Anyone with information on Sophie’s whereabouts is urged to contact police on 101. We would also ask Sophie to call this number if she sees this appeal.

Worryingly, two rivers run alongside the areas that are currently being searched in the hunt for Sophie.

There’s an interesting possible sighting of her riding a bike in Somerset, telling people she was hitch hiking through the Country.

Why isn't this getting the same level of attention as missing Alice Byrne in Edinburgh?

Why isn't this getting the same level of attention as missing Alice Byrne in Edinburgh?

You made me wonder the same thing. Then I wondered if the real question is why is Alice Byrne getting media attention at all? There are many missing people, four total from Edinburgh around the same time, the other three are not on BBC news today. I Media information perhaps ahead of what is being released to public?

Why isn't this getting the same level of attention as missing Alice Byrne in Edinburgh?

It's a great question, and you could probably write a doctoral thesis about it in a more general sense. There are many factors, but for me the most important are these:

1. It depends on who you know. If your social circle, and wider FOAF and professional circles, consists of people who are young, dynamic, highly-educated and articulate, then you are half way there. These are people who already campaign on other issues. These are people who belong to pressure groups. They know how to start a media campaign and how to keep it going. They've got the social skills and intellectual ability, and in many cases they have the experience and professional skills (and contacts). I suspect that Alice mixed in these circles but Sophie didn't.

2. It depends on the demographics of the area. If the area has large numbers of the sort of people I am talking about above, then you stand a better chance of attention. Edinburgh does. Carlisle doesn't.

3. It depends on how much people can empathise. Alice was out for a stroll on New Year's Day. There were thousands in Edinburgh alone doing just that, and I think Alice's disappearance will hit home particularly hard with them. I don't think we have any idea of what Sophie was doing at the time of her disappearance.

OK, so I have made some sweeping generalisations and thrown in a little bit of cynicism. As I say, there are many other factors, and other people will have their own ideas. Sophie's disappearance deserves to have the same level of attention as Alice's.

You’ve made some very good points, which I agree with. It’s a shame really because a life is a life, and what you’ve described is a type of inequality (and the inverse, privilege) that ultimately leaves some lives out in the cold.

Police are continuing to appeal for help to trace missing woman Sophie Burns - and have confirmed they have a number of new leads.

But for now, Sophie's mum Pauline just wants to know she is okay. So far, Cumbria Police have said there has been no sightings of the missing Carlisle woman.

Sophie, 28, has been missing since Sunday, December 12 last year from the Dalton Crescent area as police are still appealing for any information to help find her.

Mum Pauline told CumbriaLive: "You don't think it will happen to you, I have found out the there is at least 200,000 people missing we have no leads. At the weekend we went out with drones looking for her but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

"Sophie is really bright and talented artist this is so out of character for her."

She said: "We're really close, I thought she would have made contact on Christmas day but she didn't. All I want is to know she is okay."

In a message directly to Sophie her mum said: "Just let me know you're all right, I only want you to be happy."
