University to students: All Whites are Racist

  • #181
...But safeguarding minority rights is a never-ending struggle.

The population growth of white people is much slower than that of other races here in America. When the majority of the population is non white who is to say anyone will be safeguarding the minority rights then?

We have a safeguard called the Constitution. So far and as a rule, it hasn't been people of color who threaten it.

So far and as a rule, it's white people who wrote it and defend it. (And alter it's meaning acording to their whims, on occassion.) When white people aren't the majority, nor the ones in power - do you really feel the constitution is going to amount to anything? Just asking.

Just Curious - Why wouldn't it?

"A mandatory University of Delaware program requires residence hall students to acknowledge that "all whites are racist" and offers them "treatment" for any incorrect attitudes regarding class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality they might hold upon entering the school, according to a civil rights group."

...

"The organization cited excerpts from the university's Office of Residence Life Diversity Education Training documents, including the statement:

"A RACIST: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. 'The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the U.S. system, they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination….'""

LOL, this is ridiculous.
This doesn't say anything about "Black People" in particular. So, I am wondering why Black People are being singled out in this thread. This so-called program (which I don't agree with) focused on anyone who was not white or straight, right? How did it get to be about White vs. Black and straight vs. gay?

Because silly, whenever we talk about racism, it is always black vs. white. Unless we are talking about illegal immigrants, then we are talking about mexicans vs. whites. Or if we are talking about terrorists and or religion, then it is muslims vs. whites. Asians must never experience racism.

I think (HOPE) you realize I am being sarcastic! ;)

Straight vs. gay came up because of the questionaire's section on sexual identity.

Glitch, you surprise me. That question sounds fundamentally racist and not what I expect from you.

Yes, white people wrote the Constitution and in the process decreed that black people weren't fully human. I don't think we need to applaud that part. Yet over the years, the Constitution has been improved due to the efforts of people of many different color. I have no idea why you think it takes a white majority to preserve it.

BTW, I live in an area where Anglos are no longer a majority. The rule of law still prevails. Why wouldn't it?

If there are large numbers of people who already feel they are owed something, they're most likely not going to look at the people who they feel owe them something and give to them. Am I talking about everyone who happens to be black? Certainly not. But I am talking about sheer numbers. Many of who feel they are owed a debt that can't be repaid, and have said so.

Black people (in my experience) are a very tight knit group - rally around causes and get things done. This is most EXCELLENT of a trait, and one to be admired when fighting for their causes (be it a small town community center rezoning to abolition of slavery and equality in education, etc.) However, I am not going to assume that black people would ever put out a rally cry to make white people equal to black people when that time comes. I don't see it on a small scale, so where are all of the altruistic black people going to come from on a large scale?

It reminds me of the girls who think that by marrying the abusive boyfriend, everything will work out. Fantasy. If it didn't happen before you got married, it's not happening afterwards.

In response to me sounding fundamentally racist to you: I have fought to not be racist my whole life. There are a few out of the whole world, a FEW black people who I am keeping at the forefront of my mind - so that I know black people aren't to be disliked for their color. (They are all co workers - computer programmers, my boss, the handyman and the janitorial lady.) However, the majority of black people I come across in everyday life (the mall, traffic, parking lots, grocery store, gas stations) in NO WAY are helping me not be racist. Rude doesn't begin to describe it. Offensive on purpose. Confrontational. Perhaps it's just me, but I don't appreciate that kind of thing.

How am I supposed to feel those rude, offensive, confrontational people in even larger numbers are all of a sudden going to give me any rights as a white person? They already don't give me the "right of way" on the sidewalk, when it's clearly marked that the law states I should have it.

PS
I do apologise if my point of view is bothersome to you. It is what it is based on my experiences and I do understand your experiences are different than mine.

Of course I do!

Glitch, I was very careful to distinguish between your one argument, which sounds racist to me, and you and your beliefs as a whole. I wasn't extrapolating from a specific thought to your world view as a whole and didn't mean to suggest that anyone should.

Until I moved to my current home, I lived my entire life in cities with large black populations. I still live in a predominantly Latino area. Have I ever encountered a rude person of color? Of course. But I simply can't find the "racial patterns" you feel you have observed.

But I suspect you are confusing class issues with racial ones. As a rule, middle class people can afford the luxury of things like courtesy on the sidewalk. As a rule, lower class people can't or don't, being preoccupied with matters such as getting enough to eat. Or asserting themselves in a world that seems to devalue them. I'm no fonder of "street swagger" than you are, but I understand it as a compensation for relative powerlessness in other areas.

Of course, there are individual exceptions, but as a group rises in income, they tend to adopt values similar to other middle-class people. This has been demonstrated with African Americans and Latinos. Thanks to the Catholic Church, middle-class Latinos do tend to be more conservative on issues such as gay rights, but there's no reason to believe they don't or won't support generally accepted American values.

you see more and more groups, clubs, magazines,, etc.. exclusively just for them

there are magazines targeted towards jews, polish-americans, italian-americans, gays, men, women, cat lovers, and everything else you can imagine. why does it bother you that there are magazines for blacks?

there are countless 'black colleges/universities',,

there are historically black universities which were created during a time when blacks couldn't attend other universities. no one is stopping whites from attending these colleges now, and in fact many do.

a black TV channel,, etc etc etc... how is that fair and equal, i ask you......???

BET was created in response to the fact that, at the time, the faces on MTV and other "young peoples" networks were mostly white. to this day, the vast majority of characters on network television are white. is that fair and equal?

this is precisely the reason why i hate threads like this -- there is little discussion on the actual topic and more complaining about how unfairly whites have it.

yes, I have a nephew in law (not sure how to put it) going to Historically Black college right now.
I have NO problem with BET at all. It hurts no one, Im sure alot of Black people enjoy it. I used to like to read Ebony mag. while in waiting rooms.
People worry too much about unimportant things.
I dont have a problem with Miss Black America either. I think its a good idea. Hurts no one either. How many Black young women have won Miss america shows? Except for Vanessa Williams and she is half white.
