Deceased/Not Found UK - Steven Clark, 23, disabled, Saltburn, Dec 1992

The Cleveland Police site says this:

"Officers are appealing for information from anyone who knew Steven at the time of his disappearance, or who may have information that could help with the case. They also want to hear from anyone who may have seen something on the weekend of his disappearance, which was Christmas bank holiday weekend, who maybe didn’t feel that it was relevant at the time.

Key to the investigation is establishing what Steven’s relationships were like with the people that he knew, at the time of his disappearance"
What? Why make this appeal now; why didn't they make it in 1993? It looks as though the investigation was poorly conducted at the time (a common finding when it comes to unsolved cases) and they're playing catch-up 27 years later.

I wonder would they have used ground penetrating equipment to determine if anyone was buried there before digging?
Would digging up a garden be the norm?
Do you think there has been a confession? I haven’t anything of the parents & usually the media would be photographing them.

I would be surprised if the had not done some checking prior to digging it up.They could put a camera down to have a look .
Given the number of police investigation vans and cars which I assumed were detectives, I do get the feeling they know there is something of interest there. In these circumstances I think digging up the garden is the norm especially if they have been given tips from the public .We do not know what information was in the anonymous letter.
There were pictures of the parents just after the news they had been arrested was announced.
I imagine they are now not going out and so press would not be able to take anymore photos.

I think one or other might confess if they know the game is up.

I don't think I've seen a situation before where they set up a tent and then find a body. But then they just take the tent down and only later announce they found a body. Do you think there is much chance they found something of significance and just haven't announced it yet? It seems like the info always gets leaked out somehow even before an official announcement.

I could of course be totally wrong. But I'm guessing they didn't find anyone.

I cannot remember a case where they were looking for a body and did not report it being found.
There again ,I cannot remember when the Mail have been reporting about a garden being dug up and have not issued daily stories and pictures of the various police vehicles and officers.
Usually there have been aerial photos.

Perhaps they have found something and for reasons unknown to us ,wish it to be kept secret .

The police cannot find human remains and hide them at will. The Coroner has to be informed, and the remains have to be treated with dignity. The Coroner decides what will happen with the remains, transport to a funeral home or a post-mortem examination by means of an autopsy.

LE may have taken other items or debris from the home, but recognizable human remains were not among them.

If they found remains all that could have happened, but the press asked not to publish any thing.

The detective leading the case of missing Steven Clark has received significant information into the inquiry, as a potential witness has come forward to report seeing Steven on Monday 28th December 1992 in the late afternoon.

The woman was out with her family and has reported that Steven passed them as they were walking on the High Street towards Marske square. The man, believed to be Steven, was walking in the opposite direction towards The Ship Inn and it hadn’t yet got dark.

After seeing the appeal for Steven in 1992 the woman confirmed with her family that it was Steven who they had seen, but did not think it was relevant to the case at that time.

Detective Chief Inspector Shaun Page said: “This is an important development for us because we know that it got dark that day at around 3:45pm and this potential sighting puts Steven in Marske before that time."

They didn't think a sighting of a missing person around the time he reportedly went missing was relevant?!

Astonishing....

Could it be that her sighting was before 3pm ? so the witness believed that her evidence was not relevant/important, because Mrs C has confirmed that she was with Steven at 3pm.

But then again - who knows - most people would report it anyway surely

Why would someone consider that info irrelevant at the time and suddenly relevant now? How do you clearly remember the details of an event so many years later that you didn't believe was actually relevant info at the time? I certainly struggle to remember things that weren't relevant on the average day nearly 30 years ago. I can't remember boring average days of no significance let alone the people I saw on the street. Maybe my memory is just terrible?

I cannot find Marske Square on google maps, so I have used Marske Post Office as a marker as it looks as though that is the central part of the High Street.

So if the witness is walking along the High St towards the *square* and Steven is heading in the direction of the Ship Inn, then Steven must have been walking towards his home.
