The US government is declaring that an imaginary missile shield - that is currently effective with a range of 70 km (45 miles) - may eventually become effective with a 3000 mile range (from missile launcher,) and the US must own Greenland today in case that extended range capability is ever realized.

It's a lot of nonsense based on let's imagine together.

"Speaking in Davos, Switzerland, where he made the case for a U.S. acquisition of Greenland, Trump said he needs the Danish territory for his proposed "golden dome," a missile defence system that could cover North America.

Trump said the dome will protect Canada due to geography and the country isn't grateful enough that such a system is in the works. Carney has been non-committal in the past about Canada participating in or paying for what Trump is floating.
...

"Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements," he said, but not to the prime minister directly, who left the summit before Trump delivered his remarks. The two did not meet on the sidelines of the summit."

"Iron Dome is the best known of Israel's missile shields. It is designed to intercept short-range rockets, as well as shells and mortars, at ranges of between 4km and 70km from the missile launcher. There are Iron Dome batteries across Israel. Each one has three or four launchers containing 20 interceptor missiles each."

Reporting from the room where Trump spoke today in Davos:

Trump was met with loud applause as he took the stage for what many billed as the most closely watched speech of this year’s Davos....

He also directed a number of comments at Carney. A CEO seated nearby told me, on condition of anonymity, that Carney took it in good humor, smiling and nodding along....

“Would you like me to talk about Greenland?” he asked, drawing a loud “yeah!” from the audience. Around me, some attendees shook their heads. One person seated behind me, who said they were Danish, muttered: “This is ridiculous.”

“I am seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States,” Trump said.

The room fell noticeably quieter. “This is scary,” one attendee in front of me said, exchanging uneasy glances with others....

The address was followed by a fireside chat with WEF President Børge Brende, but by then — after well over an hour — some of the audience had begun to drift out.

As I left, I asked a few attendees what they thought. One tech CEO summed it up succinctly: he wasn’t sure whether to laugh or feel nervous, a sentiment echoed by several others.

“Yes, we laughed,” one politician told me. “But it’s also frightening to think he might actually try to execute some of this.”

I understand an elite crowd would have impecable manners and have restrained reactions, but I expected more disdain than this. Maybe they will save those comments for private conversations. Or, it's all a rowdy joke to them (hope not).

We can see the cognitive decline right before our very eyes yet no one in Congress will step up and do anything about it.
For this particular speech, they have the excuse that his flight was disrupted and he likely got no sleep. They will excuse it away. In fact, it's probably old news by now, just a few hours after it happened.

The US government does not recognize the people of Greenland at all. They are looking at the last 500 years of history as justification to declare ownership, and do not recognize the rights of the Indigenous People lived on the Island for centuries beforehand.

Mark Carney certainly stood up to the US today at Davos, and he encouraged everyone in the room to stand up with him. He mentioned NATO Article 5 and solidarity in the defence of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland.

If only the people in the US would stand up to their government! Please tell the US government that the US was not a country 500 years ago, so there were no US boats in Greenland. Someone else can tell the US government that NATO was formed to protect the Arctic Region, and it doesn't make sense for one NATO country to declare that they can provide better security alone.

Mark's message is important: the world has changed, there's no reason to be nostalgia. Instead, see the world for what it is today, and build a better, safer, more prosperous future together.

~ in my humble opinion ~
I'm so glad we have Mark as primeminister.soooo glad we didn't end up with PP. I feel awful for Greenlanders being treated like this. Hopefully one day they will stand up to that man and end alot of this conflict before it's to late.

And Press Sec denies what we all heard and saw

And now people will talk about whether it is a piece of ice or not rather than the issues at hand.

To think that last night I felt empathy toward the press secretary, knowing the trip to Switzerland was particularly long due to the plane turning around and knowing she is pregnant. I recall being so exhausted when traveling during pregnancy. But, she's in full form and her usual self.

Already praising himself and his Davos speech.

“We had a good speech, we got great reviews. I can’t believe it, we got good reviews on that speech,” Trump said on Wednesday...“Usually they say ‘he’s a horrible dictator-type person,’ I’m a dictator,” Trump continued. “But sometimes you need a dictator! But they didn’t say that in this case.... It’s all based on common sense, it’s not conservative or liberal, or anything else.”

This kind of talk—which Trump has all but normalized—sheds further light on his aggressive, antagonistic approach to diplomacy, especially after spending the morning threatening Europe, Canada, Greenland, and, bizarrely, Iceland.

President Trump says he has the framework of a deal on Greenland and won’t be imposing the tariffs he threatened.

Trump: "Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

there's something about trump more non-americans should understand. as scary as he sounds sometimes, he is easily placated. all you have to do is give him "concessions" he already has. this works because he has a head full of uninformed narratives about "america getting screwed!" in various ways. this creates ample opportunities to "bend to his will" and let him declare victory and go away by just agreeing to do what you were already doing.

in this case, the "concession" was probably to allow the US to have military bases in greenland, which worked because he didn't know we already have them. or something like that. ... another way it could have ended is germany agreeing to buy american tanks. or macron agreeing to let american tourists visit paris. trump would have come back boasting about the bigly awesome new victory he won for us that no other american president was ever able to achieve, not obama, not lincoln, not even christopher columbus.

His own chief of staff, Susie Wiles said, '"Trump has an alcoholic's personality...He operates [with] a view that there’s nothing he can’t do. Nothing, zero, nothing,” she told the magazine.'

His former staff recently said, "He's now drunk on power". Susie Wiles says Trump has an ‘alcoholic’s personality’

Shouldn't we be focusing on Ukraine, where Russia is systematically trying to destroy the electrical grid and fuel supplies?

I sense that calling off the tariffs has more to do with this ... rather than Greenland. (imo)

Markets rebound as Trump calls off tariffs on European allies over Greenland

Stocks jumped on Wednesday, soon after the president announced that he would scrap tariffs on European allies after establishing the “framework of a future deal” on Greenland.

Strange remark from "anonymous source" in US news!

According to Canadian news, Carney left before Trump arrived.

"Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements," he said, but not to the prime minister directly, who left the summit before Trump delivered his remarks. The two did not meet on the sidelines of the summit."

Is there a WS thread for Ukraine? I seem to recall one, back when the invasion first happened.

I don't think so. If he was looking for a country that ends in "land", why not Finland, England, Russland? Instead, he's talking about the Island next to Greenland because that Island was perhaps discussed during that flight.
