Donald Trump has again proposed annexing Greenland, after Denmark's leader urged him to "stop the threats" over the island.

Speaking to reporters, the US president said "we need Greenland from the standpoint of national security".
'We need Greenland': Trump repeats threat to annex Danish territory

Will this be the next 'invasion' by the USA? Trump's regime has shown that they will ignore international law, based on their actions against Venezuela. Does this mean that Greenland is more at threat than previously believed?
They have rare minerals, which the Trump Admin aspires after. And, Trump has been bad-mouthing Denmark.

Danish PM says US attack on Greenland would be the end of NATO

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that any bid by the United States to take over Greenland will result in the end of the NATO military alliance, as reverberations from Washington’s military attack on Venezuela and the abduction of its leader are felt across the globe.

Frederiksen made the comments on Monday following US President Donald Trump’s latest calls for the Arctic island to come under direct control of Washington.

Stephen Miller said on Monday night that the annexation of Greenland was now established US policy.

“The United States should have Greenland as part of the United States,” he said.

“There’s no need to even think or talk about this in the context that you’re asking, of a military operation. Nobody’s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland.”

Just going to put this here, for those who are wondering, as I was.

The (known) ways to annex a country.

1. Tariffs could pressure Denmark to acquiesce to US demands
Trump may call upon the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which would provide broad authority to declare a national emergency to deal with unusual and extraordinary threats to, as the IEEPA outlines, “national security, foreign policy or economy of the United States” that originates “in whole or substantial part outside the United States.”

Rothwell says tariffs could be “a real prospect”.

2. Greenlanders could declare independence and choose Trump
Hypothetically, Greenland could say ‘we’re going to declare independence on the first of April’, and on the second of April, an independent Greenland commences discussions with the United States to become a state, or have some level of association with the United States.

or .... Denmark, with the Greenland government, says, ‘the United States is making these offers, let’s have a referendum or a plebiscite to gain support for that’.

or ---- The most likely option, were Greenland to enter an association with the US, is a free association status, under which the Greenlanders would retain their self-governance, but, as Rothwell says, “the United States would be responsible for defence, security and foreign affairs, and, no doubt, other concessions that the United States would be able to negotiate.”

3. Forcible annexing of Greenland
The most obvious military means is the United States annexes Greenland in the same way that Russia has served to annex parts of eastern Ukraine. The President issues one of his executive orders, suggesting that he’s going to annex Greenland, and then orders the US military to effectively take over Greenland.

The most likely situation is that ......

Trump “seeks to entice the Greenlanders to come over to the United States’ way of thinking, either through a unilateral declaration of independence, or gradually working towards independence in collaboration with Denmark, and then an independent Greenland saying ‘we’d now like to very much join up and have some sort of security, defence and economic relationship with the United States’.”

When JD Vance went to Greenland and gave his Orwellian speech, doors were slammed in his face.

"We hope that they choose to partner with the United States, because we're the only nation on Earth that will respect their sovereignty."

The phrase "by hook or by crook" comes to mind

I'm thinking Cuba before Greenland. Might be easier? IMO

They will choke on Venezuela first.

They will choke on Venezuela first.

I was wondering if that is what the "20 days" is about. See how they go with Venezuela, and if the world doesn't kick up too much of a fuss then go for Greenland.

"Let's talk about Greenland in 20 days," Mr Trump said on Sunday

"The White House said Tuesday officials are discussing a wide range of options for acquiring Greenland, including using the U.S. military to take it by force.

Senior administration officials are also discussing possibly acquiring Greenland from Denmark or forming a compact of free association, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Trump wants the issue settled before the end of his term."

And there are no sane Republicans in sight to stop this madness. IMO

The US has never successfully run another country, other than some short-term administration in Japan and Germany post-WWII, arguably. In the last several decades, their overseas meddling/invasions always end in debacle and ignominy, leaving the country/territory worse off than when they got there and most Americans regretting the failure and waste of it all. See Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Baghdad's Green Zone for some laughable examples of how they mismanaged the occupation of Iraq.

They should keep their mitts off Greenland because they're going to fail like they always do in the end and just start fighting among themselves about the foolhardy, doomed endeavour. Capture is the easy part. Running a country you don't understand is hard. Trump et al should focus their efforts on running the US successfully instead. They're showing no signs of succeeding yet.

(I could say the same thing about Venezuela but that's for another thread.)

It's just bonkers to me that our leader is discussing taking over another country (or autonomous territory) - that does not want to be taken over - as if it's just a walk in the park... would be nice if we could ensure all our citizens are fed and have healthcare before spending billions on these ends, but what do I know 😒

This is my thought too. I keep hearing about how Trump is “America first” and the republicans repeating this as the main reason why they voted for him. Is this what America First means to them? Taking over other countries and using their resources?

America First should mean universal healthcare, better cost of living and a livable minimum wage, gun safety and common sense gun regulations, guaranteed parental leave after having kids…I could go on and on. I just want ALL Americans to have the same rights and to be able to afford to live, raise a family, be healthy and retire. That’s literally all I want and to me, that is America First. I don’t know why that is considered controversial in this country right now.

This is absolutely disgusting. I'm horrified with my countries leadership right now.

The White House said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump is discussing options for acquiring Greenland, including potential use of the U.S. military, in a revival of his ambition to control the strategic island despite European objections.
