Sarah Wellgreen: Missing mum 'murdered by former partner'

A missing mother-of-five was murdered by her former partner in a "calculated manner designed to avoid detection", a court has heard.

Ben Lacomba, 38, of Bazes Shaw, New Ash Green, Kent, is on trial accused of murdering 46-year-old Sarah Wellgreen.

She has not been seen since she disappeared from the home she shared with Mr Lacomba on 10 October 2018.

"She was not abducted and murdered by a stranger," prosecutor Alison Morgan QC told Woolwich Crown Court.

The jury will be taken on a visit to Bazes Shaw in New Ash Green tomorrow (October 2).

They will be shown key locations in the case.

All 12 jurors will then be taken down the country lane route in two mini buses that the prosecution allege Mr Lacomba drove along in the early hours of October 10.

They will be directed to the various CCTV points that captured a vehicle heading in and out of Bazes Shaw.

Surely if the prosecution had DNA evidence from within BL's vehicle, she would have said so in her opening remarks? If there *was no* DNA, then how could that be so? I mean like blood evidence, or proof of cadaver.. or proof that she'd been in the trunk or something.

The Opening address usually provides a basic overview of the case.
The specific details, such as DNA, will be supplied later, when the forensic guys give evidence.

Seeing the first day of the prosecution case in black and white, it looks like a compelling charge based on strong circumstantial evidence?

As others have said, cant believe both the phones were allowed to be dumped.

I agree that the ringing Mum first rather than SW is damning, but for me its the lies about being in bed asleep all Night when its clearly established imo that he was out, probably disposing of body....the cctv footage..the 2hr gap until reappearing on cctv..the mud on car , the child statement about waking up to neither parent in house etc.

No body, no DNA or forensics in car have been stated, not guilty plea....interesting to see how Today pans out.

Eta...Alyce points out DNA etc may usually be presented later in case.

Ok, so looking at that route makes me think that poor Sarah could have ended up in the landfill. One thing we learned from the Corrie case was that bodies are extremely difficult to find in landfill - and if BL had been planning this for a while I'm sure he'd have been very interested in such a high profile missing person case. JMO but there looks to be many, many places along that route, or closer to home, to dispose of a body so why go that far? Also, I think the disposal site says a lot about the feelings the killer has towards the victim - and I think he saw Sarah as trash, rubbish etc so landfill would appeal I think as a kind of final "f*** you"
JMO etc

Is there a map of the route ?

While I agree that any DNA evidence would be presented later in the case, I believe the prosecutor would have stated something during opening remarks that would indicate their presence, ie just by mentioning it without proving it. ie 'S's DNA was found in his trunk', or 'cadaver dogs noted an area inside the trunk', or something to that effect, without going into any more detail. Methinks there may not end up being any DNA evidence, but just my guess based on opening statement.

Ben Lacomba trial: Jury visits Sarah Wellgreen’s home where she spent her ‘last moments alive’

They were taken along the route where the prosecution believe the taxi driver's vehicle was captured driving along in the dead of night

The jury in the trial of the man accused of murdering mum-of-five Sarah Wellgreen visited the home where it is alleged she spent her last moments alive.

The eight men and four women arrived in New Ash Green near Sevenoaks today (October 2) accompanied by Judge Christopher Kinch QC and lawyers for the prosecution and defence.

It also included the jurors tracing the isolated route the beautician's former partner Ben Lacomba is alleged to have driven in his taxi in the early hours of October 10 last year after killing her and to dispose of her body.

Continued:

The jurors, counsel, judge, court clerk and ushers arrived in two blacked out minibuses shortly before 11am, escorted by Kent Police vehicles.

Lacomba was not required to attend.

There was a heavy police presence as they pulled into Bazes Shaw, made up of small rows of terraced houses and detached bungalows.

Led by prosecutor Alison Morgan QC, the party were told that Sarah's vehicle was parked there on the night of October 9 and 10.

She then pointed out the house and where the CCTV system, described in court as elaborate and operating by infrared light, ran along the side brick wall.

It is alleged Lacomba turned it off, although it was faulty and not recording, at 00.12am on October 10.

The jury was then taken on foot to a neighbour's property, number 23, where Lacomba is said to have enquired about its security cameras and the area covered by them in the summer of last year.

At the time there was a camera at the front of the house and one at the rear and both locations were pointed out by Miss Morgan.

She explained the front camera had provided the footage of Bazes Shaw seen in court during the opening.

The group then stood outside number 22 itself but were not shown inside the property, this view having already been provided in photographs as part of their jury bundles.

Miss Morgan said: "There are two routes from outside number 22 and we will walk both those routes through to car park two."

This is the car park where Lacomba, say the prosecution, "unusually and quite deliberately" chose to park his taxi on the night of October 9.

The first route led past the rear of number 23.

Having reached car park two, the jury were then shown the second route that could have allegedly been taken by Lacomba from his house and which went around the front of number 23.

Once in car park two for a second time, Miss Morgan said: "This is where the defendant arrived back home on the afternoon of October 9 at 5.08pm and where his car was the following morning on October 10."

The view then headed to the outside of number 32, which looks across the car park with a path running past the property and up to Lacomba's house.

It is alleged that Lacomba's return to Bazes Shaw at 4.52am, having disposed of Sarah's body, was captured by cameras showing the flash of his vehicle lights as it was locked.

The jury was then taken along another path leading from outside number 22, past the two terraced properties in his row and to a detached bungalow.

They were then invited to look down an adjacent alleyway, overgrown and strewn with litter, as Miss Morgan explained: "This alleyway leads from here, down the back gardens further down into Bazes Shaw.

"It runs in part parallel to the sports field on the other side. There is no street lighting down there."

The group then headed along a pathway running towards Church Road and adjacent to number 20, and which linked up to a path running along the rear, including number 22.

The party were then led around a block of terraced houses numbered 15 to 18 and back to the car park directly adjacent to Lacomba and Sarah's home.

Jurors were shown the shed built over the rear fence and gate of the property, as it was in October last year, and how the hedge along the side wall runs lower as it reached the house itself and a conservatory.

Having then walked back to the entrance of Bazes Shaw, Judge Kinch asked the jury to write down any questions they had at this stage of the view.

One note asked about Lacomba's height and the jury was told they would hear this, as well as other dimensions such as fence height, at a later stage in proceedings.

After 20 minutes of viewing the scene, the jurors were then taken back onto the minibuses to trace the route Lacomba is alleged to have driven in the early hours of the morning.

Miss Morgan told them: "We will stop at each of the eight CCTV cameras which the prosecution say catch the defendant's car on that route in both directions, so out and in.

"At each stop we will get off the bus and the name of the location will be announced."
