For many years the murder was covered up, and even official publications of Stanford University acquiesced and used the death certificate designation of heart trouble as the cause of Jane Stanford's death in Honolulu almost 114 years ago. The widow of Leland Stanford, she had sought to remove university president David Starr Jordan from his position - he remains a key suspect; also of interest: Mrs. Stanford's personal secretary, Bertha Berners, who was present at both attempts on Mrs. Stanford's life - the other occurring a month earlier in San Francisco, also with strychnine.
