Avenue. The gunman is marked with a blue marker with the initials 'TC'.
Three loud bangs can be heard. Nee stumbles to the floor as Abraham flees. The gunman points the gun at him from close range, but Nee is able to get up and run.

Mr McLachlan says: "“This was the start of the incident on that night. The prosecution say you heard there three distinct shots fired at Joseph Nee from a 9mm self-loading pistol.”
One of the bullets fired hit Nee in the midriff as Mr Abraham "ran away in fear for his life" back towards Finch Lane.
Nee meanwhile “stumbled as Cashman approached him, stood over him and tried to fire again”.
“For some reason, possibly that the pistol malfunctioned, Thomas Cashman was unable to complete his task.
“His task, the prosecution say was to kill Joseph Nee.
“Joseph Nee was able to get up and run off.”

Cashman "relentless" in pursuit of Nee​

Cheryl Korbel had heard bangs from the gunshots at her home nearby on Kingsheath Avenue and went to her front door to "see what was going on".
Nee "must have seen the light coming from her front door opening and made a dash towards the door", while still being chased.
Mr McLachlan says Cashman “was not going to give up” and was "relentless in his pursuit" - firing again at Nee, this time using a revolver.
This shot missed the intended target and went through the front door, passing through Cheryl's right hand then hitting Olivia Pratt-Korbel in the chest.

“Did that stop the gunman, the fact that a shot had been fired at the door?
“The answer is no.
“The prosecution say Thomas Cashman did not stop in his pursuit of Joseph Nee.”
By now, Nee had managed to get inside the house.
The gunman "managed to get his arm around the door" and shot again, with this bullet ending up lodged in the door frame, before fleeing.
Nee "managed to stumble out" of the property and was picked up by a car on Kingsheath Avenue and taken to Whiston Hospital "by his mates".

Ruthless pursuit​

Armed police arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and found Olivia heavily bleeding on the stairs with her mum by her side.
She was rushed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 11.15pm.
Mr McLachlan says: "This is what this case is all about.
“This is serious business, as you will appreciate.
"It is about the ruthless pursuit by Thomas Cashman to shoot Joseph Nee at all costs without any consideration for anyone else in the community.
"Such was the planning and ruthless nature of this attack that Thomas Cashman went armed and was in possession of two loaded firearms.
"When in all likelihood one of them failed, he simply turned to the other one to execute - literally - his plan.
"Thomas Cashman’s actions resulted in Joseph Nee being injured, Cheryl Korbel being injured and, most tragically of all, Olivia Pratt-Korbel being killed.
"It is the prosecution case, but we accept it will be a matter for you and you alone to determine, whether Thomas Cashman was the gunman in this case…
"Are you sure, on the evidence, that Thomas Cashman was the gunman in this case?”

Mr Cashman, 34, claims he was not the gunman.

Opening the trial at Manchester Crown Court, David McLachlan KC said the man chasing Nee "meant business, and it wasn't good business".

On the night of the shooting, Mr Cashman had two loaded firearms in his possession and was waiting for Nee, who was "without doubt the intended target",

Nee had been watching a football match at the home of another man, Timothy Naylor,

when Nee left the house Mr Cashman ran behind him and fired three shots from a self-loading pistol, one of which struck Nee in the midriff.
Nee stumbled and Mr Cashman stood over him and tried to fire again but, possibly because the pistol malfunctioned, he was unable to complete his "task" and kill Nee,

that was when Nee ran away from Mr Cashman and made for Ms Korbel's house.

Olivia's mother, Cheryl Korbel, opened her door after hearing noise outside and, Nee "made a dash" towards her house, with Mr Cashman in pursuit.

Mr Cashman fired at Nee from the revolver, and hit the front door of the family home

a fourth shot likely "passed through the door, then passed through Cheryl Korbel's right hand

"The bullet then went into the chest of Cheryl Korbel's daughter Olivia Pratt-Korbel."

Nee managed to get inside the house before Mr Cashman allegedly fired again into the doorframe, after getting his arm around the door, before running away.

The jury of 10 men and two women were told the main issue in the case would be whether they were sure Mr Cashman was the gunman.

The trial is expected to last about four weeks.

Well, that was a very compelling prosecution opener (imo).

I live locally and whats interesting is all the homes he visited that day, they are all within easy walking distance. With the exception of his home on Grenadier, they are all 5min max jog from each other. His home is still only 10min jog from the main area of activity that day. Its hard to appreciate that from all the road names.

I think it said the other bloke came back and took them. I feel this woman's evidence will be key. I wouldn't be surprised if she has to go in some kind of witness protection after this. As she said to police, he placed her in a horrendous situation.

Are we allowed to discuss Joseph Nee's behaviour on here?
