Mr Whitelock, defending himself, admits manslaughter of Ms Buckney in August 2022 on the grounds of diminished responsibility, but denies murder.

He walked out of the witness box at Swansea Crown Court when quizzed about his killing two men in 2000, including his own brother.

[...]

He told the court: "Twenty-odd years ago I killed someone in a fight.

"People go on about a history of violence, I have no history of violence apart from that. I served a long sentence and kept my head down.

[...]

On walking out of the witness box he told the judge, Mr Justice Griffiths: "I am not answering any more questions.

"You can go on the medical evidence. I can’t defend myself. You say it’s a fair trial? Get me out."

From 14th Nov

[...] Ms Buckney had paid the defendant to perform odd jobs around her home.

Yesterday the court was told Ms Buckney's family were concerned about him working for her, but she had told them: "Everyone deserves a second chance."

The 999 call to police was made by Mr Whitelock's neighbour, Jeffrey Llewellyn, on the morning of 23 August.

He had become increasingly concerned about Mr Whitelock's erratic behaviour in the days before Ms Buckney's death.

Mr Llewellyn told the operator in the recording: "He's just told me he's killed her."

As he is speaking to the call handler, Mr Whitelock can be seen on CCTV walking about outside the flats on Tan y Coed Road in Clydach.

The jury saw Mr Whitelock dressed only in boxer shorts covered in blood shouting up to a clearly shock Mr Llewellyn in his flat.

It took the jury less than half an hour to find Whitelock guilty of murder. He had defended himself during the trial but the judge, Mr Justice Griffiths, asked him if he wanted a barrister for his sentencing hearing.

Whitelock replied “what’s the point?” and shouted to the jury “I hope you all suffer a brain injury,” apparently a reference to his claim that he could not remember what happened because he had twice suffered head injuries in the weeks before the attack.

The judge ordered him to be removed from the court, apologised to the jury for the “disgraceful behaviour” and told them they were safe.

I can't find any reference to the sexual assault in the jury's verdict/s

The prosecution also alleged Ms Buckney was sexually assaulted by Whitelock. But Mr Rees added, "whether this was done by the defendant before, during or after his attack upon her is impossible, forensically, to say".

A man who murdered his neighbour in an attack with a kitchen knife, broken table leg and wooden shelving has been jailed for life - and will never be considered for parole.

This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly.

Gallery applause as Whitelock told he will never leave prison

The judge says he has no doubt that the seriousness of the murder was exceptional and that just punishment requires that Whitelock be kept in prison for the rest of his life. He tells the defendant the release provisions will not apply to him and he will never be considered for parole.

There is clapping from the public gallery
