Our 14yr old was watching the news yesterday and she said to me “mum, you always told me if I am lost or in any danger that if I see someone in uniform ask them for help”.

I think this is what’s shocked the nation the most. A serving police officer, a person of trust has allegedly done this. I have too told my children if they are lost/scared to find a police officer.

Competence and Compellability | The Crown Prosecution Service
The offences for which you can be compelled (as a spouse) are fairly specific really, if there’s any indication of joint charges also I think then the spouse is considered neither competent or able to be compelled to give evidence on those matters any way. Useful guidance Competence and Compellability | The Crown Prosecution Service no I don’t think she would be compelled unless it involves the specific types of offending detailed here (DV / sexual offences against under 16s etc). I’ve seen a spouse compelled to attend to give evidence & hostile witness provisions used in court before (in a DV case where the victim (who had been a victim of multiple DV incidents) didn’t want to give evidence but that’s not apparent here that we know of). One would think if he’s gone home and coughed to the wife about what he’s done / appeared erratic or dodgy etc she’s perhaps shared what she knows with police when she’s been nicked as she’s out on bail which if they had clear evidence of her involvement & assistance I'm unsure would be the case ... unsure if section 9 written statements differ when it reaches court (where they use the written statement and don’t call witness) with spouses, will have to check that one out...
So as long as it was not something he told her privately, she would have to testify? For example, if she heard or saw him do something nefarious as opposed to him asking her to lie about his whereabouts.

We are closing up shop for the night again. To our UK friends, please don't take this night closure personally ... we have to do the same at times with very fast-moving threads in the US as well.

Use the Report feature to ask the morning Moderators to reopen the thread for you.

Good Night everyone !!

I agree, a position of trust and the allegations that he exposed himself a few days before - they should have dealt with it properly. I wonder if whoever dealt with it tried to brush it under the carpet. I have always told our daughter that if she is ever lost or worried and in any danger, to look for someone in uniform - police, security guards etc.

And that still is the safest thing to do, imo. But also tell them to trust their gut, so if it doesn’t feel right at the time they can choose a different course of action. Or ask a passerby to join the conversation with the officer.

Did anyone else expect him to be charged with rape as well? Is this because they do not have enough evidence to charge?

I know a judge at Southwark and when I was talking to him he said he assumed Old Bailey due to the seriousness.

Normally it would be the Crown Court for where the offences were committed (not sure how this is decided if there are several offences in different locations, and whether residence of the accused is relevant)

But IMO it's bound to be the Old Bailey because he was a serving Met Officer at the time

It’s so sad and I hope to goodness the delay in bus cam footage wouldn’t have made any difference. Just to point out that route i think is operated by Arriva under licence from TfL, not TfL direct like most bus routes in LDN. If the footage wasn’t handed over because they weren’t in the office over the weekend (and didn’t go in/log in from home nowadays to check!), questions should be raised over why it wasn’t prioritised. But that is just speculation as it may have taken them the weekend to pinpoint and track the relevant footage JMO
All bus routes in London are run by private companies contracted to TfL, the last route directly operated by TfL was transferred to private some years ago, but TfL do retain an operating company on case of any contract defaults. Arriva is just one of many bus companies. They operate 80+ routes with over 1500+ buses. As I posted some time ago it's not difficult to request cctv footage but it's not easy either, the request has to meet various legislation and go through various sign off, and it can take a few days for this and a few days for the bus company to narrow down the particular bus to obtain the footage, so unfortunately delays are built in but not always the bus company's fault.
Not sure about Arriva as I don't deal with them directly but other bus companies have a dedicated contact, usually in the legal dept, who LE will contact with requests for footage. The companies I deal with are all working from home still and I do have out of hours contacts should I need them. (But like I said, can't speak for Arriva)

Out or curiosity, now that EC has been released... what is the general protocol there if anyone knows? She obviously can't return home, would they arrange accommodation for her?

She'll probably have to stay with family or friends.

Social Services are responsible for arrangements for children. This is normal procedure, various arrangements are possible, and will be kept strictly private.

I was wondering if EC was scared of her husband. At the moment she's not been charged with any offence, so it is possible she is another victim

Anybody have any opinions about when a trial will take place? Will they fast track this or could it be as late as next year?

Unsurprising to see that WC began his career with the Met in Bromley, as it's the most convenient borough for someone commuting from Kent.

It's worth highlighting that the Indecent Exposure incident on Feb 28th, reportedly at Swanley McDonald's, falls under that borough. (it's very much where Kent meets London)

I wonder whether the referral to the IOPC is merely the Met covering themselves as it would've been response officers at Bromley who attended, and up until recently he was... a response officer at Bromley.

Sadly, this also seems to suggest that I share acquaintances with him.

I'm not sure what it says about him that he committed this offence in an area where he had - up until recently - worked.
He worked as a traffic officer

Westminster Mags operates 0900-1300 on a Saturday. The statement yesterday said the appearance would be in the “morning”. Probably will be via video link IMO.

I understand why the need but it's not 'goodnight' for us.
It's during our UK day time that you're closing threads. :(

Mods have to get some sleep at some point. It's very early in the morning in the US, too.

I don't think that changes, as the truth is that a person in uniform, a worker employed by wherever we are, or a mum with children will be safest and most likely to help. It's still incredibly unlikely that a uniformed officer would commit these acts and we have to remember WC was most likely off duty and not in uniform when this took place.

might be an idea to have some UK mods , just a thought :) it would mean a bigger membership for them, this is a great board the best for internet sleuthing imo

I'm not sure what I expected but i did think this was a sexually motivated attack.
