US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

  • #481
If only the people in the US would stand up to their government! Please tell the US government that the US was not a country 500 years ago, so there were no US boats in Greenland. Someone else can tell the US government that NATO was formed to protect the Arctic Region, and it doesn't make sense for one NATO country to declare that they can provide better security alone.

~ in my humble opinion ~
Here’s the thing…I really appreciate your optimism here but there’s not really any “standing up” to this government that people here can effectively do, that we aren’t already doing. We don’t have midterms until November, 10 months from now. 1/3 of the country believes every single word that comes out of Trumps mouth and agrees with it all, even if deep down they know he’s wrong (they do not want to admit that they know he’s wrong, because they are truly in a cult) Republicans in Congress are bought and paid for by billionaires and corporations so they will literally never go against Trump. It’s really the craziest thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life, how he has dismantled every safe guard to democracy so quickly and with zero pushback. I can’t stress again how utterly bad it is in this country right now and there is truly very few things that the average citizen can do to help. I call my senators regularly to voice my opinion (but I live in a Blue state). There are protests every single day in every single state (even red states). This is all MOO and I’m sure it’s too political but trust me; we all know how bad this is. But we are on a runaway train with no real way to stop it. Again MOO.

snipped

I don't want to go off too much on a tangent, but there are many tribes within USA borders that have sovereignty. (Not saying that USA history with native nations provides great examples, however. )

jmo

They do.

IMHO - they fail to use it and they should learn. Building casinos is not a way out, if you think of it.

US history with the natives has been “not easy”, but every country has done the same with own natives! Rinse, repeat. But still some have better results than others.

So I always felt that our natives could use better elders, and demand more. They are different as tribes but they could view themselves as a group. But I never lived there and suspect that what I see is the result of “indigenous PTSD” that has never been dealt with.

The human part of the situation with the Greenlanders concerns me most.

For example: if a group with another native language is adopted, how is the language treated? It is not an Indo-European language, but it is alive and an official language of Greenland. Much has been done to preserve Kalaallisut.

Do we recognize it as a second official state language, as New Zealand treats Māori? Or what?

You take a tiny, but self-governing entity, because of its minerals and whatever. But you can’t pretend that the entity doesn’t exist.

No, seriously, think of this. They speak mother tongue and as I suspect, many speak Danish. If they need treatment they use own doctors or go to Denmark, right.

Now what will happen if they need medical help and need to go to “the continent”? How do they express themselves?

Greenland is NOT there for the ‘take’ing!

See your last sentence before your edit.

Leave it alone, just leave it the heck alone!

You are asking "me" not to take "it"? Heck, i am not a geopolitician: I look at the map and see no countries, borders or resources but the people living there.

The flight taking Donald Trump to Davos was forced to turn back to Joint Base Andrews late on Tuesday after the crew on board Air Force One identified a “minor electrical issue”.

The U.S. president and other passengers will now take two smaller planes as they head for the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, where Trump will hold critical talks over Greenland’s future with angered European leaders.

His plane landed at 11:07 p.m. after having taken off shortly after 9:40 p.m. ET....

The plane change is expected to delay his arrival in Switzerland.

Flight tracking data showed the plane turning around over the waters off Long Island, New York, and heading back toward Washington, D.C.

The US government does not recognize the people of Greenland at all. They are looking at the last 500 years of history as justification to declare ownership, and do not recognize the rights of the Indigenous People lived on the Island for centuries beforehand.

Mark Carney certainly stood up to the US today at Davos, and he encouraged everyone in the room to stand up with him. He mentioned NATO Article 5 and solidarity in the defence of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland.

Mark's message is important: the world has changed, there's no reason to be nostalgia. Instead, see the world for what it is today, and build a better, safer, more prosperous future together.

You're right. It's quite a speech. If only all our leaders were that clear sighted. Here's the link if people want to read it.

What an amazing speech, from an amazing leader.

Several allied leaders have used their speeches at the annual event in the Swiss Alps to push back on Trump's pressure campaign over Greenland, which has seen Trump and administration officials propose tariffs on NATO allies and even threaten the use of force to seize control of the massive Arctic territory.

He has now landed in Switzerland.

I am not sure how delayed he was. He is expected to address the gathering today.

US President Donald Trump wants Greenland so desperately that, unknowingly, he is calling into question the very foundation of the United States of America.

update, bbm. I am hoping to watch the speech live so I'm interested in knowing when it will be:

President Trump was supposed to deliver the keynote speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, at 2:30 p.m. local time (9:30 a.m. Eastern). But some staffers and attendees here in Davos are preparing for a potential delayed start, after Air Force One returned to Joint Base Andrews late Tuesday with Trump on board due to a “minor electrical issue.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier that Trump was running three hours late. Trump was also expected to hold multiple meetings with foreign leaders to discuss his demands to take over Greenland before ending the day with a reception with chief executives and business leaders.

"The text of the Constitution and the example of history suggest that for a more peaceful option, Trump would need to ratify a treaty with Denmark and Greenland to buy the world’s largest island.

Ratifying a treaty, according to the Constitution, requires 67 senators, which in today’s political environment means Trump would have to convince Republicans and some Democrats to back him. He would also have to squeeze money for the purchase out of Congress. Meanwhile, some senators from both parties have introduced legislation to protect NATO by blocking Trump from acquiring Greenland."

From the same link:

“The risk here is that we focus, of course, on Greenland, because we have to make sure that issue gets solved in an amicable way,” Mr. Rutte [Secretary General of NATO] said on a panel in Davos. “But the main issue is not Greenland. Now, the main issue is Ukraine. I’m also a little bit worried that we might drop the ball focusing so much on these other issues.”

this is a very typical approach for rutte, his main goal is to keep nato together. you might remember him calling trump daddy, sending (imho) slimy messages to trump. it might be true that ukraine is a main priority, but he also wants to not upset anyone and stay in trumps good graces, use flattery to get what he wants from trump, and i think that’s the real reason he’s not stating anything publicly about greenland.

whether it’s a good approach.. i don’t know. it feels a bit icky, i would rather see him make clear statements, but what do i know, hopefully it’s for the best?

I am certain that the US government will eliminate environmental law, as was done in Alaska under this government. The land will be destroyed, the people will be displaced. If they remain, they will be turned into workers so those wearing white hats can get rich. Health care will no longer be free.

It will be a disaster of monumental proportions. The US wants money, they don't care about the people or the environment.

Even if money is promised by the US government to the people of Greenland, it will not be given today. It will be a small percentage paid after the extraction of natural resource wealth, and it will never be fully paid.

Imagine that the US government promises $100,000 US to each person on Greenland. What can they buy with that? Two cars?

~ In My Humble Opinion ~
Gosh, how could it be that my president has offered $100,000.00 to each resident of Greenland?

The US government has made promises to the US people to give cash. I've lost count of the promises. I think one was 2000.00, one was $1776.00. The American people haven't seen these promised payments.

The president promised to put America first, so Americans would be up in arms to hear our president is offering to pay $100,000.00 to each person in Greenland!

MOO
