Wow! Is the 'luggage storage' something like lockers? Because those were removed from American airports after 9-11-2001.

Or does this mean her luggage was checked, and then she never boarded the plane? Which makes more sense- how else would they know / care she didn't take the plane she had a ticket for? I have bought cheaper round-trip tix intending to only use it one way and no one from the airline has ever even contacted me to ask where I was after 'missing' the return flight.Because in the airline's eyes, as long as my luggage was not on the plane- no one cares.

The latest link I shared states that she went through the security check but ended up abandoning her bag incl. her passport, coat and mobile phone afterwards :( Sorry for the possible misunderstanding due to the fact that English was just my 2nd foreign language at school toooo many years ago [emoji23]

The previous was just my speculation, Meanmaryjean, I’m afraid. However, it seems that there is a “manned” baggage service at EDI airport - an actual person serving people who wish to store their luggage. However, that “information” is completely useless now.

She left the airport without her jacket, passport, back bag and mobile phone [emoji22] It is highly concerning indeed.

Any ideas where to find her? Any possible “self harming spots” (with the possible religious connections) in EDI?

I do pray that she has found a safe spot to vent off but the reality does not look too good at all [emoji22][emoji22][emoji22]

Is it at all feasible that she could have taken a bus further to the countryside without anyone knowing about the situation?

Wow, LemonMint, if English is just a second language you learned at school, you have retained it perfectly. I think we have a couple of Finnish cases on here, I'll look them up.

Hauska tavata, and welcome to all new members!!!

It's possible she could have caught a bus elsewhere. The main bus company (Lothian Buses) have multiple cctv cameras on all buses but I don't know about the smaller out of town bus companies. The main bus station for destinations further afield is very close to where she got off the tram but it's well covered by cctv so they'd have a further sighting if she'd gone there. She'd gotten the bus from Easter Road that morning and was last seen pointed in that direction and not far away. The connecting road (London Road) is a main bus route that out of town services heading to East Lothian use.

As for suicide spots - Holyrood Park/Arthur's Seat is the main one whereby she wouldn't necessarily have been found by now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holyrood_Park

Hauska tavata (despite of these circumstances), too, CoverMeCagney [emoji4] Thank you for your compliment, too.

I’ve been reading WS’s “missing people” section...well, at least 2 years now (US, UK, Australian, European cases) but Riina’s case finally gave me the courage to join in the discussion.

I actually think that the only Finnish case discussed in WS (in addition to Riina’s now) was the unfortunate one of Nela’s [emoji22]

Thank you very much for your local insight, Jiminy ❤️

Are there any voluntary based Missing people organizations in Scotland, by the way? I mean those ones which would act up despite of the request of the authorities (we don’t have those ones in Finland , unfortunately, but “Missing People Sweden” is a perfect example of an organization that acts up immediately in co-operation with the authorities).

I'm not aware of any organisations like that, sadly.

I think Edinburgh police has done an amazing job so far, btw [emoji106]

I’m afraid it’s going to be just a recovery mission soon though (thinking about the weather, too) [emoji22] I do hope I’m mistaken and that against all odds she’s safe & sound somewhere.

I'm holding out hope she is on some sort of pilgrimage - walking about from church to church maybe? I know that might be a stretch, but I want her to be safe and well.

She left her jacket?? I wonder if they have thoroughly checked the airport for her.

I haven't spotted the information on 3-4 days in Edinburgh myself. Could you provide a link, please?
TIA :)

This is convoluted, but my wife's brother is her cousin's partner. I'm a Briton, living in Finland for the last twenty years. This is part of what we now know.

I don't know if this could be relevant but her father moved to Paris and had very little to do with her whilst she was growing up. Often Riina would stay at her cousins, the Sodergrens, not to be confused with her own name of Sjogren.

When you consider the way Riina has acted and her family’s notion that she wasn’t quite herself at Christmas time, it'd be possible (though not certain, of course) that Riina is suffering from persecutory delusions and is trying to escape and/or hide from her imaginary persecutor(s) and has indeed wanted to disappear.

She traveled to London and a day after that continued to Edinburgh. In Edinburgh she went to the airport very early in the morning (4.55 am has been mentioned in the papers) and bought a flight ticket to Amsterdam only a day after she had arrived to Edinburgh. Then she went through the security check but opted out of the flight and left her belongings at the airport. After that she walked quite a bit from the airport until she took the tram from Gogar to York Place where she went off the grid.

Hasty travelling from place to place, missing the flight but leaving her belongings including her coat and all the electrical devices and not taking the tram at airport but instead walking to another tram stop might all indicate Riina's desire to distract the imaginary followers/persecutors from her trail. In her twisted mind Riina’d have thought that she needed to leave the laptop and mobile phone because they could be used to follow and monitor her. She’d have also reasoned that she might not be so easily recognized if she didn’t have her overcoat on her. Another “diversion” could’ve been not to take the tram from the “obvious place” at the airport but instead from another stop. The very early arrival at the airport could indicate insomnia that is prevalent in psychotic disorders.

It might be helpful if Riina’s family could check her home in Finland. Many times people that experience persecutory delusions, “arrange” their homes in an effort to protect themselves from their persecutors, i.e. they build “safe places” by the way of barricading the rooms with furniture or throw way objects they deem suspicious etc. Riina’s neighbours may have noticed a change in her behavior, too, depending of course how well they’d have known and how often seen her. Also, it’s been told that Riina hasn’t been working recently but it hasn’t been told why. It’d be possible the she has quit her job due to her deteriorating mental health, meaning the increasing delusions. How about her contacts with her friends - I haven’t seen any of them mention in any interviews that they’d have met or spoken with her recently.

Disclaimer: I don’t mean to offend anyone with the preceding speculation. I’m a newbie here, so if this post is out of line on this forum, I apologize and understand if it get’s deleted.

Excellent post, welcome to Ws Teckel!
Your scenario reminds me of another baffling missing tourist case, that of Lars Mittank, fwiw.

Hmm, interesting post.

Do you know about the Swedish woman who disappeared from Prestwick Airport back in 2005? She disappeared under similar circumstances and was found dead a short while later.

She appears to have had a stalker - or thought she had. I was talking to her friend 2 years ago, she said she had told her she was being followed.

The Swedish woman had the exact same name as an investigative journalist who had exposed CIA flights in and out of Prestwick.

Taskforce88 - Could you please provide the link to this case of the Swedish woman? I would like to read full details and I can't find it. Thank you!

I couldn't find a WS link, but did find google helpful when entering name and Prestwick Airport.

It sounds so similar.... and I am trying to understand what would make someone leave their belongings behind and just exit?
Something IMOO that might either be fear - fear of being stalked? Or having been abducted? Nothing makes any sense. :(
