UK- Two cases of monkeypox virus found in Wales, June 2021

The World Health Organization’s decision to declare mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years may seem like déjà vu — but there are key differences between the strain that’s causing international concern now and the one that spread in 2022.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection characterized by painful lesions. It’s spread by direct contact with an infected person, animal or contaminated items like clothing or bedding.

The virus is classified into two distinct groups: clade I and clade II.

Clade II was responsible for the 2022 outbreak, which has led to around 100,000 cases worldwide...

As concerns mount about a type of mpox spreading across Africa that’s believed to cause more serious illness, infectious disease experts expressed cautious optimism that this branch of the virus would not spread as broadly in the U.S. or cause health impacts as severe.

The risk of this subtype of mpox to the U.S. could be mitigated by a number of factors, including immunity from vaccination and previous infection from the outbreak of a different variant that began in 2022; the lack of viral circulation in wild animals; and better health care access, living standards and public health.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization reinstated the status of mpox (formerly monkeypox) as a public health emergency of international concern. This was in response to a large ongoing outbreak of clade I of mpox — a clade is an evolutionary branch — in the Democratic Republic of Congo, or DRC, that has spread to other African nations...

''U.S. health officials confirmed on Saturday the first case of a more severe strain of mpox that infected an individual who recently traveled to Africa.

California health authorities identified the first known case of clade I mpox in the U.S. through laboratory testing. The person was treated in San Mateo County, according to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The individual is at home and recovering. ''

''The U.S. became the sixth nation outside of Africa to confirm the strain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Travel-related cases have been detected in India, Germany, Sweden, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
“The risk of clade I mpox to the general public in the U.S. remains low,” CDC wrote. ''

''The agency says the travel-related case is associated with an ongoing outbreak of what’s known as clade 1 mpox in central and eastern Africa.''

''It says the person sought medical care for mpox symptoms in Canada shortly after their return and is isolating, with contact tracing being conducted.''
