UK - Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall 'felled overnight', Sept 2023 *arrests*

Apparently they will only have to serve up to 40% of the sentence :( Historically I've always believed that people had to serve at least 50% of a prison sentence, but this must have changed (or I am mistaken).

"Both to blame

The judge said
she didn't believe Carruthers was drunk
and did not believe Graham simply went along with it.

'I'm quite sure
that you are both equally culpable for the felling of the tree
and the damage to the wall'."

I would have liked to have seen the 60% portion doing community service. Only seems fair to me if the appropriate sentence was 4 years and 3 months but they get to go home after 40%. JMO

"It felt like a murder trial."

I agree, it felt like a murder.
I actually think they will have to watch their backs when they get out of prison. Historical monuments and figures mean more to people in the UK than they do to us in North America with our much shorter history, in my opinion. I'm not saying someone will murder them, but they might get a couple of beatings.

The stump of the beloved Sycamore Gap tree could be damaged by tributes left by visitors, the National Trust said.

The charity, which along with the Northumberland National Park Authority looks after the site by Hadrian's Wall, has added a protective cage of wire mesh netting to the fenced-off stump to protect it.

First Sycamore Gap tree 'offsprings' to be planted

The first saplings grown from the illegally felled Sycamore Gap tree will be planted this weekend.

Five saplings will be installed in Coventry, Staffordshire, Berkshire, Cambridge and Strabane on Saturday, the National Trust said.

Next week more plantings will take place in Hexham, Leeds and Sunderland.

It is part of the charity's Trees of Hope initiative which received nearly 500 applications for the 49 saplings grown from the seeds rescued from the tree, which stood in a dip next to Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland until two men from Cumbria cut it down one night in September 2023 🌳🌳🌳🌳
