I didn't suggest that they were "hardened killing machines" but you don't find many pacifists in the armed forces.
What I would say is that a large amount of people join the forces for the sake of a stable, guaranteed career. Others do it to escape bad home lives, or areas they are from which have high levels of unemployment. People who are in care often join as its like an extension of what they know - being told what to do, being looked after, decisions made for them. I think there are very few people who join up because they want to kill people. And when my husband was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, I can tell you that not a single one of his colleagues wanted to go. They knew the chances of getting killed or maimed were very high (Afghanistan was horrific the time they were there) and none of them were 'up for it'.
