US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

NATO consists of 32 members, modern, well developed countries of Europe and Northern America. The US are but one of them. Right now the US, IMO spiralling right into totalitarian dictature and economical insanity, is not an anchor. It's, IMO, the balast that drags NATO down and disables it's functioning. Russia is a danger to multiple NATO members, yet NATO can't do much, being blocked in it's initiatives by the US. That is not being anchor, that's putting stick into wheel. IMO, of course.
Yes. They are modern and well developed. But we have the military might that anchors NATO. Or, at least, we USED to be that anchor.

I agree we are putting a stick into the wheel. But without our military backing, there isn’t a complete wheel. NATO is in grave danger of collapse.

If the remaining members keep calm and collaborating NATO can be rebuilt without the US and without losing that much power. On the other hand much of the US powers stems from the military bases all around the world. Losing all European ones would diminish it a lot.

But is the US government of today interested in aiding/protecting the Europen NATO member countries in case of an attack? Perhaps they see the "1984" scenario as more ideal.

Does not seem so, considering said government is all buddy-buddy with Putin, whose Russia is a threat to multiple European NATO members.

I was not thinking about a war, just a division of the world into three pieces, each continent under the rule of 'one strong man', a perfect 'buddy' solution.

How do you imagine such a division, against the will of people, achieved without war?

Also, there are more than three continents in the world.

War/occupation by each of the three of their areas, but not war between/against each other.

As for more than three continents, have you read "1984"? (Only the yellow area larger than here.)

It pains me, because the USA is my country.

But NATO countries are going to have to form an alliance without the US. Weaker than with the US? It's a moot point.

US has already dropped out as far as I'm concerned, or would be concerned if I were the other NATO countries.

The fact is, the other NATO countries will greatly reduce US power in the world if they make an alliance without the US. And if US wants that power back, let us have free elections, civil rights, a government that is not corrupt, and maybe they will let the US in, too.

US still seeking 'paths to ownership' over Greenland, says prime minister

(BBM below. Sounds extraordinarily familiar 🤔)

... Trump has since backed away from threats of force and said he had secured total US access to Greenland in a NATO deal, though details remain unclear.

"The view upon Greenland and the population has not changed: Greenland is to be tied to the US and governed from there," [Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik] Nielsen said in a speech to the island's parliament in Nuuk, speaking via a translator.

Mr Nielsen said the US continues seeking "paths to ownership and control over Greenland".

The island's government said last week it had launched a survey of the population's mental health situation at a time of extraordinary pressure.

"Some of our compatriots have severe sleep problems, children feel the worry and anxiety of adults, and we all live with constant uncertainty about what may happen tomorrow," Mr Nielsen said.

"We want to say it very clearly: This is completely unacceptable."

Diplomatic talks between the US, Denmark and Greenland began last week with senior officials meeting to "discuss how we can address American concerns about security in the Arctic while respecting the Kingdom's red lines," Denmark's foreign ministry said.

Mr Nielsen also praised Denmark as a close partner throughout the crisis. He has previously stated that if Greenlanders were forced to choose between the US and Denmark, they would choose Denmark.

The speech made no mention of independence for Greenland.

For Greenland's Inuit native population, the debate over ownership clashes with cultural values.

Under Greenlandic law, people can own houses but not the land beneath them, reflecting the Inuit concept of collective land stewardship.

It's amazing what this one individual has done to the world. Sucked the air right out. The worry, the anxiety, the kids' stress.

A year ago when he started calling Trudeau and then Carney “governor”, I started having sleep issues. In March and April when he started the tariffs against everyone, it was even worse. I’m a year or two from retirement and like so many others watched my investments tank. Once Carney won the election and started dealing with him I started feeling hopeful again and so much more since he started to relentlessly visit other countries in order to make trade deals. I completely emphasize with people in Greenland going through this and I hope it ends soon. None of us asked for this and none of us voted this guy in yet we are being harmed.

In the US, I didn’t vote for the disaster, millions of us did not. I’ll never be convinced he won fairly, the fake assassin nonsense and Elon Musk interference and money, nothing added up!
Terribly worrying as my retirement funds could be wiped out and his cuts to social security and Medicare will cause so much hardship
